I've seen several very helpful posts about disabling the lid switch to avoid the faulty screen shut-off. The symptoms described seem to match my problems, but it looks like it might also be a failed inverter. [I just replaced a cracked screen, and only get an image when I first power-up. After that, the screen goes black.)

If my touchpad stills works when the screen is dark (I am connected to an external monitor), does that mean that I don't have a lid switch problem? Does this confirm that I have an inverter issue?

    Thanks for the help. :D

No. You probably have a stuck lid switch. It's well worth disabling it before buying an inverter and tearing apart your screen.

For what it is worth for others, I disabled the lid switch, but that did not solve the problem. I replaced the inverter, but that didn't work either.

I finally gave up and called HP. For $298 they claim they will diagnose and fix the problem, whatever it is. I don't think I have a choice.

If they tell me what the problem was, I will report back on this thread.

    Thanks anyway for the help.

I'm getting jerked around by HP, so I may not be able to throw in the towel after all. Any other ideas about what might be causing my problem?

You seem to know a lot more than they do.

    Thanks.

Many people on this board know more than they do...

Replacing the LCD inverter and possibly the LCD cable are the only two things left that I can think of. The cables are fairly delicate, yours might have been damaged when the original screen was smashed, but it's probably the inverter assuming the replacement screen is good. I wouldn't pay $298 to fix it, it'd make more sense to sell it as broken on eBay and buy a dv4z than to do that.

Your problem may be BIOS related. I had the same issue after I mistakenly flashed a dv2000 BIOS onto my dv2100. I guess that the two models have slightly different lid sensors.
