Just ordered mine. Sure am glad this came out, I was about to jump on either a Thinkpad Edge or one of the CULV ASUS Thin & Light notebooks. This is a much better deal. I wasn't sure about getting the 9 cell battery, but the product demo says you can get up to 12 hours on it, so I decided to go for the deal that includes both batteries.
Does anyone know how much bloatware I can expect to be on this thing? The required option of Microsoft Works isn't a good sign, but it's not hard to just nuke the hard drive clean.

Go into your internet options and make sure that cookies are enabled. Also, get a registered account on bing through an e-mail address, hotmail for example, and register an account for bing cashback. Whenever you click the link it should show a nice little box for a few seconds that confirms you will get 25% cash back through purchases from HP. If you don't get any e-mails or confirmation in the next two days, send an e-mail to bing customer service and they will help you.

how accurate is HP with their estimated build dates? i almost NEED this laptop before June 1, and June 1 is the estimated build date + 5-6 days for standard shipping. im still currently running windows 7 RC and the expiration is set for June 1 -

I still hadn't received an email from Bing, and I wanted to make some changes to my order anyway, so I just got off the phone with HP to cancel my order. I am about to reorder right now and I want to be sure to get the BCB.
Did you guys already have your dm4 in your cart when you went through Bing or did you configure through the link when you ordered? -
Here's mine...

I went back and forth about the optional dedicated graphics card. In the end, I don't actually use my computer for much multimedia besides music and an occasional streamed NFL game (which is limited more by quality of the feed than GPU power), so I decided to just be content with the integrated graphics. This computer is well more than I need for grad school multitasking. Should be fun to see how it handles my usual plethora of office documents and browsing tabs
-
I didn't mess with my cart or anything until I clicked the Bing cashback link to HP's store. I also used Internet Explorer to do the order, as I wasn't sure if Chrome or Firefox would be 100% compatible due to them being more secure with cookies and such, which Bing relies on heavily to confirm that you ordered something.
-
I did it about 3 times bc I kept wondering why there wasn't a Bing logo (it turns out there shouldn't be one)... I think the last time I went through the whole process (selecting laptop, then customizing) after entering HP from Bing.
Do you mind if I ask, what changes are you going to make? I considered canceling mine to go with graphics card and intel wireless card, but (as of now) have talked myself out of it. -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Definitely gonna go for a bigger battery, maybe the 6 + 9 cell, and I might go with the Intel wireless card. I was gonna grab a faster processor as well but after looking at some benchmarks it seems like a waste of money, tbh
Edit: Only thing I ended up changing was the battery. Probably could have called and gotten that thrown in for free but that might have been considered a coupon or discount and voided BCB
Second edit: BCB email just came through for $215 (I forgot they don't include tax). I love that I got this thing for $700 but hate that I currently only have $23.42 in my bank account because the first order won't be reimbursed for a few days. -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Never had any personal experience with them but from what I have heard you usually have it in your hand by the estimated build date. Though this is a brand new model so you never know. -
Really? Where did you hear this? I wasn't expecting it for two weeks or so but now you got me excited.. I really hope you're right.
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
I have known friends and people on this forum that told me they have gotten their notebooks either the day of the estimated build date +/- 2 or 3 days. This is true for most companies (Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba, HP) -
HP really has been very competent in handling what appears to be an extremely large product refresh/introduction. They have met every deadline so far and I would assume that they will continue to do so. Since I am waiting for the Envy 14, I have been watchign the roll out with pleasure at how smmooth everything seems to be. Compare that to Asus and Acer with their product lines over the past 6 months and you get a completely different picture.

Exactly what is the difference between the regular display option and the one that says "For HP mobile" or whatever?
-
Probably includes antennas(probably cables) for WWAN reception while the other one doesn't. If you don't ever plan on getting a internal WWAN card, just select the base option.
-
I checked my order summary and under the notebook, it says "Item processing
(Estimated to ship on June 1, 2010)" instead of "Estimated build date: June 1, 2010" so maybe we'll be getting them sooner than expected =) -

Mine says,

Are most of you who have posted your specs buying the dm4t for gaming? I am amazed at the number of I5-430M's that were ordered. I figured that, with the 25% discount, buyers would be tempted to maximize the cpu power due to the lower cost. At some point, there is a trade off in battery power consumption (I5M vs I7M vs I7QM). But i would have guessed that everyone would be ordering the I5-540M because of its efficient power and cheaper price of upgrading.
Apparently, I am completely wrong.

Update on my status: Order Accepted.

Just ordered mine. I must say that I'm very excited and happy about my first laptop purchase! Here are my specs:
HP Pavilion dm4t customizable Notebook PC
* • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-430M Dual Core processor (2.26GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz
* • 3GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)

* • SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support

* • Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
* • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
Estimated build date: June 1, 2010
Came out to be $889.99 + $37.60 (MO Tax) - $ 222.50 (BCB) = $705.09. Not bad! A 5650 GPU is about the only thing that would have made this deal even more sweet.
To Bronsky:
I will be using mine for gaming, along with many other tasks. After looking long and hard at the reviews and benchmarks on the i5 processors, I must say that the i5-540M isn't worth the extra $$. Not to me anyway.
PassMark CPU Lookup -
I planned on getting the i5-540m for that reason, but figured I will use this only for grad school and some web surfing/streaming netflix/hulu... didnt really seem like a huge need for me.
-
To you, would it really be worth another $75 for the 520m, or $131 for the 540m? I didnt think they'd be, so went ahead and got the 430m.
-
I'm not using mine for gaming, I have a desktop for that and the HD 5450 isn't very good for gaming.
And no, I didn't think it was worth the extra cost for just a little more processing power because the I5-450M should be more than enough for my needs. -
for those who also bought the dm4, did you guys get an extended warranty like I did?
-
Nope.
I got another status update! "Order dropped to factory".
Anyone else at this stage yet? -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
From what I have seen the i5-520 and i5-540 are not $100 and $175 better than the i5-430. Besides, I a fairly certain that the 5450 is going to be the bottleneck of the system and I haven't heard of a game that won't be fine with the 430 -
Where are you seeing that update? I'm not seeing it. This is all I see in status order: Order accepted
(Estimated to ship on June 1, 2010)
I hate how they shipped out my warranty and case sleeve already without the laptop.. it's like a tease once it arrives.
Can I ask you why you didn't get the extended warranty? I did because I had a bad experience with hardware failure on my last laptop and I needed peace of mind because it's HP and it's a new notebook.
I hope HP surprises us and has the dm4's at our doors on June 1st -
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
I hope so too. This is exactly why I usually order pre-built laptops and pay the premium for quick shipping, I'm impatient.
-
I did not get the extended warranty. I'm not too worried about it. If something goes wrong 13 months from now, I'll think otherwise, but I'm willing to take the risk. I could always get another $300 laptop in two years if something goes wrong with this one.
Bing cash back is 10% again... glad I jumped on this deal when I did!
I ended up buying one of these last night to go along with my first laptop. -
It will change where it says "Order accepted" when your status updates like mine. I didn't get the extended warranty because it's a waste of money. Hp covers you for the first year for free. Usually any problems cost less to fix than the warranty, and I can solve any software issues myself. If something does go horribly wrong and it's a super expensive fix, i can always buy the extended warranty and have them fix it (yes, you're not supposed to do that, but o well).
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
Still says accepted for me. God I hope to get this soon.
-
Are you guys crazy ... I would turn my computer off and not turn it on again until June 1. Whatching each step on the process is torture.
It would be bad enough if HP delivered a case and warranty before the computer. I would have to stare at the empty case for days as a reminder of my new notebook.
Thanks for your replies on the I5 issue. My application is a bit different. I do a lot of video editing and I have found that every few ghz helps keep the process smoother. SSD's help by keeping load time to a minimum as well.
My software, which is my company's proprietary editor, is very CPU dependent. I'm not an expert on the software, but I think it relies on the GPU primarily for rendering (at least that's when my old 8600M GT would get hot as hell). I would get an I7-620M on the Envy 14 if they offered it. As far as price, I think the I5-540M is actually $225 more expensive than the base I3-350M. But, with Bing cash back, I can get $55 off that price. So, yea, I think its worth it if you have functions to perform that are either CPU dominant or which you would otherwise pair the CPU with integrated graphics.

I can't decide if I should go with this laptop or this Asus UL30VT-A1. What do you guys think?
-
I say go with the dm4t. I came close to pulling the trigger on that very same Asus notebook, but the specs of the dm4t are much much better and I prefer the design of it as well. The Asus does have much better battery life, but you have to sacrifice performance to get that kind of battery life, which is why it uses a low frequency, ultra low voltage Core 2 Duo. But if you aren't in a hurry, you may want to wait until we all get ours in the mail just in case there happens to be some massive issue with the dm4t.
As for order status, mine says the order has been dropped to the factory and is estimated to ship on June 1.
But wow, I'm really glad I decided to order mine yesterday seeing as the BCB is down to 10% now. -
The VT is yesterday's technology. The DM4T is much more powerful than the VT. The VT probably has a weight advantage and longer battery duration. The HP has a better display, better CPU, better GPU, DDR3 ram, etc. IMO it's not even close.

Order dropped to factory!!
-
Just ordered mine through Costco. This way you get the extended warranty and the great return policy. The only upgrades I purchased were the graphics card, 4 GB RAM and the intel wireless card.
I just have one major concern about this laptop. HEAT. It's small and metal. The DM3's I have tried in stores were suitable for frying eggs. do you think this one will run hot? And....do you think the graphics card will make it run hotter? I guess another concern would be the first run of a new product. There are always kinks to be worked out. How thorough do you think HP has been before launch? My Honda first year Honda civic isn't as good as the ones built a year later!
Other than that, this looks like easily the best machine you can get for the money. Very excited...... -
I have a dm3, and temps are cool.
It's the intel version btw, maybe the one you tried was an amd version? -
Does this have a multi-touch trackpad?
-
Yes it does. The trackpad is just like the one used on the HP Envy notebooks and the dm3, I believe.
-
I hope it doesn't have the same trackpad as the DM3, I have the DM3 and it really sucks for the most part when your hands are sweaty or just wet.
I can't wait to try this laptop out in stores and maybe get rid of the DM3 for this. Then again, I just brought this DM3 a month ago..... -
the trackpad on the dm4 is significantly different from the dm3, you can compare the trackpads by the pictures shown in hp's website. The dm4's trackpad is much more identical to the envy's. I'm unsure if they are the same, but they are physically similar.
-
i read somewhere that most laptops, if they were to fail, would fail within the first 90 days. if it hasn't failed yet, it most likely won't. of course, having extended warranty gives you peace of mind
so it's up to the buyer
-
Yes, it was indeed the AMD version. That's great to know. Now I am officially, fully excited. I wish I had purchased the high capacity battery (standard size) though. Oh well...
Marc -
you can always buy the high capacity battery anytime so no worries there.
btw.. i hate waiting.. now i wish i hadn't been cheap and got standard shipping.. gonna be the longest 5-7 days of my life.. -
They ship all their orders with the same shipping. It will take 2-3 days to be delivered no matter what option you choose.
Status update on mine: "Order in production"
