seems good. may I ask what kind of stuff you do on your computer? Besides very intensive CPU tasks, an SSD shows more performance increase than an upgraded CPU, not to mention the i7s sucks power like vacuums compared to the i5.

Anyone know if Fedex delivers on Saturday? Or will I have to wait until monday to get my laptop?

I chose the free shipping option it came with.

    Thanks!!

I have an 128SSD that I'll pop in. I do general stuff nothing special but I like a faster computer tho.. And I always max out the important specs thats just me tho

For the i7, you think the battery life would be MUCH lower than an i5?

Max TDP of the i5-540 and i7 CPUs are the same, surprisingly. Of course, max TDP is not a good representation of power consumption in real-life usage.
Take a look at this: Review of Intel Core i3/i5/i7 Processors

Yes. I actually had a dv4t delivered. It was nice but the audio had a problem. So I chose the dm4 and am very happy with it. That was a couple of months ago but I seem to remember the touchpad was different it didn't have the fingerprint reader either. I seem to remember thinking that the dm4 was better build design after it arrived.
There are some great deals out there right now.

Can you comment on the touchpad of your dm4? I have been reading quite a bit of issues regarding its poor navigation in reviews.

Hi guys! I just got my laptop a few days ago and i am loving it! No bugs or defects yet and hopefully i never see one on my new baby.

Quick question. I popped in my camera's sd card on the sd slot on the front of the pc but now i can't get it out. How do you remove it? Do i really have to just pinch it out?

I have a quick question, hoping you can help.

I'm going to the States on the 23rd of August for 2 weeks. Do you guys think the price for this will go down by then? I see some super deals available online, but I wouldn't think they'd deliver to a hotel unfortunately. I've been checking Best Buy and Office Depot for price changes, are there any other good physical computer stores I should check out?

Thanks everyone for this thread, it's very informative!

Edit: I've just seen Best Buy's price for the dm4-1065dx lowered to $780 recently, every little helps :)

Hey what superdeals are you talking about? I too am looking for a good deal. You can deliver your laptop to your friend or relative's address, with their permission of course.

For example this thread here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/notebook-tech-bargains/506680-hp-pavilion-dm4-626-after-coupon.html

It's a pretty basic option but that's all I'd need, and $626 is pretty awesome, compared to Best Buy's $780 dm4-1065dx. The only difference I can see between them is that Best Buy's doesn't have bluetooth, unlike the cheaper one!

Unfortunately all my American relatives recently moved over here to Ireland so I have nobody I can deliver to  This deal will be expired by the time I get to the States, but any other good deal that replaces it will probably be online...

On my new dm4t now :D. Random specs worth mentioning: core i5-m430 2.27ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb hd 7200rpm, 512mb ati mobility radeon hd 5450 gfx, intel wireless, high-capacity 6-cell batt.

My thoughts, in no particular order:

    PROS:
    1) ABOUT TIME! I can finally run l4d2 without lagging. I love this. It's a definite improvement to my old desktop, which was some crap Pentium D processor. Speed, baby. Wooh.

    2) It's so lightweight and sleek. Despite aesthetics being the absolute least of my concerns when picking a laptop, the design is nice, and the portability is a definite plus.

    3) The touchpad works well. Whoever says it was poor quality or shaky or whatever is a liar. Two-finger scroll is also fun and convenient.

    4) THE FINGERPRINT READER. This was also a very unimportant factor in chosing a laptop, but dang it's so much fun to use lol.

    5) And all the obvious stuff. Hd space, fast processor, people complain about the speakers but they're fine for me, screen is sharp and viewing angles good, lots of usb ports, etc.

    CONS:
    1) This heats up a bit more than I expected it would from reading reviews. The left side (where the vent is) can get pretty hot, to the point where it's no longer comfortable on the lap (and gets me nervous if I'm using the laptop on any surface where flammibility is questionable lol). I'll be investing in some notebook cooler once I find one with good reviews.

    2) Screen's a bit glossier than I expected. When it's off, I could probably use it as a dim mirror lol. I haven't yet brought this thing outside, but since the majority of the time I use this will be inside, this doesn't bother me much.

    3) Keyboard's gonna take me some getting used to. Idk. I'm so used to my full clacky keyboard with my desktop lol. I guess this isn't really a con at all; just a personal preference thing. Disregard!

    4) Oh, there's a litte bit of flex on the screen. Might be something unique to just my product, but it's not horrible enough that I want to send it in and get a new one. But my lack of nervousness might be cause I also bought the warranty, so if anything does happen I'll just use that xD.

    5) Dealing with HP was a nightmare I'm hoping I an avoid in the future. But yeah, the price was a bit on the high end for me. Would've preferred a better deal on this. And more competent (and knowledgable) customer service reps.

    Unknown O_O:
    1) Battery life? Idk. I just took this thing off the power cord about an hour and a half ago, but since I forgot to adjust settings to be suitable for battery-life testing, I think my statistics for now would be misleading. In case you're curious, it says 62%, but I'd take that number with a grain of salt for now.

    2) Wireless? My house does not has. But I'll figure this out in a few weeks when I move into my dorm..

    Questions for Other Owners:
    1) What sleeve/bag/case do you use to protect/transport/etc your laptop? That's also on my list of stuff to buy soon :3.

    2) What cooling system do you use/recommend? I'm looking at both passive (xpad) and active (fans) coolers right now, so any recommendations would be super appreciated :D.

is it just me, or is starcraft 2 reaaallyy laggy even if it's just on medium settings? please comment cause i just got this laptop and if is this is some sort of defect, i can still return it. I thought the i5 processor + 512mb graphics card could run it flawlessly :/

You probably need to lower the settings or resolution. The HD 5450 is a low-end card. Even the integrated Geforce 320M in the 13 inch MacBooks can outperform it.

Dang, you have to make the settings even lower than medium? I read earlier that someone with a 5450 could run it fine on medium or high tho...

Can anyone else give me any more info on starcraft 2, with the 5450 512mb card? If it doesn't work, I'll have to send back the laptop I've been waiting sooo long for :(

JUST GOT MY LAPTOP! I'm charging it right now so I haven't used it yet...does anyone know how long it will take to charge all the way? Will the orange light change to green or something?

Also, how do I update the drivers and which 1 should I update? Something for the graphics card? This is my first laptop/windows 7 comp so I have no idea what im doing :(

Anyways let me know if you guys have any questions about the laptop itself!

Does anyone else find the touchpad to be positioned poorly? There is no way for me to type comfortably without touching my palm to the touchpad and the synaptics drivers don't offer the option to disable the touchpad while typing. If the palm recognition actually worked well, this may not be an issue, but the more i use the laptop, the more this pisses me off.

umm you know it takes about half a second to disable the touchpad by double tapping the top left corner, right?

Anyways, the laptop came with 60 days of norton...is this worth keeping? Or should I just delete it and get a different security software? Im updating it right now, and its taking forever...

Also, I was wondering, what factory installed software did you guys keep, and which 1s did you delete? There seems to be a lot of useless stuff on the laptop...

i know this post is over a month old but has anyone else experienced the problem mentioned above? just received my dm4t on friday, opened it for the first time last night and come to find that it almost never turns on. i have to remove/replace the battery to get it to boot every time. it wont boot on ac-only, it has to have a battery in. and even then i have to remove/replace the battery to get it to boot. once you hibernate/shutdown the computer, it cannot be started again with just the power button unless performing the steps i've just mentioned. also, i cannot force shutdown the computer by holding the power button. i can hold it forever (i've tried over 1 min) and it doesnt shutdown - this applies both in windows and during bootup. i have to unplug + remove battery to force it to shutdown. this is what i'm experiencing right out of the box...

so every time I want to type, say a sentence like this, I am expected to double tap the touchpad. Then when I am done, I have to double tap the touchpad again to use it. Not to mention, well I guess I am mentioning it, the annoying OSD that comes up in the center of the screen whenever I en-/dis- able it.

The part that bugs me the most about this is that Linux has had this option /for years/! I mean it is really simple, if you receive keypress events disable the touchpad until you stop receiving them for, say, half a second. The code to implement this should not be hard by any stretch of the imagination, unless Windows is so convoluted not to allow this, which may very well be the case.

    To answer your questions:
Norton is very good, but I say just go for a free suite of security software, like AVG or Avira for anti-virus and spybot for spyware

    None, reinstalled windows, reinstalled drivers.

Oh yeah, I guess you're right about the touchpad...It hasn't bothered me too much yet tho.

And thanks, Norton seemed kinda confusing at first, and I don't really like the idle feature (I might just turn it off and scan myself), but besides that its really nice! I'll keep it for now at least!

Could anyone tell me what drivers I need to update my 512mb 5450 so I can play starcraft 2 without problems? Can I use windows to automatically search for it, or do I have to go to ATI's website or something?

    Thanks for the help!

Hey guys. I recently placed an order for the dm4t SE on August 2nd, and it said the estimated build date is the 18th of August. From what I've read on this thread, it seems that HP seems to have it built before the estimated date. How were your guys' shipping rates and experience? Did it ship before the estimated build date? Thanks!

So I received my laptop back from the repair center and now I'm furious. To recap, I sent in my laptop because the touchpad was not working at all. Tech support said that the touchpad probably wasn't seated properly so they had to repair it. I had a couple options. Send it in to get repaired or return it with a restocking fee and then rebuy. Seeing how I purchased it with a $400 coupon, I didn't think I could find a comparable deal. I decided to get a free repair. I barely had my laptop for 1 day and it already went to the repair shop.

Fast forward 21 days and I receive my laptop from the repair center. Sure enough the touchpad works, but my keyboard is all messed up. The repair center didn't seat it properly. There is now some flex to the keyboard and there is a sharp plastic piece that sticks out from the corner of it where the directional arrows are. Also, there are numerous spots where the paint job is chipped and scraped in the front of the laptop. No doubt where they had to pry apart the laptop to reseat the touchpad.

I decide to call up HP and ask for a return and refund. The first representative spends 20 minutes confirming and reconfirming my product number and serial number. I think it was a slight language barrier problem. I was patient. After an hour explaining my situation, he tells me that he has noted my issue and transfers me to a department that could issue me a refund. I get transferred over. I have to explain my situation again. The service rep tells me that I am on my 21st day of my 21 day return policy and she could not issue a refund. I get a little angry at this point because I've been on the phone for over an hour. I explain to her that I didn't even have the laptop in my possession for 24 hours and demanded a refund. She tells me in a stern voice that this issue needs to be taken care of by the resolutions department and that I need my service ticket number and then proceeds to transfer me. I am taken to the regular dialtone automated menu and have to start the whole process over again. I ask the tech support department to transfer me to the resolutions department because I wanted a refund. The nice person asked me what my service ticket number was. I told him that I never received a ticket number. I have to explain my whole story again to the customer service representative and ask for a service ticket number. He tells me that he is going to get the case manager to approve the refund process and tells me to hold. I stay on hold and then he tells me that the case managers are not available for the rest of the day. I ask for a service ticket number again and the rep obliged.

I now await a call tomorrow and will probably have to explain my situation again. I won't be surprised if they tell me that my return policy has expired tomorrow being that it's the 22nd day.

I really like this laptop. I just wish quality control was a little better. I even bought a ton of accessories for this laptop like an HP carrying case, extra batteries, external hard drives and such. This has just been my worst laptop buying experience ever. I'm not sure if I want to buy another HP product again.

@yosup: yeah, this laptop is amazing. But just think, if you have a remote, you don't have to get up everytime you want to change your laptop volume, pause, replay, stop or choose next song or movie. That would be quite helpful, dont u think so?
@enragin_angel: omg.dat's terrible. Dat makes me think again if i really wanna buy an hp product. Hope u'l get a new one soon.

This laptop is really not meant to be a gaming machine. Based on its specs, I would suspect that the 5450 should be able to play SC2 at low-medium settings. The Envy 14 has a much more powerful 5650, but suffers from reduced battery life compared to this machine (and a higher base price).

Tried it. According to the Envy 14 Thread it doesn't like 64bit Windows Vista/7.

The regular one is for 64-bit programs and the x86 one is for 32 bit ones. This is normal for 64-bit versions of Windows.

this laptop does not have an IR receiver. You may be able to find a USB RF or IR receiver + remote, but these are just over simplified wireless keyboards, possibly with more range.

Can someone who ordered the dm4t with Intel Wireless-N let me know which wireless card they have?

I just ordered and upgraded to intel because the Help Me Decide window said the Intel card was a/b/g/n, and I need 802.11a for my school (old, I know). Now I'm having doubts because the only intel card listed in the dm4 media is the b/g/n Centrino Wireless-N 1000. I hope I haven't been misled!
    Thanks!

Wow I feel sorry for you. I'm not sure if I want HP stuff anymore either, when HP spits on their customers like that

Well got mine today! I checked it last night and it was in China so that was fast! I love it so far.
The only thing that seems to be out of place is the bottom left part of the keyboard isn't snapped in all the way. When I noticed it I pushed it and it went down but it's still not flush like the other corners. I wouldn't mind but it's also making my right arrow key fall off. Any ideas for this?

Oh and can someone recommend a free virus protection program.
I don't like Norton, too annoying.

Got a DM4T recently. Very pleased so far.
I noticed the AC adapter delivers 19 volts DC. I have an a number of Dell AC adapters of similar amperage that deliver 19.5 volts and the plug fits the DM4T. I briefly plugged one in and the machine recognized it. Instead of purchasing an additional HP adapter to leave at work, I'd like to recycle a Dell adapter.
Might anyone know if 19.5 volts will be too much or if there are other concerns using such an adapter?

After talking with HP I'm just going to go ahead and send it in for repair. Might as well. Still have my old laptop if I need it, so I should be okay.

    Question about QuickWeb ...

I know the preconfigured dm4-1065dx has QuickWeb (the quick launch OS independent of Win-7). At least, the specs say it's a 1065dx feature.

Do the dm4t configurable models also come with QuickWeb?

    Thanks,

    Marty

I assume that the intel i5 430m and 450m perform at the same level in real world situations?

Because you're on a 64-bit OS. x86 folder is for 32-bit applications. Don't worry about it too much.
