yeah i've heard that recently. However, you can call Microsoft to get it activated apparently.
I just worry that using the recovery discs will give me even a little bloat. I will try them and see if there are options not to install the dumb programs. My laptop is scheduled to come Thursday, and after a week of use I plan on doing a full review. Overall, Linux Install, Windows Install, and other things i notice during normal use. I do not plan on doing extensive battery testing though.

Thanks for the tips this morning cwink. I've done a little tweaking with the touchpad settings and things are much better.

i just watched a couple different YouTube videos in 1080p and it played smooth and stutter free using the integrated Intel graphics card.
i would recommend the ATI card for those "just in case" moments. it doesn't hurt to have it and you can always switch to the integrated card when you want to save battery. -

I just got my BCB. $222.50 in all. I was able to call and get an $80 credit from HP, so my final cost was only $627.49. Sounds like I got one of the best deals on here. You can see my laptop components below in my sig. I bought it the morning they were released, so I would have had to pay extra for the extra RAM.
Thank you 25% bing cashback! -
nah, you got 25% off, I got 29.4%. 1360 - 400.
Actually, maybe you did because you also got the 150$ off? -

Well after browsing some 60+ pages of this thread, I can finally join the ranks. I purchased a DM4-1065 for $550 on June 24th and quickly fell in love. However within 2 weeks of minimal use the hard drive had begun to click obnoxiously and the computer would slow to a crawl and completely freeze. So after attempting a clean install of Windows 7, running into BSOD after BSOD and being unable to install any wireless drivers, I plugged in an ethernet cable and went to HP's Online Chat Support. About an hour and 2 technicians later I had a repair request in and a box on the way. Skip ahead a day and I'm receiving a call from HP offering me a brand new laptop instead of sending mine off for repair. Seems too good to be true... Well, fast forward 4 more days (yesterday) and I am now the proud owner of a Dm4-1004xx.
Old Laptop (DM4-1065)
-Intel Core i5-430m
-2x2gb DDR3
-Integrated graphics
-802.11b/g/n
-500gb 7200rpm SATA HD
-6 cell battery
-Windows 7 Home
New Laptop (DM4-1004xx)
-Core i7-620m
-2x4gb DDR3
-640gb 5400rpm SATA HD
-ATI HD5450 w/ 512mb DDR3
-802.11b/g/n w/ Bluetooth
-HP Broadband Card
-Windows 7 Professional
-6 cell & 9 cell batteries
All in all, HP tech support is absolutely amazing. I'll be sending the 1065 back tomorrow with a prepaid label, and already have an SSD and an external case to swap out the 640gb from the 1004 on their way from mwave. This is by far the most amazing customer service I have ever experienced, from any company, ever. I'm excited to see how a Core i7, 8gb of DDR3 and an OCZ Vertex 2 will perform on a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate.
I'm still in absolute amazement and needless to say, I'm definitely glad I crossed paths with this company, and will recommend them left and right to anyone looking for a quality laptop at a good price with above and beyond customer support.
And obviously, the proof:

Just saw this official thread. Figured I'd post up my other post here.
Hey guys, just got my new dm4t the other day and absolutely love it! I have had a ton of different notebooks in the past 2-3 years, ranging from Acers to and Apple Macbook Pro 13. I'm not going to lie, for the money, this is by far the best notebook that I have ever owned! It has everything that I could ask for in a very attractive and well built form! Unlike some out there I actually really like the touchpad, it has a very satisfying click to it and works flawlessly for me.
I pretty much went all out on my configuration of my dm4. From the Core i5 540m with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz to 8GB of RAM, and the high capacity 6 cell battery all for $899 with the $400 off coupon. I also got them to give me another $50 back on the purchase so all my options with shipping and tax came out to $904 out the door. Not too bad for a "fully" loaded 14" notebook! I decided to skip on the upgrade to the i7 as it was an extra $100 for a few MHz difference. Also didn't need a dedicated graphics card as I don't game on it.
--------
HP Pavilion dm4t customizable Notebook PC
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M Dual Core processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06GHz
8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
FREE Upgrade to 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
Intel(R) HD Graphics
14.0" diagonal High-Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366 x 768)
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
HP TrueVision Webcam + Fingerprint Reader + Digital Microphone
Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
Full-size island-style keyboard
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard)
Microsoft(R) Office Starter 2010
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

The build quality on this is far superior to nearly all of the other laptops that I have owned, except of course for the Macbook. I honestly was looking to get another Macbook but when they decided to keep the C2D's instead of upgrading them to the i Series like the others, I decided otherwise. THe i5 540 also makes this the fastest notebook I have owned as well, and of course the 8GB of RAM help it as well. The 500GB 7200rpm HD is also nice and speedy and can hold all my music and movies without a problem. I thought the integrated graphics might be an issue with 1080p Hulu or Netflix, but am happy to report that it plays them flawlessly. Previously I have only had 13.3" laptops and was a bit hesitant to go to 14"s. It's actually a nice upgrade. The extra screen real estate is nice while adding barely any bulk to the package. I also like how the 6 cell battery sits completely flush with the unit, unlike some other 6 cells that stick out even though it is their standard battery.
Overall it is and excellent laptop with a great build. I definitely recommend anyone looking for a nice thin and light computer to definitely pick one of these up! -
Xekutr, that crazy man! A fully loaded DM4 for $550, thats some absolute mad luck right there! Only option unchecked was the 1GB ATI card, holy crap! Congrats to you man!
If you would, take a few picks of the computer with the 9 cell battery in it and post them up! -
You got that new one without paying more? That's awesome.

I just received my laptop today after that whole shipping delay debacle. Out of the box, my touchpad does not work. I complete the setup using the keyboard and try to install mouse drivers from HP's site. Windows says the device is working properly but I still can't get the mouse to move from the touchpad. Am I doing something wrong? I tried double tapping the dot on the upper left of the touchpad but nothing is going on.

There's a blue dead pixel center-left of my screen. So I got your problem and mine! I am sending in my laptop for repair. I asked for a concession and they gave me nothing. I am pretty pissed about this whole thing. I am not recommending HP products, HPshopping.com or anything HP to anyone. I do like the laptop though. If I could fix the issue myself without risk, I would instead of waiting weeks for it to come back from a repair center. This has really left a sour taste in my mouth. I guess I will do a review of my product when I get it back from the repair center to make my experience more well known.
-
I'll get some pics of the 9-cell tonight. It really doesn't seem to add as much weight or size compared to what I was expecting. Then again I am comparing it to the laptop I'm writing this on (a C2D Toshiba with a 12 cell battery lol). The white led battery level meter is really nifty though. It's like the ones on the Macbooks and my old Dell Studio 15. This thing really does fly, however my HP logo doesn't light up and I can't get past disc 1 of the Recovery Media Maker so I've gotta figure out what to do there, but other than that these new Core processors are amazing. Can't wait to see what the vertex 2 SSD does.

Do Do you guys experience eny fan noise, cpu whines, keyboard flex, heat issues, like those encountered in the envy?

Hey all,
For those with your laptop already, how's the screen quality? I'm thinking of getting the dm4t or the Envy 14, and I'm looking for feedback.
Thanks,

Yay, I will get my DM4 today! That is within two weeks after ordering, which isn't bad at all considering I live in the Netherlands and used a forwarding service to get it out of the States.
Anyone else in Europe that imported this machine so far? I just hope there won't be any issues with it... But for me personally, this laptop is too perfect to not take the risk -
I can't beleive this isn't asked more. How much battery life do you uys get with this notebook?

Just wanted to update --
After getting my DM4T and case with both the instant $150 rebate and HPA student discount, then plus tax, my total was $750.17 . I then got a $65 credit (thanks to the tips I got on this forum!) when I called and complained that they were now offering the larger HD for the same price. And just this morning, I received an e-mail that my 10% Bing Cashback has been deposited in my Paypal. So my total cost was just a little over $600, with tax and my Targus case.
I don't know if it's case to case since some people have said that their BCBs disappeared when used with other coupons, but I was lucky enough to receive mine. Seriously though, I checked my account A LOT the past 60 days because I was always wondering if they'd taken it off. -
I gotta bring up a few problems I've been having with my dm4. When playing some music/video tracks, the sound will make a screeching/glitchy sound and then resume playing at the most random moments.
My main problem is with the AMD discrete graphics card. I've already had two DM4s that have had the same issue. After resuming standby after about 6hrs or so, the screen will remain black but the computer will be fully turned on. I have to go back on standby mode and leave it in order for it to work again.
I don't have the above issue while running the Intel HD integrated graphics. But now with my second replacement, after resuming use from standby (6+hrs), the led light flashes once, hard drive clicks into place and then NOTHING. I literally have to take out the battery and power and restart the machine each time this happens.
IS ANYBODY ELSE HAVING THESE SAME PROBLEMS?!! (all drivers/bios are up to date) -
-
Figured I would give everyone a heads up to check their battery if they ordered a High Capacity 6 cell.
I ordered one with my dm4t and they sent me the regular 6 cell (55Wh vs. 62Wh) even though it did state the High Capacity 6 cell battery on the box. Anyway I called them up and they are sending me the correct one and figured I'd say something in case anyone else might have gotten jipped.
But overall I love my dm4. So after taking some (actually a lot) time reading through nearly this entire thread, I have picked up what some people complain about the most.
Touchpad: I notice that the trackpad is only an issue for people that rest their other index finger or thumb on the mouse button while navigating with the other finger. Easy way to fix that is to use the tap-to-click and leave your finger off of the touchpad. For me it works perfectly. If you do this and you don't want to make that simple change then do not get this laptop, as you will hate the touchpad. If you do change that you will find it to be just fine.
Another issue is for some when typing your palm can make the curser jump around. Unfortunately there is not an option to turn it of when typing (which is amazingly stupid) like nearly every other laptop. But what you can do is double tap on the little dot in the upper left to turn it off while you type.
Fresh Install of Windows 7: This has absolutely been the biggest origin of complaints. People, before you do a fresh install, BACK UP ALL YOUR DRIVERS. Also, if you don't need to do it don't, as even people that have done all this have still run into various problems.
ATI GPX Card: Some have said that they have different issues with the ATI card. Again, a lot of these can be attributed to people that decided to do a fresh install of Windows, others don't have a definitive fix yet. Not sure if there is a definitive fix but reinstalling windows and installing the PCI drivers first and the graphics drivers last seem to have helped at least one person. Others have had some issues with overheating that seem to be a hardware issue.
Build Issues: Most of these cropped up with the first batch of computers but some are still having issues such as their touchpads not being installed correctly. One member actually pushed down hard on the trackpad and got it to seat properly. Some people have also had issues with the speakers emitting a high pitch noise before playback. Some said a driver reinstall helped while some have changed the power settings for a longer amount of time (I'm going to look back at the correct fix and update this).
That is about all I can think of that really stand out. I'm going to try and look back at all the fixes and update this post accordingly as soon as I get a chance. Enjoy your DM4's! -
Hey everyone. I've been frequenting this forum for quite some time now and have finally gone through the long, arduous process of registering so I can post
Anyway, I am in the middle of pulling together the finances to pull the trigger on purchasing one of these computers. I'm incredibly impressed with the performance/value ratio. I finally went into a store to get my hands on the keyboard to feel if it's the right match for me. It definitely is! However, I would like to comment on one thing in regards to the touchpad issues. I'm not really a big multitouch fan to begin with (probably because I don't have any real experience with it as of yet), so the reported issues with the gestures aren't really a concern to me. However, the previous post in regards to the cursor jumping around while typing is VERY easily solved. Lots of people have been reporting this very same thing, but nobody is really mentioning the multitude of settings HP has provided to make it more usable. You can go into the touchpad properties via the Windows Control Panel, and there is a setting in there specifically related to how wide of an area the touchpad recognizes as a valid gesture. You can set it to only recognize the surface area of your finger tip. I tried this on one of the demo computers and VOILA! no more jumpy cursor while typing. This was almost a deal breaker for me, so finding the fix cinched the deal in my mind. PLEASE, if you're having problems with the gestures and jumpy cursors, take a look in the properties before slamming this machine for the touchpad. It's by far not perfect, but it is very usable.
NOTE: I'm not really sure why the default setting on the touchpad aren't more intuitive out of the box (shame shame, HP), but with a few minutes spent in the touchpad properties, it works extremely well. -
-
i got mine yesterday as well. initial impressions: its good. Don't want to say more until I use it for a week or so.
-
If you really don't like the cursor moving while typing, there are apps like TouchFreeze you can use.
-
Hey, just got mine delivered and I thoroughly love it apart from some pen marks on the lid - any suggestions how I should clean them off? Plain water with a small amount of soap doesn't work. Should I have it returned otherwise?? Any help would be appreciated!
I did have a question about the keyboard as well. Does anyone know if its possible to somehow get a backlit one in place of the standard keyboard? Thanks. -
-
abaddon4180 Notebook Virtuoso
I don't know about the pen marks but, according to HP, you cannot get a backlit keyboard for it. I asked them if one from the new dv5t would work but they said no.
-
After waiting almost 3 weeks to receive mine I had to send it back because of a stuck pixel in the center of my screen that was driving me nuts. Now the estimated build date is August 18th and that is really pushing it for time. What if it in encounters another clearance delay. Needless to say this is probably the last HP i'm going to buy.
-
Has anyone used their SD card reader? I tried to use it yesterday and there is no click lock mechanism like in most other computers and I just slides in, is this right or am I missing something here?
The reason I ask is it is very hard to get the card out once its in there.
EDIT: NM, I got it working, looks like it was already engaged from the factory, just had to click it back in and out and it works great now. -

There are lots of settings adjustments in the synampics touchpad properties that can really tweak things just the way you need them.
Right click Synaptics tray icon(Synaptics Pointing Devise)
Select 'Pointing Devise Properties'
Mouse Properties\Devise Settings\Settings\Properties for Synaptics Clickpad v7.4\
For instance in Pointing\Momentum\Glide, there is a feature which greatly improves/speeds up movement across the screen. Give it a try. I have mine set on 4th up from 'short'(glide distance). Remember to enable(checkbox) in momentum window.
W/re to the palm/typing/cursor jump issue...
Try using the Palm Sensitivity setting in Pointing\Sensitivity\Palm Check. I have mine set to 5 up from minimum(center setting).
"The PalmCheck feature guards against operating the Touchpad with accidental contact. PalmCheck allows the Touchpad to recognize when your palm is resting on it or brushing its surface while you are typing. This will help to prevent unwanted pointer movement or clicks.
If the Touchpad exhibits undesired pointer movement or clicks, increase the PalmCheck setting by moving the slider to the right towards Maximum. If the TouchPad misses motions or taps, decrease the PalmCheck setting by moving the slider to the left towards the Minimum. You are more likely to experience missed motions or taps if the slider is in the red zone"(Maximum)
Hope this is helpful.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Re SD card slot question, if you give it a push, it should click right back out.
-
-
Does the finger print reader work for every site that needs a password entry? and i mean >80%? Or is it only some websites?
-
I might turn it off for surfing... I'll keep it for now to see if it really bothers me or not. It's a lovely feature nevertheless... I just wish you could 'blacklist' sites that you never want the finger print reader to ask for your login for in the future.
But the dm4 is a great laptop, I'm very happy with it. The perfect compromise between power, screen size, portability... My setup with SSD, ATI video card and high capacity 6-cell battery comes at 1.96 kg.
Also the build quality seems excellent; no flex and it seems well finished. -
Wait wait wait this might change everything. What do you mean is annoying about the fingerprint reader? Do you mean that everytime I open facebook for example, that it will ask to swipe my finger? it eliminates the "remember me" function of websites?
-
Is the Bing 25% cashback offer still available? Or any other similarly priced offer? Would appreciate it if someone could point me to either.
Thanks! -

)
In all, I do really like the laptop quite a bit. I'm happy with the size and build quality. My biggest gripe so far is with the display. Seems I'm constantly fiddling with the brightness/gamma/contrast settings so it's bright enough, but not washed out. I have the same problem with my lower end Samsung LCD. I wonder if the display on the Envy is really any better... or just higher resolution... -
Yeah, the Envy has a much better display.
