My HP dv1000 (Part PT111AV or "HP Pavilion dv1300 CTO Notebook PC" Pentium/1GB/100GB) finally bit the dust and won't boot up. Luckily, I have backups, so I thought this would be a good time to do a clean Windows XP install.

Using the original Operating System CD, I started the Windows XP install. The 204MB partition I presumed was QuickPlay, but it wouldn't let me create a C: drive without removing the 204MB partition... I'll have to reinstall QuickPlay later.

Anyways, I created a C: drive partition of 20GB and picked a real format (NOT a quick format) but it's taken 4 hours to format 14%! My question is, does this mean I needed the SATA drivers at the beginning of the install? I had thought that if I needed SATA drivers it would've not even recognized the hard drive to start with.

    Thanks for any advice.

AFAIK, that notebook doesn't have SATA, so you don't need the drivers for it. Formatting the HDD can take forever if quick isn't used.
