i thought, i'd start a short repair report, since tomorrow my HP compaq 8510p business notebook is gonna be picked up for repair service.

i already experienced a very good repair service several years ago with an older compaq business notebook when it had the backlight problem (btw. after the screen had been replaced the same issue happened again, some 2 years later).

the problem i'm having now is quite strange - yesterday i opened the lid and powered the notebook on, and a ca. 8-10 pixel wide vertical white bar appeared on the right half of the screen. after rebooting and opening the notebook and replugging the connectors and checking others, the problem persisted. also made a desktop screenshot, although its obvious, to be 100% sure that the problem is the monitor itself, and, of course, on the screenshot there was no such white bar. so the pixels are backlit and working, but they get no signal on what color to produce, just white.

after some searching i found out that this mainly happens due to physical damage (to the inverter board, i suppose) - but my notebook is on my desk 24/7 and i haven't moved it from that place since my last trip, which was 3 weeks ago, neither there was an earthquake or other possible cause of a physical damage, and everything worked fine until yesterday.

well, since it's still under warranty, i arranged a repair service and it's gonna be picked up tomorrow. i hope there's no problems with this kind of damage conflicting with the warranty..

the only point to complain about - the picking up resp. delivery of the notebook: i know that the company doing the HP repair service (Vienna, Austria, Europe) is just around the corner from the place i work (my old notebook had its repair there, too, and i picked it up after repair from there), so i asked whether i could deliver the notebook there by myself, in order to make things faster (i really need my notebook, all the time.. the desktop replacement bacame my only pc being used). but no, the notebook has to be picked up by UPS tomorrow.. i told them to come to my work place, so they're gonna have UPS do a delivery of a notebook for them for a distance of some 300m (meters, not miles)

well, i'll report back when the repair is done (i hope without any warranty complications, since the damage seems to be a "user-made"-like one).

    a quick update:

yesterday the status was: on the way to repair site.

    today: is being repaired.

just gave hp a call to ask whether i could at least pick up my notebook myself, instead of having UPS ship it some 300 meters from the repair site to my working place.. well, impossible, the repair site is not here in vienna anymore, but in poland!

seems i have to wait quite some time to get it back, although the repair should be finished today.. just hope the UPS truck doesnt get robbed and my notebook stolen there in poland :p
