To anyone who can help me:

I own an HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop. I've had it since October of 2006, and about a week ago I booted it up and the screen was completely broken.

I was using it that same day for probably a couple hours and I decided I should probably shut it down and go do something else (I did have a chill pad running during most of those 2 hours). After a couple hours or so I decided to boot it back up. When I did the screen appeared to be broken on 3/4th of the entire screen. The laptop was not dropped or handled improperly at all that day or any time recently.

I don't have much experience with laptops but I am 90% certain this is a screen issue and not anything else. Since that day I've tried to reboot it a handful of times or more and the problem consists (so cooling it down didn't help any).

I bought the laptop through Costco.com but it was over 2 years ago now and I believe their warranty is only 6 months. I also don't have any extended warranty with HP.

My question is, what exactly can I do to replace or fix my laptop? I don't have a ton of extra money so buying another $700 - $1,500 laptop isn't an option.

I've put together some PCs before but don't have any experience working on laptops.

Would it be possible to order a replacement screen? If so, about how much would that cost and what is the install process like?

If I couldn't order a replacement screen to install, realistically what are some other options I might have?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Yup, cracked LCD panel. You can find replacement panels on eBay and swap one in, that's usually the cheapest route. I'd do the math on selling your notebook as broken on eBay and replacing it with a new dv4 series first though. Since your notebook has one of the defective NVIDIA GPUs that will eventually go bad (there's a BIOS update that runs the fan 24x7 to help prevent that, Intel notebooks got it later than AMD notebooks though) I'd seriously consider replacing over repairing. HP has been much less cooperative about replacing failed Intel/NVIDIA notebooks than AMD/NVIDIA notebooks:

I second ebay for a screen, but if I were going to sell, I'd get it fixed first because your lappy looks in good nick apart from the screen and could pass as near new.

Thanks for the first few responses...

I'd definitely lean towards buying a new screen over selling this laptop and getting a new one. Even if it possibly has a faulty parts inside.

I'd really hate to sell this laptop for only $100 - $200 after paying almost $1,400 for it only 2 years ago.

I did a search on eBay for my laptops screen and there appears to be several ranging from like $70 - $130. That is pretty good news, as I mentioned there's no way I could afford to buy a brand new laptop right now for $700 - $1,500. But $150 or less would certainly be manageable.

My only concern is that I got burned on eBay a few times a couple years ago and I really haven't used it / trusted it since.

Is there any advice on what to look out for or be careful of when buying an LCD screen off of eBay? Any suggestions on what I should trust or what I should avoid would be very helpful!

Also, as mentioned I've put together some desktop PCs before but I've never done any work on laptops. Is taking out and replacing an LCD screen fairly easy?

I can probably Google for it, but if anyone has a "How to" guide on replacing a laptop's LCD screen off hand; if they would like to post it, that would be very helpful!

    Thanks again everyone!

Just recently (12 Nov 2008) bought one from this seller for a DV2602Ca for 80 US$, brand new well packed and fast shipped , replacing it is really easy, download the service manual from hp site for instructions.

Seriously you can see a crack in the screen. Go on ebay buy the screen take apart the screen assembly and you will be all set in under an hour and set back $150
