I have an older HP laptop....maybe 3 years old! My son went to restore the thing and within 10 minutes or so into the restoration process, the darn thing just dies...loses power. He is running off the power source cord, not the battery. It gave out a long time ago. Any ideas or suggestions before I go take it to a computer tech? Thanks.

Does the laptop feel like it is overheating? Sudden shutdowns are mostly a result of this. Check for signs such as very hot air blowing out of the vents or excessive heat build up during the reinstallation process.

After 3 years the CPU heatsink fins are probably clogged with dust. Almost guaranteed if the fan(s) run 24x7. That could cause overheating as miner suggested.
