Well the amd verison with the 4330 should allow you to switch dynamicly between the gpus.

I don't know... a part of me thinks that the SP9300/105m combo will get the same if not better battery life than the AMD solution. Maybe I just have too much stock in Intel... guess time will tell.

4-5 hours shouldn't be a problem for the SP9300... heat on the other hand, is the question.

The geforce g 102m has a TDP of 12 watts

The 4330 uses 7 watts power consumption.

The 3200 should use less than both. The amd cpu will use more power though. But the geforce g 102m may bring the intel verison down in battery life.

I would not scroll any other way, it's far easier and more natural, especially for me because I'm a MacBook user, so I love it. The pinch/spread works very well too, although it looks like many programs do not yet support it.

Like I said earlier, a bigger touchpad would have made it easier to use, but it definitely works.

To answer your question about 25 watt TDP: TDP stands for Thermal Design Power. From Wikipedia: "...represents the maximum amount of power the cooling system in a computer is required to dissipate". Which basically means the engineers who design a notebook and cooling system for this processor must design it so that it can dissipate 25 watts of heat. That does NOT mean that the processor will always output 25 watts - it just means that under full load for extended periods of time it can.

One thing you are neglecting to mention is that the published TDP of the AMD 'G'PUs do not specify if it includes the PCB & Ram, which would be another 5 watts, thus making it 12 and right in line with the G105M, which seems more likely especially when you consider power draw of their desktop equivilents.

It seems far more likely that due to the fact that AMD does not come out and say that the TDP is for the whole GPU package, that they are being deceptive and published the TDP of the GPU itself only, not the circuitry and video ram that needs to go on it. nVidia on the other hand doesn't hide it, they explicitly state that it includes the whole board.

Question for all you new DM3 owners - i'm really considering grabbing a DM3T. I do not game but would like as best battery life i can get. I'd like to be able to play HD clips from the net. Will the integrated Nvidia be the way to go? I sold my Dell M1210 last week.. Also, i had a 1.8 dual core cpu on my XPS, will these ULV's be a little better than the 3 year old 1.8 chip ? I mainly surf the web, do email but i do like to use my digicam (point-shoot Canon) and D/L, manipulate images.. nothing intense. Just wondering if a ULV core2duo w/ integrated graphics would give me at least the cpu power i had with much better battery life. Never had and AMD chip in anything before either. TIA.

The Intel 4500MHD is more than capable of playing HD content. A review of the DM3 with the the base Intel chip and the 4500MHD explicitly states that it streamed 1080P content to a LCD without any stuttering or anything of the like.

If you want the most battery life, opt for the Intel/4500MHD combo. They will be able to handle all of your tasks just fine.

I don't know what sort of performance the 1.8 chip has... but I would imagine the SU7300 would at least be able to keep up with it if not best it.

    I have a question guys:
can the athlon neo x2 cpu play 480p hulu videos full screen with no dropped frames?
i currently have a 1.66ghz core duo that isn't completely smooth with full screen 480p hulu video playback, i estimate the neo l625 should be a bit faster, just wondering if it is fast enough.

Do note that online streaming services like Hulu are CPU dependent... there is no GPU acceleration. I'm not sure if the SU7300 can handle Hulu HD in full-screen, I would think so but you might want to hear back from people to make sure.

Yeah, i was hopeing to hear from a few people on things like that. Good note. To tell you the truth, i've never even tried to output 1080p from a computer. I have two dedicated home theaters that handle that. Thing is, i need a laptop and just don't want to sacrifice cpu power but also don't really need a dedicated card like my XPS M1210 had. That Go7400 fried itself on my motherboard twice. Thank God for in home warranties. Dell ended up replacing my M/board 3 times!

Ya, I know what you mean. My DV2000 and DV2500 both died due to faulty GPUs so I'm pretty freaked out about heat and Nvidia GPUs at this point.

Personally, I think the SU7300/4500MHD should be able to run just about everything all the while getting 9+ of battery life and running pretty cool. I'm waiting to hear about the SP9300/105M combo though. The SP9300/4500MHD with a 4-cell battery in the 5310m got 5.5 hours of battery life, so with a 6-cell that's about 8 hours of battery life. Throw in the 105m and heck, call it 5-6 hours. Maybe the 5310m has some optimizations or something? I doubt it, and even if it did, doubt it would have some magic to jump battery life up a few hours. My real question though is the heat output of the SP9300/4500MHD. At this point I am almost certain we should be able to get at least 4 solid hours out of it, if not 5... minimum. Heat is the wild card though.

But anyway, the SU7300 will be able to handle everything this side of HD web-streaming content just fine... and maybe even that. G'luk. :)

Ah man. Can you imagine throwing in an SSD into the DM3? The SU7300/4500MHD will be the coolest running longest lasting mother out there. Or in the SP9300/105M, you could launch your very own invasion from your backyard..lol.

So far about the 1080p playback oh HD3200.

    Catalyst 9.10
Using (DXVA hardware acceleration using UVD in this case):
    H264 L4.1 spec or before = ok (MPC-HC codec)
H264 L5 spec or above = no go (MPC-HC or Microsoft dtv-dvd codec)
VC1 = Gives green screen corruption (MPC-HC and Microsoft DTV-DVD codec)
MPEG2 = I dont have any content to test.

Using software 1080p decode (MPC-HC codec) it will make both processors to 100%.

This seems to follow in line with some of the comments in that previous link I posted.

There is still other options like CoreAVC codec (good software codec) and Cyberlink PowerDVD codec (has support for UVD) but I am having trouble with Win7 decoders stack. Microsoft keeps taking over lol.

    http://forums.amd.com/game/messagev...=106911&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear
This thread is someone on the amd forums trying to make L5 and above spec work on 3450 series (UVD1).

The original link I posted said even 4000 series (UVD2) you need to apply some hacks or use special codecs to make it work. I have a 4870 on my desktop and I can sort of confirm this. I have actually the same issues getting the UVD2 to work playing back the exact same video files. I just dont notice since I have a powerful cpu and just use software codecs.

CoreAVC is one of the fastest software codecs I have come across. (Latest version supports Nvidia CUDA acceleration) There is a trial version on their website to try.

Cyberlink works really closely with ATI so I would not be surprised if the cyberlink decoder gives me better results.

Someone here said that their touchpad stopped working after sleep. I just had a similar issue. I left the machine sleeping for a long time and when it woke, the touchpad sensitivity was horrible. I needed to put my thumb sideways and press down hard to get it to move. The tap was still working fine though. I'm guessing after a long sleep when the device wakes some settings get messed up on the wake sequence. I guess I should send hp an email about it.

BTW, I do not really think it is a bad laptop at all. Do not let these comments scare you. Most likely you will never run into these issues. I still like the design of the laptop and plan on keeping it.

Hopefully these issues I mention will be resolved with driver updates/tweaking in the near future.

Can someone confirm if DM3 has IR Receiver?

The guys at laptopmag.com did a review on dm3t, 1.3ghz C2D Su7300/Intel 4500HD. They did output to 1080p on a 32" screen...According to them it was flawless... I would take those results with a pinch of salt since it seems to have been a quick trial rather than a full blown test. (I like the extra insurance of AMD's HD3200- 15 to 20% better perf) see below:

    Graphics

Given that this configuration of the dm3t has Intel’s integrated graphics (4500MHD), we didn’t expect blistering performance. The system’s 3DMark06 score was predictably low at 703, or about half the thin-and-light category average. You can also forget about playing demanding games like Far Cry; the dm3t mustered only 4 frames per second at 1024 x 768.

On the other hand, doing a flyover to our Manhattan office in Google Earth was pretty smooth, and it took a respectable 15 seconds for most the details to fill in on the satellite view. We also tested this laptop’s graphics and video muscle by outputting a full 1080p movie trailer (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) to a 32-inch Samsung TV using the dm3t’s HDMI port. Playback was highly detailed, and we didn’t notice any hiccups during fast action sequences.

why do some places like best buy says its 1.21 inches thin while others say its under an inch thin. which one is it?

also do u guys know for sure if i choose ati raedon 4330, it can switch to 3200 to save battery? hp sales rep keep telling me it has not switchable graphics while others tell me it does. i just want to make sure before i buy.

It does have switchable graphics. HP Sales associates most likely have no clue regarding something as technical as that.

I keep meaning to ask but forgetting. Does anyone know of any sites that have a direct comparison between the AMD L625 and the Intel SU7300? Or atleast some figures regarding power between the two. I've heard things from both sides. I just want to know which one is the truly more powerful processor of the two.

What is your take on the dm3? Won't need it to play games but 1080p/bluray movies has to be rendered nice. What's would be ur ideal/optimal config knowing each processors and cards limitation ?

Stay away from Intel graphics and you should be fine. Both nVidia and ATi cards can handle 1080p without much problem. Also, keep in mind that Flash 10.1 will add hardware acceleration, which should be a very nice bonus while doing web surfing. Intel integrated graphics will see no benefit from that.

I ended up choosing the Intel SU7300 with the Nvidia because of battery life and power, but now I wonder about the AMD L625 and the ATI 4330. I wonder if in the end, the AMD will be the more powerful setup of the two, with the difference in battery life minimal between the setups.

Well, based on reported specs: ATI > nVidia in terms of performance. And supposedly ATI Radeon HD 3200 > nVidia Geforce 105M in terms of battery life. Though Intel > AMD for battery life and performance, AMD >> Intel in terms of affordability.

    Again:

    CPU performance: Intel > AMD
CPU battery life: Intel > AMD
    GPU performance: ATI 4330 (switchable) > nVidia G105M >>>>> Intel 4500MHD
GPU battery life: Intel 4500 MHD >>>> ATI 3200 (switchable) > nVidia G105M
Cost: AMD >> Intel ($100 more starting)

Big question is overall battery life: AMD ? Intel. It's a given that the Intel with Intel graphics lasts a long time, but graphics are pretty horrible. No one has the G105M so we have no idea how long it lasts. Once we clear that all up, then hopefully the decision will easier.

Well how big of a difference in CPU performance will we see between the Intel SU7300 and the AMD? I kind of figured the Intel would be more powerful but that doesn't mean anything if it's only say a minimal increase.

I don't need great graphics ability. Just want to watch blu-rays, hulu, youtube, that type of stuff. I don't play games, so it wasn't a big deal. I only went with the 105 obviously because I knew the intel integrated was garbage.

For me the ideal would be 5 hours (so a cross-country flight, I do those quite a bit) and then the ability to watch what I stated above, and that's it. Also I heard Win 7 performance would be better with the AMD, which I have no clue why that would be. Nobody has stated any reasoning as to why it'd be better than Intel's offering.

The affordability issue was the one I never looked at. it was only like a $50 difference for myself if I got the dm3t over the dm3z. So to me $50 wasn't a big deal.

Also do we know about battery life comparing the 4330 to the 105M. Obviously we have no real-world numbers, but do we even have any ideas as to which would be better regarding battery life?

Please people, remember the 4500MHD can handle HD perfectly.

Videos in browsers such as Hulu and Youtube are reliant on the CPU, not the GPU.

If you're not worried about gaming, go for the 4500MHD as it will handle everything other than games just fine.

    Don't take my word for it----------> DM3 SU7300/4500MHD

"Anecdotally, the dm3t was relatively snappy when switching between multiple open windows, and a high-res version of a Heroes episode played on Hulu had plenty of detail. "

" We also tested this laptop’s graphics and video muscle by outputting a full 1080p movie trailer (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) to a 32-inch Samsung TV using the dm3t’s HDMI port. Playback was highly detailed, and we didn’t notice any hiccups during fast action sequences. "

I have a 7200 RPM in my Dell Studio 14z and I haven't noticed an increase in heat.

The intel graphics would also experience an increase in performance when they enable the GPU for Flash video. Believe it or not, the Intel 4500 HD is fully capable of dealing with 1080P video and playing it flawlessly... please don't make us say it again!! lol :D

oddly the l625 and l335 are both listed twice, but both pretty close to the su7300 ...

question -- are the su7300 or l625 good enough for nulldc or would i really need to go to the sp9300? i assume all would be adequate for counter-strike: source ... the hp mini 311 was supposed to get 30 fps on cs:s but when i tried it and added any more than 5 bots it was more like 10 fps ...

Whether or not that "something" is done on the software or hardware level is dependent on the software itself. For instance, no matter what hardware you have, Flash isn't going to be hardware accelerated...

??? Not sure how you can come to that conclusion. Besides the 4500MHD has 10 unified shaders and supports DX10. When GPU flash acceleration is released, the 4500MHD will also benefit. If you are *not* going to game, the Intel GMA 4500 is perfectly suitable for anyone.

If it doesn't include those figures. If it does and no one knows then it doesn't and it wont be 12 watts.

Remember the amd 4330 is 55nm while the g 105m is 65nm . Similar chips transistor wise will lead to lower power consumption and cooler running operation on the smaller micron process. Lets also not forget that the g105 is just a renamed g 80 varrient. It is not as the name would lead you to imply the newest geforce cores used in the g200 series gpus in the desktop.

I updated the WEI in the first post to 3.1, which is what I got tonight with the dm3-1035dx model.

No Win7 disks included, but also virtually no bloatware. Microsoft Works and Norton are the only two marginal apps pre-installed. I have yet to uninstall Works but Norton proved to be a difficult program to remove because the Uninstaller ran into "another installer" is working message.

I had to stop Norton in the Task Manager to enable its removal. Clearly not a very customer-centric approach, Symantec.

How does the WEI on the processor drop so dramatically? Everyone else that has the L335 posted they got 4.2 for the proc score. How could it drop from 4.2 to 3.1? The OD and the BB models run the same processor, even if slight variation occurs, no way should the score dip by 1.1...

There was a fair amount of bloatware IMO. I consider most of the HP factory installed garbage to be bloatware, not just the trial software.

That's the overall WEI score. If there's a separate processor score, I did not use it.

Oh got it. The way it was posted on the front page, I thought that was the proc score, not the overall base score.

Yes, but the average consumer needs that, so that's by definition not bloatware. AOL, superfluous toolbars, Norton and MS Works are typically part of sponsorship deals, so I consider that bloatware. :)

In case anyone's still looking for a good deal, I was in my local walmart and to my surprise, they actually had the dm3z. Thought the price was $498, but maybe it was $598..

Best Buy and Staples in my area don't carry it, and I don't think there's a Office Depot out here.. ha

I left this on for like 4 hours, and this is the readings that came out:

i believe both neo cpu's should outperform the su7300.
also, i think the intel platform uses dual channel ddr3 while the amd uses single channel ddr2. can anyone check up on this? the amd has hypertransport, so it should get surprisingly good memory bandwidth though considering the circumstances.
the use of the 105m in the intel platform is also perplexing when there are sony laptops out now with the gt210m. That or the 4330 would have made alot more sense. But then it would be too competitive with the envy 13 i suppose

If you want to gaurentee 100% compatiblity and play everything get a SP9300+G105M

its a strong enough cpu and gpu combo to take care of most media i would think.

Intel + 4330 is available on the 13" Envy. I don't think HP wants to cut into that market.

If that is correct, I will eventually re-order and go with the AMD. I went with Intel because of the performance and the battery life. In terms of order, I prefer proc performance first, then battery life, then graphics last. But obviously if I got the AMD setup, I would get the 4330 for the switchable graphics just to have it.

I was told that the Intel SU7300 would outperform the Neo L625. It seems like I keep hearing both sides. Nobody has a definitive answer on this. I would sacrifice some battery life for the better processor, if that was AMD that is.

I recently purchased the dm3-1030us myself and am pretty happy with it so far, only complaint is some warmth I'm getting on the left palm rest, the rest of it I'm impressed with (especially the price tag). Just saw this review that got posted and worth adding to the OP's list of reviews:

We really just need someone with an AMD chip and compare it against the numbers for the SU7300 listed here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

Then again, I think all of the pre-configured models come with the L335, not the L625. I have no idea how 512KB more cache will affect performance synthetic benchmarks like SuperPi.

Yeah, I know it sucks to wait, atleast it is for me. I ordered the Intel, but only because I am accustom to it. if the figures show the L625 is a more powerful proc, then I'd definitely order an AMD. And yes, all the pre-configured models so far contain the L335 and not the L625. I've read some say the intel is more powerful, then others saying the Neo is more powerful. Even though we don't have the DM3's, others have laptops with the Neos already. We SHOULD have numbers to compare, I have no clue why we do not.

Also with that site, the problem I've seen so far is it has two sets of listings for both Neo processors. One listing shows them as MORE powerful than the Intel. Then there is a second listing with them BELOW the Intel. I have no clue why that is, or how it's not been fixed as of yet.
