How is it compared to Thinkpad and Latitude? Is the casing built of plastic with a magnesium roll cage or a magnesium casing? Do they come with a standard HD anti-shock cage (or whatever they call them)?

Also I'm wondering why did HP keep the eraser head on just one series of notebook (nc6400)? While not using them on any other business notebooks.

Are HP's screens matte screens brighter then Lenovo's? Even on the older nc and nx series?

One more thing, how is the weight compared to Thinkpads?

The HP business notebooks are superior to the Thinkpad. They have a magnesium alloy frame, but is still encased in plastic. The top lid is magnesium alloy. All nc/nw/p/w models get the pointstick, only the nx/b models don't. The screens are brighter than the normal Thinkpad screens, but the Thinkpad's Flexview might offer better viewing angles. They all have HDD shock protection, split-resistant keyboards, ambient light sensors, etc, etc.

The only thing HP lacks is a great recognisable brand name like "Thinkpad" for its business notebook lines. People don't understand how different a HP Compaq is to a regular Pavillion and just go "eww, another el-cheapo Compaq" when they see the HP Compaq brand.

Ah thats cool, I was considering getting a 6510b but the competition is pretty tough in the 14 inch screen market with the T61 out. With all the pro Thinkpad people out got me wondering about hp's quality.

The D630 is also pretty cool from what I saw, with the high battery life and having the battery out front instead of sticking out the back. Not to mention the ability to have a 9 cell battery on a 14inch notebook. The weight seems like it goes up a lot though. The standard 3 year warranty on Latitudes is a big plus.

You guys think the 6 cell sticks out the back on the 6510b? It'll be pretty cool if hp was able to get it flush unlike Lenovo.

One more thing, how much of a discount does hp offer for college students? My email isn't up at the school I'm enrolled in so I can't sign in

The 6-cell on the 6515b/6910p/nc6400 does not stick out the back of the notebook unlike a Thinkpad. You still have the option to get an additional 8 or 12-cell battery which attaches to the bottom of the notebook.

I just wish the business line built-to-order models weren't so expensive. If you want an HP business machine with a 14.1 WXGA+ display you have to pay like $500 more than you do for a T61/Z61 or a D630. Bummer.

the HP APP discount is about 5%, at least I'm pretty sure that's what I got off my dv6000t back in September. I'm not sure if its the same discount with the business models though, can someone else confirm this?

    @Tailic

The equivalent of the Lenovo T61 in HP's business line is the 6910p and not the 6510b that you are considering.

The 6910p is the Santa Rosa successor of the nc6400 and both of them are more compact and lighter than the 6510b.

    Check the specs @HP 6510b 6910p and nc6400.

Ah thanks for clearing that up. 1349 pretty big chunk of change for a 14 inch business notebook. A similar built Thinkpad or Latitude would be cheaper but I think the Compaq would have the leg up weight compared to the Thinkpad.

Hmm, does anyone know when the 6910p will be configurable? They've been selling only pre-configured ones for a while now... not to mention the links don't work at all when adding to the cart.

I noticed today that the 6910p shows up as configurable. Doesn't give any shipping estimates though, and the configurator page doesn't seem like it's quite working right yet. No option for WXGA+.

HP Business laptops, Latitudes and Thinkpads are about the same. Each one has advantages and disadvantages, but overall I do not see a significant difference between the three.

Why did you bring up this outdated thread?

Obviously, there were a party of the HP fan boys here.

Other than that, chrixx is one of these guys who can't accept the fact that his HPs aren't any better than ThnikPads but just the opposite, now he will lose his sleep... :D

For every 1 HP fan boy, there's also another Thinkpad fan boy and a Latitude fan boy ........... I'd say it's fair and people definitely have better and differing experiences with each of them.
On the average, I'd agree with Homer_Jay_Thompson and apologise to the thread starter for the arguments Dreamer + I had earlier if it sounds too much like a thread hijack.
