My brother's laptop (zv4200) has a heat problem with the hard drive. The hard drive gets to 57 degrees celcius. Is this really bad for the hard drive? I thought not even processors should get that hot.![]()

That's not all that unusual/alarming IMO.
Is that the temp. only for a while?...Is it only when the CPU is at max speed? -
ZV4200???I dont think there is a laptop model with that number. The HD temperature depends on when you checked the temps. If 57C is the average temp then it is probably on the high side, but if it is a peak after heavy use then there shouldnt be a problem.
Also Pentium4 reach 65 - 70C when pushed regularly... -
You should open up the notebook and see if there's any dust near the hard drive. Also, try to always have open space underneath the notebook when you're using it; I've found that using it on a bed, etc... will raise the temperatures significantly.

Sorry, ZE4200. I'm use to saying ZV6000
The drive reached 62 celcius before. -
How old is the drive...may be its getting ready to die! If the temperature is very uncomfortable then I suggest replacing the HD if the laptop is still under warranty ask HP, if it is out of warranty then may be getting a faster HD might be a good idea.
The drive manufacturer also has some disk diagnostics(check their website), run those and see if any there are any errors
Ask him to back up his stuff before the HD gives up...
