Any 2.5" notebook SATA should work. As for as the maximum limits, there probably isnt one which can be exceeded by current hard drives. I think the biggest notebook HDD you can buy is 160 or 200 odd GB. As for as places to buy...I would recommend Newegg, ZZF, eWiz, Mwave & buy.com are pretty good places to look around.
    Prices range from 45 - 50$ for a 40GB HDD to ~210 for a 160GB HDD.

If you're all about performance, you should look into the SATA 7200rpm drives. Those are the fastest for laptops and the size range from 60gb to 100gb.

I have upgraded from a 4200rpm drive to a 7200rpm on my old Sony. The difference is night & day!!!

I have just placed my order to get the Hitachi Travelstar 80gb drive from Newegg. Will see how that goes once my laptop and the drive arrive!

If you are looking at 7200rpm drives i wouldn't buy anything less then the 100GB model which is faster then the 60GB and 80GB since the larger 100GB-160GB 5400rpm drives aren't much slower then the <100GB 7200rpm and offer more storage with less noise, heat, and power consumption. The 160GB perpendicular drives are actually faster then the smaller 7200rpm drives in a lot of the tests.

On the HP web site the max you can go up to is 120GB, so if i get a 160GB hard drive will it work ???

I am pretty sure a 160GB HDD will be fine as long as it is SATA150 2.5inch drive. I haven't really investigate on the 160GB though but I guess it will cost you easily $200 for it!

I bought my 80gb Hitachi 7200 drive from newegg because it has good reviews and the posted speed is as follows:

    Average Latency: 4.2ms
    Average Seek Time: 10ms
    Average Write Time: 11ms

These numbers are quite good. I don't know if the 5400 drive can beat these numbers. Perhaps Burninggrave101 can show me the stats of the perpendicular drives to enlighten me!

As far as noise, I'll be able to tell when the rubber meets the road. But noise sometimes can be subjective so I might not worry about it too much!

    :)

Any vendors offering 160GB perpendicular recording drives ? I am was actually planning to go for two 100GB 7200GB drives (from Newegg) for dv9000t (dv9000t not ordered yet). Now that you have mentioned perpendicualr drives, are they fully compatible with XP/Vista/LInux ? Any potential compatibility issues ?

I can't remember which manufacturer it is, but one of the main HDD manufacturers produces a 2.5" hard drive that is 12mm think rather than the standard 9mm. The 12mm probably will not fit. I think I read the article on Tom's Hardware or some site like that...I'll check to see if I can find what model of HDD it is.
