Hibernate shouldn't bleed at all. It is a completely off state.
-
let me clarify: it was totally shut down and bled the amounts i reported. i didn't close the lid or anything, i manually shut down the system. I turned it off. if it persists to bleed about 15% per day, i don't think it's acceptable. that's about 6 days for the battery to go from 94% to 0%
if the battery bleeds this much while completely turned off, i'm thinking it's got nothing to do with the machine itself.. just the battery. i think tonight i'm going to take the battery out just to make sure. -
I have the same problem and I don't know what to do. I'm convinced it has affected my battery's capacity (it's now at about 2 and a half hours when it used to be nearly 4).
I think two people earlier in this thread have had the problem. One was fobbed off that it was natural to happen and the other was sent a replacement battery. I don't know if that sorted it or not. -
if you are past your return period, i'd say you should just contact HP for a replacement. 4 hours with low settings is not acceptable either, since i know for a fact that it should/can last 6-7 hours (it did with the 1044-nr i used).
i kinda want to return the laptop if it's still possible (i received this on wednesday, so i'm within the return period.. but i think J&R won't let me return it, since i already booted the laptop). i guess my 2nd resort is to contact HP for a battery replacement, but I have a feeling it's going to end up being a nightmare. -
Hmm... apparently according to the HP Battery Treatment Guide, they do recommend to:
1) Remove the battery if not gong to be used for 2-weeks w/ no AC
2) Warn affects of storing in "higher" temps
Are you guys from Florida by any chance?
Also, I am not sure how you are measuring that 94%, can you describe what you do EXACTLY, so that we can reproduce the results?
I think it could be easily explained by mis-calibration due to temp inside the lap after you turn it on, maybe it's still cold and not "normal" operating temps for which the battery was calibrated. -
I have a DM3z and it can eat up as much as 6% battery to come out of hibernation... a bit ridiculous if you ask me...
-
i'm in california. maybe compared to new york and new england it is warm, but it's not generally warm here. night time hits maybe 50 degrees, and during the day it can hit somewhere around the low 70's... so i guess it's cool weather.
anyways, i don't really care for what HP suggests. the protocol is that you should be able to leave your laptop unplugged for over a week without having to worry that the battery will completely drain.
as for the 94% thing... it's pretty simple. i charge the laptop until it's full, take out the a/c adapter, and turn on the laptop. maybe 5 minutes later it jumps from 100% to 94%. -
I can't confirm your findings. I charged to 100%, then I shut down the machine (complete soft shutdown), I waited 20 minutes, I started the machine, the ticker still reading 100% as I am typing this.
-
Are you running BatteryBar?
If you do, that may very well be the problem. -
Hey guys, I am back with the HP Crew
I recently went with an Asus because of all the HP problems, but the Asus laptops had even more problems. I've gone through 3 and well they all had some build issue.
Tonight I ordered a DM3t. I had one before but returned it because of the lack of a built in DVD Drive. I realized I didn't need one that badly. I got the SP9300 and the SSD. It was down to 500GB with 6GB Ram, 500GB with 8GB of Ram, or get the 4GB Ram with the SSD. I went with the SSD combination and hopefully won't regret it. I just hope 160 GB is enough room for me
I have a portable hard drive that holds 640GB, so that tells you all I need as much space as I can get! But I really couldn't pass up the SSD and its SPEED.
-
I have the same, SP9300 and SSD. I think it's the fastest laptop I've owned. Super responsive, crazy fast bootup/downs. Too bad HP stuck 100Mbit ethernet in this, I was limited to that 12MB/s when backing up my machine to my networked raided desktop. Yes, the touchpad still bothers me a little bit. The battery issue a bit too (more by the fact that HP lied basically). Other than these issues it's a sick machine.
-
So overnight I put the machine to hibernate, upon wakeup I did notice a drop of 3%. Tonight, I will try shutting the computer down overnight just to be sure, but as of now, it appears that: hibernate!=shutdown.
I think if we have enough of us to try this, we might have enough datapoints to have a statistically significant finding here that we can take to HP. I do agree that hibernate should not consume 3%/night. Somehow, I smell that a BIOS/firmware upgrades are coming to address this. -
Unfortunately, I think on the AMD model 4 hours probably is meant to be acceptable. What do you think it should be, 6-7 hours? It was never like that even when I got it.
Mine does that.
No, I've just done a fresh install of Windows 7. -
Does the bleedage occur immediately after start up?
I shut down at %100, and 13 hours later after booting it up it still showed 100%. Now after 20 mins I have 94%. -
I am not sure about others, but I checked the battery status immediately after boot up, pretty much as soon as I got focus on the desktop.
It seems that the shutdown is not a problem. Hibernate seems to have some issues. Sure, there are a few more writes to the disk to save the current settings/windows/docs, but I have trouble seeing how that takes up 3% of a brand new calibrated battery.
Who wants to volunteer to put their machine into hibernate for a couple days, to make sure it's not just a one time penalty of booting down and up? -
Mine happened like yours, 100% after start up, 94% soon after.
-
Yeah, I had some battery bleedage when the machine was in hibernate, but it was ok when shut down.
And this thread on sony vaio z battery drain thread might be of interest. A lot of people there are reporting similar "symptoms". -
well, i left the laptop at 38% last night, when i got home from work i noticed it was down to 35%.. this is with the computer completely shut down. no hibernate or anything like that. for what it's worth, i updated the bios yesterday, so that may have had a hand. 3% in about 17 hours is more acceptable than what i saw the previous 2 days, but i don't think that's all that good. tonight i'm going to remove the battery, since i forgot to last night.
-
Did you use the $250 off coupon that came out last night?
It's only for custom built laptops that are over $1349, but with the SSD, I'm sure you made it over that amount.
http://www.deals2buy.com/s/84710051/deals.htm
. -
Of course I did
That's why I bought it last night. I wish it were $300 though. I remember early February HP had the $300 off stackable coupon. But whatever, $250 + $150 is fine.
-
how much did it end up costing you? if over 1,200.. i would have just bought an envy.
-
Well pre-sales tax it was $1059. After sales tax $1160. I really don't want an envy because I really prefer the 13.3 size. I travel frequently, and prefer the smaller size. The one thing I love on the Envy is the trackpad, I don't care for the one on the DM3. But beyond that, the price I paid I think was reasonable. I prefer to have gotten that extra $50 though. $1100 to me out the door woul have been my ideal figure.
-
correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the envy come in a 13.1" trimming? that .2" isn't that much of a difference is it?
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...odexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/ENVY/ENVY13_series
if anything, it's lighter and has a smaller footprint (notice how the space under the screen isn't as big as the dm3's) -
Oh I know it does, I failed to write that I was comparing the 15 inch Envy because of price. The 13 inch Envy starts at $1499. So even after the coupon, it's still not worth it. Also I think the battery life on the DM3 is better than the Envy, I might be mistaken on that though. Also it doesn't come standard with 4 GB of RAM. It's either 3 or 5. 5GB also means another $150 on top of the $1499. Finally that's also not including the price to add the SSD. We're talking a $500+ difference between the two laptops. I was comparing the 15 inch Envy because its base price is less than the 13 in Envy.
-
Just for the record (dm3-1030us):
-Battery life: ~3hr30mins
------50% screen brightness
------.7750V undervolted CPU (underclocked to 1GHz)
------HP Recommended power scheme
------while web browsing, listening to music, and word processing
My battery also jumps from 100% to 94%, but it's more as if the battery is discharging at a steady rate and doesn't know the meaning of displaying 99%, 98%, 97%, 96%, 95% on both BatteryBar and the Windows battery icon.
I'm still very happy with my dm3-1030us. I've managed to get this machine to play at 45-60+ fps on WoW and L4D while still making them look good. The trackpad (I use usb mice anyways) and uneven speakers are my only major gripes. If I had the money, I would go with either of the Intel/Nvidia combos, as they seem to have twice the battery life and perhaps a little less heat. But in terms of bang-for-the-buck, AMD/ATI is king of the hill. -
oh i see.. i was figuring that there would be revolving coupons for the envy, but since it's not in my range i don't pay attention to it.
-
Yeah, I mean I'd love a unibody style Envy, but the price is not worth the aesthetic difference between it and the DM3. I really only have two gripes with the DM3, the power slide switch, and the touchpad. If it used the large glass style a la the Envy or TM2t, I'd have really loved it even more than I already do.
-
I need a little advice. I am considering purchasing an HP dm3 - the one sold by Best Buy. I am also considering a Toshiba T135. Could anyone give any recommendations of which is best?
-
One more question - in reading back through this thread, I keep reading about trackpad problems. What exactly is wrong with the dm3 trackpad? Thanks
-
I am not trying to be a dbag, so please don't take offense, but there are over 200 pages on this thread. When I joined i read each one. It clearly describes what's "wrong" with the touchpad among other things if you took the time to read them.
Plus, if you are considering to buy from BB, just go into the store and play with it and see if it bugs you.
Given pricing $549 for under-speced AMD version at BB, I believe HP is still cheaper, what's your rationale behind going with BB? -
They are comparable machines, so it comes down to which one you "like" best, which one costs less, and service/warranty. I have a friend who worked at BB for 20 years as a manager, he managed GeekSquad when it first started, he says hands down Toshiba has best laptops, but their service is horrible. So if you are going to go with Toshiba just make sure you get a plan through BB/3rd party, because they really do suck at providing you proper service if it breaks.
The bigger story on DM3 is the battery, not the touchpad. Touchpad either bothers you or it doesn't, battery is later discovery that made many people uncomfortable. HP dropped the ball on this one, because for a machine in category of "ultraportable", this is probably the one spec you can't screw up, but they managed to do it. -
Yeah? well I woulda bought a MacBook pro and loaded Win7 for that price. What's the point in a DM3 thread?
-
What's wrong with your battery? I get about 6 hours out of mine, seems fine.
The touchpad is ok in cold weather. Now i am in Thailand (>30 C) and the touchpad is sometimes completely unresponsive. Really bad. -
Is your system under-volted? Mine is set on Performance Mode, about 70% brightness and stock voltages. I get maybe 3.5hrs. Pretty sad. I don't believe that you should have to turn all the features you bought with your money off just to have it last 7hrs (or the promised 10hrs by HP?). I was really under impression it would be 6hrs of USE, but I was thoroughly mistaken
. And now this battery "bleeding" problem with hibernate. I have to say HP didn't follow through on battery.
-
I've decided that I'm going to have to let this thing go... the battery drain, the excessive hard drive clicking, the touchpad, the fan noise and the HEAT, not to mention the shoddy build quality (the silver trim is coming apart already...) are all too much for me to handle.
The only saving grace of this laptop is the awesome keyboard and the fantastic display... but everything else just seems 'meh.'
Should have just gone with a netbook... >_< -
Anyone noticed some vertical lines/columns on the display after Intel Graphics Driver had been updated to version 8.15.10.2021?
-
Well I can't do that because Best Buy only sales it over the web. None of my local stores have it. I want to buy from Best buy because of the zero interest for 18 months.
-
Fair enough... there are other stores that carry the laptop. I know people talked about Sam's Club and Staples. Go play with it before you buy. When I played with it in the store, that's what really convinced me to buy it.
-
and Walmart too.
-
there is a dm3 because it falls within a price range that people are comfortable purchasing the laptop for, and there's an envy 13 because it offers build quality and performance that people are okay with paying.
when you go over the $1,200 mark, you're getting close to envy 13 territory while getting a lower grade laptop.
on a side note, i went to sleep with the battery at 65%.. took it out, let it sit for 17 hours and now it's still at 65%. the battery itself probably isn't the issue. it's either the bios/laptop or the battery breaking in. -
What kind of temperatures were you getting?
-
The temperatures are well within operating range, but where the ram/chipset lie (left palmrest are) is uncomfortable to the touch and the bottom side is no worse. It's extremely BAD engineering because there is no fan or even air vents to dissipate the heat other than onto your palms of your hand.... and thats just basic web surfing... god only knows what'd happen if I loaded up a Youtube or Hulu video...
-
No undervolting. But I have a SU4100.
-
Sorry to hear your experience. While mine is 1044nr from Microsoft. I share the experience of under performed battery with many of us on the forum. I understand under normal use no way it will achieve 10hr, but from my understanding, 7~8hrs of basic use shouldn't be a problem. I felt like I was cheated by HP and very dispointed for the false advertise. Next month I'm going on a one month business trip, China, Thailand, Bangladesh, Morocco, and few other places. I'll be taking all the possible transportation you can imagine. It's gonna suck while I'm on the plane, boat, train or car with 4 maybe 5hr battery(getting a second battery sort of defeat the meaning of ultra portable).
However, I do think the DM3 is quite well built as I've drop mine from 5 feet up to a concrete floor, and my left corn where the silver trim meets only came apart about 0.1 inch and few tiny chips on the trim. I was so afraid the drop might cause internal damage that beyond repairable. To my suprise, my dm3 has work flawless since the drop.
I am keeping the dm3 and give it to my gf and maybe getting the Acer 1810 as the dm3 still quite heavy for my everyday commute and proven long battery performance (8hr+) and lighter in weight -
Apples and potato chips comparison.
This week alone there are $400 worth of coupons on the DM3. It's almost a $500 upgrade to an envy 13.
besides - If you paid much over $1100 for a fully loaded model with a SSD, you are not very well informed.

Ditto... after searching 10 minutes on google I was able to find $400 off on top of "standard HP" discounts. I wonder how many people don't search and just pay the list price...
-
I am sitting in a restaurant now and accidently had some olive oil on my finger. It works quite well on the touchpad.
-
So question for both of you gentleman, did I overpay then? I spent $1160 on my sp9300 with SSD. Is that too much? That's after sales tax and the California e-waste fee.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Some said they paid $900 for a DM3 with SP9300/105M, SSD, and DVD drive, but not sure its true tho!
-
Has anyone bought one with an SSD lately? I'm wondering if they are still shipping with the G1 or have they started using the G2 drive?
