HP dm4 speaker volume problems, volume too low.

Hello, I have a brand new hp dm4 laptop and I love the laptop except for the volume output.

The volume is extremely low, and is not acceptable. I can barely hear anything when watching youtube videos or listening to music. Also, the speakers crackle a litte bit, and sound blown out.

I have updated the bios, the drivers, I have maximized all the volume and sound settings, I have even tried rolling back the drivers and using old drivers. The volume is still low.

Is this a known problem with these laptops? I've owned several HP laptops all with good volume output, but this dm4 is horrible.

I have a feeling the speakers are just not strong enough, and are placed in a bad downward position.

I would appreciate any hep, I don't want to return the unit unless I really have to.

You might be sol with dm4 built in speakers. Some reviews on cnet.com also mention bad volume. You might have to use headphone or external speakers to get decent sound.

If there are volume boost or equalizer setting, set them to max.

BTW, downward pointing speakers are designed for laptop on hard surface, to reflect sound off hard tabletop.

 

The DM4 has the lowest volume HP laptop I've ever owned. On top of that in the 3 months I've had it the right speaker started crackling and sounded even worse!! The DV7 has also the same low volume dilemma. What's up with HP?

 

Seriously they need to do a service recall, and put totally different speakers in these computers for current owners.

I'm from Brazil, and I bought the dm4-1065dx nb in New York - Best Buy. At the first month of use, I had the same problem: the sound turns very low and is crackling a lot.

Here in Brazil, HP doesn't gives warranty to a imported product, so I needed to fix it by myself. Well, I tried.

I tried to change mine internal speakers (PART NUMBER = 608232-001 ), bought in USA too, and surprise: the problem persists.

There is no problem with the speakers, probably the problem is in the soundcard / motherboard or connections, i don't know, and the HP assistence here in Brazil don't know too.

Hi everyone! I'm from the Philippines and I'm so glad I found this thread. Back in August 2010, I bought my very first laptop. I had a hard time choosing between Toshiba, HP and MSI but thinking HP has a better quality, I settled for the HP Pavilion DM4 notebook. From the start, the volume has always been too low. I have to use either speakers or earphones so I can hear what's playing. After 4 months, the right speaker also started crackling so I sent it in for repair. I was told by the dealer that it's a factory defect but HP denied it coz there hasn't been any reported cases of the same problem. And so I started researching but didn't find any, maybe because at that time this model was newly released and not so many have bought it. HP took it in and replaced the right speaker. They had my laptop for over a month and guess what, after just a few weeks, the right speaker broke down again! Yes, same exact issue! And that's not all, rust started to form in the optical drive and it was spinning like crazy! The ctrl key on the bottom right of the keyboard was also popping up from time to time. And so they picked it up again, replaced the right speaker for the 2nd time, replaced the optical drive and the whole keyboard itself. I got it back after almost 2 months and noticed the next day that the newly installed keyboard was misaligned and that it had a small dent on the left side, by the fan. They picked it up again just the day after that for another "repair". I asked for a replacement and they refused. I wanted an extended warranty but they told me that I have to sign this waiver saying that once I sign it, I no longer have the right to demand for a replacement which is kind of unfair for me so I didn't take it. To date, rust is forming in the usb ports and I only have a few days left before my warranty expires. I just filed a complaint against HP to the Dept. of Trade & Industry here hoping they could help me get a new one.
