Does anyone know what the battery life on the dm3z with L335 is AFTER underclocking and reapplying quality thermal paste? My dad wants a thin and lite. If the thing can get 6hrs as advertised, I'm sold. He will use it mostly as a ebook reader/web browser. He also likes to watch tv shows online.

Anyone else see the problem that both speakers work but the left over powers the right? at 75/100 balance they are close to the same.

Picking this up tomorrow if you guys think it is a good deal. I would have rather had the 1.3 GHz with 3M Cache rather than the 1.3 with 2M Cache.... However I am not sure what cache does lol... could someone explain this to me? Is there a noticeable difference between the 2M cache and 3M cache?

cache is like "ram" on the processor. it stores instructions in cache that way when it accesses them it is a lot faster rather than having to go fetch from ram. The more cache you have the more instructions the processor can hold at once and less fetching is done. Between 3mb and 2mb, i doubt you'll see a big difference in everyday tasks. Im not sure it will make a whole lot of a difference anywhere, perhaps in processor heavy apps.

Edit: Though if your worried about your processor, you should go for the AMD. This also has a 4500MHD, Good for battery but terrible for gaming. Just so you know:
Neo X2 + HD 3410 -> Best performance; worst battery life
Neo X2 + HD 3200 -> Increased battery life, degraded gaming and general graphics, very capable of playing games though.
Intel + 105 -> Increased battery life, decreased processor performance
Intel + 4500MHD -> Most battery life, worst performance.

Too many options lol. So in your opinion, which configuration would be best for me:

--College student so battery life is very important. I would like to at least be able to achieve 5 hrs on a battery while word processing (taking notes) and checking email.

--I don't play games. When not in class, I typically run iTunes, Google Chrome with 4-8 tabs, and Windows Calendar. I also watch Hulu in full screen and don't want to worry about frames skipping.

With these things in mind, would the Intel + 4500MHD be sufficient for my needs?

Also, what are examples of processor heavy apps?

I see you are using the AMD processor with the HD3200... what kind of battery life do you see?

is there away for the battery icon to show time and not just %? like my 8 year old dell?

    Hello all,

I am a new owner of a DM3-1030, I had it for a week but have couple of questions:
Does the light above your Num Lock key lights up when pressed? mine doesn't do that although I see a screen message that says its on/off (its not critical but still)

Does anyone notice the flex on the right side next to the touch pad? its solid everywhere, except for that part as if there is nothing underneath.

Do you feel the instant rise in temperature on the left of the touch pad?

The other thing is I noticed that I wasn't getting the 6 hour battery life (wishful thinking) but I got close to 4 hours (was online/typing on word, but nothing serious). for any 1030 owners out there, are you getting more/less?

I am thinking of returning it because of those reasons, even though overall I love it. I will do one last test on the weekend and see if it can handle Solidworks (that was my main reason for going for the ATI3200 hd) so will see what happens.

    Thanks.

Any intel based system would work for your puspose. I own two AMD 780G based laptops and one core 2 duo. There is just no comparision in battery life between the AMD and Intel.

On the DM3Z, even after underclocking and tweaking you will be close to 4 hours posted here.

On a DM3T, with any of the 10W cpus you will be at 8 to 9 hrs of battery life (as seen in many reviews).

    AMD Neo X2 L335 gets 858 passmarks
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+Neo+X2+Dual+Core+L335

Intel SU2300 gets 900 passmarks (cheapest of all intel CPUs)
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+U2300+@+1.20GHz

Where the AMD platform shines is in graphics. But not that great in raw processing power.

I was also undecided on which one to go with. Finally decided to go with a DM3t due to the reasons above. I have been with AMD for many years, but i think the gap between their mobile cpus and intel's is becoming way too big.

    1. Does anyone know if HP is planning on releasing a bigger cell battery for the DM3?
    2. Is there a way to make/dye the DM3's bezel and make it matte?

that doesn't seem right... can someone run 3dmark on they're intel cpu and post the results?

    Amd Neo X2 L335 : 1091

I get around 2 1/2 to 3 hours of battery life but i use my graphics card a lot playing halo and stuff.

    1. No idea

    2. I suppose you could cover it with some clear tape that is less reflective or some coating.

On a side note, the mirror track pad can be kept, but the look should be changed. They should try and go for a black mirrored finish, like a shiny slate of onyx (but something cheaper of course).

Hey I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was wondering if anyone could test theirs with Far Cry 2 or UT3. I am considering both the dm3z and dm3t.

from what i understand the HD3200 is ~ 6600. So the requirements on UT3 call for a 6200, should be good there. and Far cry 2 prolly isn't going to happen because of the processor requirements. If you get the 3410 you should have no problem handling UT3. But i haven't personally played it. I have played gears of war on all low settings 20-40 FPS on the 3200 if that helps

How did you guys manage to undervolt this laptop? I have the dm3z, and every time I activate the PST cores on the AMD cpu, the laptop either gives me a black screen or freeze all together. What am I doing wrong? I did the same thing on my previous studio xps 13 with Intel chip with no problem at all. Also, rightmark cpu's options for AMD is drastically different from Intel's.

I have not tried undervolting it, but someone earlier in the thread has

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5554250&postcount=1178

He seems to have had some positive results, and reports a friend doing better. Are you using the same utility? If so message that guy, he seems to know what he is doing, you may just have a bad chip for undervolting.

Something must be wrong with my laptop. I didn't even change anything. The only thing I did was activating the cores. End result? black screen or freeze. Anyways, thank you for your help ^_^

edit: has anyone found a ffdshow config to play 1080p x264 mkv files smoothly? My gpu is the default HD3200.

Isn't ffdshow a software codec pack meant for software decoding? I could be completely off.

What media player are you using?

unless it is windows media player 12 in windows 7 or something like

    http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/DXVASupport.html

vlc player, if that is what you are using, cannot playback 1080p clips smoothly as it only uses software decoding, and the neo is not fast enough based on my experience. You need to offload some of the load onto the gpu, and only certain players do that.

But maybe there is something specific about mkv files, though I thought they were just a container for h.264?

Try it with windows media player 12 or windows media player HC as they support hardware decoding.

And if you can, link a 1080p clip encoded as an mkv file and I will let you know if I can play it back.

There is no 3410. The dm3z comes with the radeon hd 3200 igp or the radeon hd 4330 discrete card.

what are u doing ? With the dm3z with light word work I can easily get over 5 hours. Surfing the web is over 4 hours

You also have to udnerstand the hd 3200 will help alot more with accelerating video than the intel chip so its a trade off . You will also get better gaming with the hd 3200 over the intel. Of course i wouldn't want to play games on either. But its good to remember on long trips .if your using it just for word and what not get a cheap ssd an watch battery life go up another hour or so

Hey i was wondering in performance is there a big difference in the sp9300 and the su7300 both with the 105m Graphic card While playing games. I know theres a 1-3 hour difference in battery between the two because of the watts used. But im thinking of playing games like l4d 2 and cod modern warfare 2 but im not sure if the su7300 can handle it. Id like to save some sort of money if its possible and have extra Battery life but if not thats fine.

my SU7300 w/ 105m gets min of 35 fps in TP:2 with native res and AA and AF on and high settings.

This weekend I will run 3dmark06 to and I think i have a SP9300 3dmark06 score over on my hardforum.com thread.

Does anyone have a 3 display setup?
I want to do HDMI - VGA - Mobile Display.

I have a 19" VGA and a 25" HDMI/DVI/VGA and I can't seem to extend the desktop to both monitors. Does the 4330 support this?

    Any help would be appreciated!

I know that this has been posted here, but the search function seems to be broken, so I can't find any information.

Does anyone else notice that the speaker placement seems to be a bit off? The left speaker is fine, but the right speaker seems to be close to the middle. It's a little odd and distracting.

Kinda driving me nuts. Just wondering if this is common.

when i isolate the 2 speakers on my dm3t the seem to be offset about 2" from each edge of the touchpad and equally offset.

Without taking it part it will be difficult to identify the exact location of the speaker.....

they seem to be fairly balanced and I do not hear noise comming directly from under the touchpad

Sort of. Seemed to be some sort of conflict with the wireless. Everything worked great after I did the factory restore until I connected to my wireless network. Then the problem started up again. (Did the factory restore twice to verify. Same thing both times. Worked fine until I connected to my wireless network.)

However, I downloaded and installed the clean version of W7 found on this forum and everything has been working just fine today. No issues yet after about 6 hours of heavy use. *crosses fingers.*

Glad I'm not the only one then. Though it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to set it up this way. And I'm surprised it was never mentioned in reviews.

This and the EXTREMELY faint vertical lines on the LCD are the only thing that bother me about the dm3z. (I've seen this on other notebooks too.) Other than that I love it. Perfect size, weight, aesthetics, and performance for what I need. Not to mention the fact that it was just about $50 more than a top-of-the-line netbook.

If you asked me this morning if I knew what laptop I was after, I couldn't tell you, but things just happened and I fell upon the lovely dm3. Joined the club, and I'm loving it :)

I'll leave my real impressions as the weeks pass. Coming from a Sager NP5797, this is on the other end of the laptop spectrum, haha. But it does almost everything right. The fit and finish is excellent, the keyboard is excellent, the LED screen is brilliant, the Neo X2 is doing its job, even the webcam is exceptional. HDMI, 4 USB ports, I could go on....

These are obviously inaccurate. Many of us with AMD L335 have posted Passmark scores of around 970, i have heard of scores even higher.

We have yet to see any SU4100 or SU7300 scores on the Dm3. Keep in mind that passmark though it rates cpu, that is affected by ram and chipset and OS etc. The score on the dual core AMD neos is an average which is probably being dragged down by its scores from the Dv2 which had an inferior chipset and an inferior OS (vista).

Until we see a passmark posted of an intel in the Dm3 it is not clear that the intels are more powerful. Although we shouldn't base too much on the WEI, it does test the processors for calculations etc and it rates the AMD's (l335, l625) higher than the Intels (su4100,su7300) in the Dm3.

With my L335 I got ~870, though I still have some of hps bloatware running in the background. I suspect that is the difference, clean installs vs vendor windows 7 installs.

That is too low. Make sure you are in High Performance mode, it is silly to benchmark a processor in any other mode as it isn't running at full strength. My score was closer to 970 (i can't remember it exactly now...i poseted it earlier in the forum) and i haven't changed anything from how it came from Office Depot.

Thanks alot, many of us appreciate this. Have you done anything to your computer as far as bloatware, OS etc? That will help us get a clearer picture. Thanks.

That is higher than i''ve ever gotten on my L335 (though a guy with an L335 in the Dv2 in another forum said he got 1010, which is closer).

Have we seen CPU passmark scores for the L625?

It is amazing how an INTEL SU7300 1.3ghz 10watt TDP, can beat an AMD T335 1.6ghz 18watt TDP , it just shows how superior INTEL is over AMD.

It might help if the L335 ran the memory at 800mhz and not at 660mhz :(

948 on "hp recommended" mode power option. So that was an increase.

It will turn around, at the beginning of 2011 with amd fusion cpu/gpu solutions.

2010 is going to be a rough year for amd I think. But the lower cost options with decent gpu like this combo is a winner. And most people seem to be buying the amd variant so far due to price.
