I've seen several very helpful posts about disabling the lid switch to avoid the faulty screen shut-off. The symptoms described seem to match my problems, but it looks like it might also be a failed inverter. [I just replaced a cracked screen, and only get an image when I first power-up. After that, the screen goes black.)
If my touchpad stills works when the screen is dark (I am connected to an external monitor), does that mean that I don't have a lid switch problem? Does this confirm that I have an inverter issue?
Thanks for the help.![]()

No. You probably have a stuck lid switch. It's well worth disabling it before buying an inverter and tearing apart your screen.

For what it is worth for others, I disabled the lid switch, but that did not solve the problem. I replaced the inverter, but that didn't work either.
I finally gave up and called HP. For $298 they claim they will diagnose and fix the problem, whatever it is. I don't think I have a choice.
If they tell me what the problem was, I will report back on this thread.
Thanks anyway for the help. -

I'm getting jerked around by HP, so I may not be able to throw in the towel after all. Any other ideas about what might be causing my problem?
You seem to know a lot more than they do.
Thanks. -

Many people on this board know more than they do...
Replacing the LCD inverter and possibly the LCD cable are the only two things left that I can think of. The cables are fairly delicate, yours might have been damaged when the original screen was smashed, but it's probably the inverter assuming the replacement screen is good. I wouldn't pay $298 to fix it, it'd make more sense to sell it as broken on eBay and buy a dv4z than to do that. -
Your problem may be BIOS related. I had the same issue after I mistakenly flashed a dv2000 BIOS onto my dv2100. I guess that the two models have slightly different lid sensors.
HP dv2000 lid switch issue???
