hey guys im new to the forum, i was wondering if the 3000+ XP-M version, that CPU Z says is a 754 AMD 64 clawhammer w/ Nforce 3 MB, can be changed somehow to unlock the 64 bit extensions? i heard HP just locked them with thier bios? and how/where is the hard drive located on this machine! thanks!

Nope, even if you have an older CPU that still has the 64-bit section, it's disabled in hardware and probably because it's defective. Current Semprons (which is what a Socket 754 XP-M really is, before they thought up the name) have their own cheap-to-manufacture die design.

You can swap in an Athlon 64, if you don't mind voiding your warranty. I recommend hunting down a Mobile-class Athlon 64 3400+ if you do that (try Newegg).

I agree with brian, your best option if you want 64bit capability is to replace the XP-M with a mobile class Athlon 64(62W), which you can find upto a rating of 3700+. Even better still would be the low power A64's which are very rare consume only max of 35W and can be found with ratings of upto 3000+

    ------------------------
    Compaq Presario R3340US AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 512MB, 80GB 5400rpm 15.4" Brightview WXGA.

    Acer Aspire 3003WLCi AMD Mobile Sempron 3000+, 512MB, 80gb 4200rpm 15.4" CrystalBrite WXGA

Just be careful, I've seen "Mobile" 3700+'s that are mislabeled DTR-class parts. Newegg was/is doing that.

The Low Voltage-class chips are great, 1.2V core, but yeah, nearly impossible to find. Buying a Mobile 3400+ and undervolting it to LV-class with CrystalCPUID is plausible though. I wish I could vouch for the Turions working, you can buy Turion ML CPUs from mwave.com. No one's tried that yet.
