I know there are many letters and numbers to identify notebooks but what exactly do they really mean? I know a 3000 series and a 6000 series is the physical size. Now when you get into the 3120 or 6153(just random numbers)what is the significance of the numbers. Now the DV and V distinguishes HP and Compaq but what does NC stand for? And then the serial numbers are another matter.

NC's are HP's Business Notebooks and they sell under the HP COMPAQ Brand Name

The 't' at the end of a model number is an Intel model, and the 'z' means AMD processor.

The V3000, dv6000 etc are the main model numbers. In the US they sell custom built versions direct to customers & also sell pre-built systems through retail stores. Outside the US, they only sell the latter. In order to distinguish between various different configurations, each pre-built model gets a specific model number like V3019, dv6234 etc to help the average differentiate between floor models in a store. Usually higher the model number better the specification and price. Ofcourse the pre-built model is still the same V3000/dv6000 series that HP lets people customize on their website, its just tailored to be sold in a retail environment.

nc clearly stands for not cool, i mean theyre business models, theyre not supposed to be cool

the t stands for too quick. the intel CPU is fast

the z stands for zero speed, the AMD CPU isnt fast

    the v stands for voluptuous

so the dv is deeply voluptuous

    anything else :p

as far as I know the Compaq v3000 is equiv to HP dv2000. I believe the numbering system is what's included as options. It's all a matter of decoding.

Just search for the model number on hp.com and for most systems they list the full specifications.

There are so many combinations that one tiny add-on will change the model designation. Then there's retail versions vs made-to-order models. Hope you can find the elusive decoder! hahahaha. I don't believe HP will give it to ya, trade secret?

Yep, decoder indeed. It gets even more confusing with the preconfigured V6000s, as HP has decided to designate some of them as an F555, C504, C552 etc.... (???) Very strange nomenclature.
