Yeah, I noticed it takes a while to load/adjust the color settings when the machine boots. Also, when it wakes up from sleep, the color settings don't load at all (or were lost) until I right click on the desktop. I don't have to select anything from that menu, just one right click and it adjusts.
I'm pretty sure the ATI driver caused my machine to lock-up one time, but that's only happened once. I think I was watching a video on a second monitor, which requires a lot of coordination through the port replicator.
-
Alright, fair enough. Thanks for the reply!
+rep!
One more thing... when I close my lid for a long time and leave my laptop, when I come back and open the screen, it freezes. It's not going into sleep mode, because I've got it on high-performance and sleep is disabled. I don't know why it's doing this. Any ideas? Thanks once again. -
Email has the benefit of leaving a paper (well, electronic) trail, so that if they later say "we fixed it!" and you still have problems, you have it documented that they promised to deal with the issues.
Phone has the benefit of being more immediate (somewhat... being on hold sucks), and giving you a better chance to argue with them if need be. It's also easier to ask to talk to a supervisor when you're on the phone. If you're going to try to ask them for an upgrade or anything else beyond a special repair, you will probably have better luck on the phone, but do make sure to ask for the name and ID # (or whatever they use) of whoever promises you whatever they may promise you. That will give you recourse if they decide later not to give you that upgrade afterall. -

By freezes, I mean, initially the cursor stutters like crazy and then just stops responding. From there on out, I can't move it, and the laptop doesn't respond to any input from the keyboard whether or not I press the windows key or crtl+alt+del.
Well, it's not going into sleep mode, so waking it up doesn't apply.
Ya. I just press and hold the power button, which shuts it down, and then I press it again to turn it back on. -
Ok, just checking because I had a similar freezing issue, but it required me to pull the battery to get it running again. Have you made sure you're running all the latest drivers?
-
That's a good question... by latest the ones being on the HP site? Yes. I had those, had the problem. Then updated them to 10.7a beta, and still had the issue. Is there a newer version? I went to the ATI site and went through the steps where they ask for mobile/os/family...but when I downloaded the 1mb or so file it said it doesn't support my system.
Do you know what the latest drivers are?
Thanks so much man... +rep! -
-
Hey, just throwing this question out there: does anyone know how to get the keyboard shortcuts to work (I'm mainly looking at the music controlling ones)?
-
-
I had the same problem when it was plugged in. My replacement will arrive on Tuesday, so we'll see if it suffers from the same issues. The current BIOS has been out since May though, so you'd think if it were a BIOS issue, you'd see more complaining.
-
If you unplug overnight...do you wake to find your battery missing 6-8% of it's charge? My laptop was completely off...not hibernating, not sleeping, but off.

I just got the DM4-1060us from Office Depot with $120 instant rebate and $50 HP rebate which will come out to $679. I went back to the Office Depot site and it's now $850! Now time to tinkling with it.

Question about the HP MediaSmart "Auto" settings for the Webcam ...
Most of the "Auto" webcam settings on my dm4 are not accessible, they are "grayed out".
- Open up HP MediaSmart for the Webcam
- Open the "Video Enhancement" menu (the 6th icon down on the list)
- Click the "Advanced" button
- 0n the "Video Proc Amp" tab only the "white balance" checkbox can be set to "Auto".
- On the "Camera Control" tab only "exposure" and "low light compensation" can be set to "Auto".
I'd appreciate it if someone would check and confirm that what I'm seeing is the same on their dm4.
Thanks! -
I attempted to clone to an SSD and it didn't work. I also attempted a clean install and still didn't take. I'm at a loss why it's not working with an SSD and both times it does a crash memory dump. I have a 128gb Kingston V series SSD. Windows 7 HP x64.

I ordered a 160GB SSD with my new hp dm4t laptop and it seems to be emitting a fairly loud high pitch squeal like noise and some clicking sounds. I thought SSD drives were supposed to be almost silent and was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems or if I should ask hp for a new hard drive.
I know that the noise is coming from the SSD drive because I took off the back to expose the drive and could hear the noise coming directly from the hard drive.
here is a sample of the noise
YouTube - hp dm4t ssd hard drive noise
Thanks -
Hmm.. The noise sounds like it's coming from the CPU. As for the clicking.. I have no idea how an SSD could make a noise like that.

I have the dm4t w/i5-540, 6gig, and the touch pad is goofey.
On the pad itself it has the middle line for the left and right click, when I click the left any where near the center line it acks as if I clicked the right click. The damm thing dosent seem to be centered and it driving me nutts. When I point and click left and up pops the tab as if I clicked right.
any way to fix this? -
-
Just a heads up for dm4t owners, a new BIOS update is now available -- version F.17. Found by Z3tor, changes seem to be significant.
-
Hmm.. C3 enabled. This could possibly mean more battery life. Can someone do a comparison test?
-
Maybe just a little in the middle, dosent seem to push down any more though. -
I finally got my system running like I want after 1.5weeks of constant boning... scared fuzzless abt updating the bios..lolz. ANyone try it?
-
I can't bloody edit for some reason...or else I would.
Anywho:
I just installed it, I will report back with any findings I make. Probably be more issues/temps related than battery since I've really run this for 5 min off battery.
But ah ya. So far, so good I guess. -
I did, seems fine
-
Thanks for the heads up. I updated the bios without any problems. Will have to test out some of the new updates since it does seem pretty significant.
-
I feel like my temps are higher.... anyone else?
-
Might want to proceed with caution with the dm4 BIOS update.
The update for the Envy 14 seems to be causing some problems ...
See post: "System Recovery does not work with F.12 A BIOS"
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/502434-official-hp-envy-14-owners-lounge-part-deux-463.html -
-
That can't be right....if the temps up, means fan gotta be running less... which is what i'm kind of feeling.
-
-
BIOS isn't going to change how hot it gets by running something...it only has control over the fan settings. So if the laptop is hotter, it's because the fans aren't running as much. Y
-
I just updated the BIOS. Some concerns:
1. Windows stated it wasn't genuine. Had to reactivate by phone.
2. The performance went from 4.7 to 4.3 with Aero having the lowest score.
3. Had trouble connecting to the internet at first
The fan doesn't seem to activate as often though.
-
Windows not genuine? That's...odd.
I'm assuming that's with the Intel HD graphics? hmm. Try re-installing your drivers.
Ya, I don't think it runs as often either. Although they made it sound like it would run more in the release... I dunno. -
Possibly the BIOS update also changed the "System Cooling Policy" settings for "Active" and "Passive" fan operation.
"Passive": slow the processor before increasing fan settings
"Active": increase fan speed before slowing the processor -
Funny thing is, initially I looked at it, and was still on active. I put it on disabled now...and I THINK my temps are lower. I think the enabled/disabled might have gotten reversed or something with the update. Usually my CPU cores are at 39/35 or so, now they are at 34/31...I will give it a day or two to see. Might be a thought to disable fan always on in the bios as it just might actually be enabling.... that is if you find that your temps might be up.
-
I have a feeling that when the BIOS update was done it tripped the 'Not Genuine' warning. Good thing it can be activated via phone.
-
Hey, does anyone know how to configure the media buttons across the top row? I googled but I'm still confused. I'm talking mainly about the stop, play, pause, next etc. Those buttons. The volume ones work for me and all that but not the ones on the f5-f8 keys.
-
Hi guys,
I'm just wondering if any of you have had experience with the Intel integrated graphics alone and whether it runs fine for everyday tasks like surfing, watching 1080p HD videos (EDIT: Like streaming 2 hour long movies), typing documents, etc? Or is it recommended to get the ATI Radeon graphics card in addition? (EDIT: What type of usage is the graphics card meant for - just gaming and photo editing?)
Also, I read somewhere that some people were able to get HP to give them $80 or 10% off their entire purchase or something. Any idea how to go about getting that?
Thanks! -
-
Does anyone know if there's a replacement DVD drive to a Bluray drive?
-
-
Pretty certain there isn't a bluray option...check out HP partsurfer though.
I haven't heard anything personally of overheating with this laptop. Every review actually said it ran very cool. I used to have a DV2500, and that sucker was hot. But right now for instance, I'm at 34/29 C for the CPU, and 31 for the HDD. You're going to be hard pressed to find a cooler running laptop. I am very concerned with heat, and I made sure I was going to buy a very cool running laptop, and this one does just that.
Screen freezing? Trouble booting up? I don't know man. Haven't heard or experienced anything like that.
I'd say this is the best ~14in laptop out there. I don't think any other laptop looks better, Envy 14 included, has better build quality, better cooling, better anything. I mean, I don't know, I think it's perfect personally. Great battery life too. Yesterday was playing a video and after 1 hour, it was at 81%. This with the high-cap 6-cell. So about 4.5-5hrs video, who knows how much just browsing the web. I bet the Asus gets better battery life since they cram giant batteries in them, but when it comes to build quality, looks, and elegance...the DM4 makes really any laptop look like a turd out there...save for the macbooks and envy line. -
Thanks for the great advice! I think I'm more or less convinced to get the DM4. Just have to decide whether the extra $75 for the ATI Mobility Radeon gc and another extra $60 for a 9-cell battery is worth it.
Thanks again, really appreciate it =) -
I'd personally go for the ATI GPU...I'm assuming by the hesitation you don't game that much, I don't either. But I figured I'm not buying a laptop everyday and I don't know if I might want to play something down the line. If money is tight and you don't game, then don't go for it. But if you can, then I would.
Regarding the 9-cell battery...you're going to be getting at least four strong hours, if not five or six, on the high-cap 6-cell battery. Do you need more? The 9-cell sticks out the bottom raising the entire laptop up. It kind of screws up the sleek aesthetic the DM4 has going for it. Besides, you can always buy it off ebay or something down the line...your call. Just how many hours do you need? And take it from there....
G'luk. -
You got that right! I don't game that much, but there's always that possibility down the road.
What's the difference in battery life between the 6 cell standard and the 6 cell high capacity? I need about 5-6 hours at least, so if the standard one can do that too, that would be perfect. I just realized the 9 cell one is selling on ebay for $49 anyway, which is lower than the HP's so-called discounted price of $60, so that is definitely out for me. -
I think the freezing issues you were hearing about earlier was from me. I've had problems with the ATI card only and not the Intel integrated. I think I had a defected one. It's been a pretty long and grueling process to finally get HP to send me a new model after they failed to fix it for so long. I should be getting it next week and hopefully it'll fix the problem.
I haven't heard many people complaining of the same problem so hopefully it was just me. Other than that freezing issue, this has been a pretty great laptop. I can confirm to get 4-6 hours of battery life on my high capacity 6 cell depending on usage. The design and materials of the laptop are very nice. I have the lowest processor and its plenty fast. If mine works when I receive the replacement, I will consider putting a SSD in -
-
I'll try to report my findings back too.
