After talking to some friends and reading different reviews on these two products, I pretty much decided on the HP dv1000 until I got a chance to look at these two notebooks at CompUSA. I don't know which one to get anymore. Very confused...![]()
If you own one of these notebooks, can I get your opinions on these?
I also have a few questions....
HP dv1000
- Does the glossy screen ever become bothersome when using it for a long period of time?
- Does it scratch easily?
- Do you like the touchpad and the thumb-buttons? Do you find it hard to use the thumb-buttons? I thought it was a little hard to press....
- Does the outside of the laptop get scratched easily? Does the silver paint ever come off and make the outside look ugly?
Compaq v2000
- Does the touchpad area or anywhere inside (silver/grey area) of the notebook ever get scratched or wear off?
Thanks!![]()

2.Well, it has a glossy coating on some parts of the laptop, so I assume that it would scratch pretty easily.
3.I thought the buttons were a little hard to use too. Like, they should have pushed down easier. The touchpad is pretty good though, although I think it could have had a slightly smoother surface. -

Did you buy a new laptop because you weren't satisfied with the HP dv1000? Would you recommend it? Could you tell me a little more about what you liked and disliked about the dv1000? Thanks! -
I think many people like the dv1000 becuase it makes watching DvDs very easy.
Personally, I think the V2000z's have a much nicer look over all. I think its a very clean and efficient design and is the nicest looking machine since apple. -
Yeah, I just got a DV1000.
There's two things I don't like about it.
the Brightview screen is too glossy!
the 12 cell battery is very heavy and sticks out pretty badly.
Is there anything I can do about the screen? -
I just ordered the dv1000 today. Can I get more comments on this notebook from those who already own it? Thanks!
-
It's a sexy laptop and featured in Ikea's 2006 catalogue.
You love it once you've got it in your hands. The looks is really under played in pictures. Trust me, it's beautiful in the flesh. Performance is pretty good as well. -
Hey hey how are you.
I just recently got a dv1000 series. You should check out the thread above this one that says "Newbie Help" and you can read about a seemingly common problem with these laptops. If it bothers you it'll probably help you make a decision.
As for the screen, I actually like the glossy surface. It just seems a lot more vivid and I was pretty impressed with it. Most desktop LCDs and other laptops I've seen seem to have very dull colors and what not. -
I finally got a notebook, the HP DV4000. I used to look at the BrightView screens in store and thought they were so cool. But after having one for a while and looking at it, I don't like it very much. There is a lot of glare, looking at my face is pretty annoying and I don't think the colors are that much more vibrant and better looking than on a matte screen.

For those who ordered a notebook from hpshopping.com...
Where did your notebooks ship from? Looking at my order status, it shipped from Shanghai, China. Do HP notebooks normally ship from somewhere outside of the states? Thanks. -
Yeah they do & so does virtually any laptop available from any of the major players in the market...

Thanks for the info! =)

I just received my HP dv1000 notebook today!
In fact, I'm using it write now to post this message. I noticed that the notebook came with a lot of unnecessary softwares. I got rid of a few that I know for sure I won't need in the future. I know there's a lot more that I need to get rid of but I'm not familiar with some of the softwares that I don't know if it's something that I'll need later or if it's okay to just remove these. Here are some of the softwares I'm not sure if I should keep or get rid of.
- Conexant AC-link Audio
- InterVideo WinDVD
- Muvee autoproducer
- Sony Audio/Fax/Copy module
- Zone Deluxe Game
- Sonic Update Manager
- Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 driver
- Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
- Quick Launch Button 5.10
- Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 / Hotfix
Thanks! -
Conexant AC-link Audio - These are most probably your audio drivers, so dont delete those.
InterVideo WinDVD - DVD player to play some DVD movies. Depends on whether you watch a lot of movies.
Muvee autoproducer - Can delete unless you want to make home movies.
Sony Audio/Fax/Copy module - Must be some sort of driver for a Sony PSC machine.
Zone Deluxe Game - Junk.
Sonic Update Manager - Software to burn DVD/CD.
Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 driver - Your 5/6 in 1 media card reader driver & associated files.
Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP - Your modem driver & associated files.
Quick Launch Button 5.10 - You can set keyboard shortcuts to launch your programs with this one. Depending on your usage might be useful.
Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 / Hotfix - Not really useful for a home user, might as well delete it. If needed in the future MS has it in the Windows update website.
Do remember all of these software/drivers are also located on one of the CD's that came with your laptop & also HP has regular updates posted on their website. -
- InterVideo WinDVD*Keep This is your DVD player
- Muvee autoproducer*Optional-lets you make and edit your own movies.
- Sony Audio/Fax/Copy module*keep sounds like a driver but not sure on this one.
- Zone Deluxe Game*Optional Games
- Sonic Update Manager*Keep this it update's Burner software
- Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 driver*Keep Driver
- Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP * Keep Modem Driver
- Quick Launch Button 5.10* Keep software for quick launch buttons wont function without them
- Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 / Hotfix * Keep Microsoft Update
FYI anything that that mentions a driver keep unless the device attached to it is not functioning and you are replacing it. -
Thanks! That helps a lot~
I have one more question. Where is the remote control located at? Is it supposed to be in that slot on the left side of the notebook? I think my notebook came without the remote. Can someone let me know where I can find it if it first doesn't come in that left slot?
One more thing... Did you guys receive a receipt or some sort of confirmation or a sheet of paper listing the components of the notebook and how much you paid for it and stuff? I thought it was strange that mine didn't come with anything like that. I just received a box with all the softwares and ac adaptor and stuff and the notebook. =( I'm a little worried that I may be having problems with HP. I don't like how things are already missing from the beginning... -
If you ordered it frm hpshopping.com,
you won't get the remote. It's only thru
retail store. My dv1000 (thru hpshopping)
didn't come with the remote.

When I ordered mine I had to check the option to buy it for 14.99 you might have overlooked it. The actual remote was inside the box with all the recovery discs.
As for a reciept I dont remember If I have one that was packed inside the box, I can check but the online reciept has everything you need on it with all the specs. -
oh.. I must have overlooked it. I didn't know that the remote control was a separate thing. Thanks for letting me know.
HP dv1000 or Compaq v2000? =(
