I am guessing its a cracked hinge? The screen is wobbly when opened. Just looking for confirmation before i buy new hinges.

    Thanks

From looking at the pic, it seems to be just a superficial crack. That part looks like a clip on plastic. How bad is the wobbliness? If you are upto it, then you could try opening up and checking to see if any of the internals are cracked or not. HP has service manuals on their support site with instructions...might be worth a try if it just needs to be re seated.

My above post was for gustavo.

It wobbles pretty bad. probably a few inches of free play. When closing the laptop, once i get it down to about a 45 degree angle it will fall the rest of the way on its own. It also make a cracking noise when i open and close it. It has never been dropped or anything.

Have you tried pressing the plastic where it has come apart to try and close it. From what I can see, it seems to be a clip/lock mechanism for the plastic part which covers the actual hinge inside.

Take a look at the service manual...
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00364919.pdf

The actual hinge is located on the extreme edges where you see the screws, the middle plastic part looks like a cover for the cables which connect to the motherboard.

There is no movement at all when i try to push the plastic. Something underneath is bent i guess which is what caused the split there. Don't the hinge extend pretty far(not just cover the extreme edges)? From looking at the pic of the full hinges on ebay, they look pretty long.

Also with the screen opened, i can wiggle the corner thats split up and down on the screen. But the other side there is no movement up and down. Seems the movement is coming from that extreme corner you are talking about where the hinge is located thats covered with the plastic. Like i can hear it hitting the inside of the plastic as i move it up and down.

    Hi,

My zv6000 laptop has exactly the same problem. Were you able to close the gap? If yes, how?

    Thanks!

You need to remove the keyboard cover to see if the hinge on the display assembly is screwed down correctly to the base or you may have a cracked hinge.

Can you please tell me, if the hinge is broken or only bent or jammed? Do I have to buy that expensive HP hinges?
