I was just wondering what the expandable RAM memory is on this?
I have it, and yes it comes with 2 gb already, but I want to upgrade it to 3 gb.
I've looked at HP.com because they now sell this and you can customize it up to 4gb, but their version of the Verve is a little newer(dv2700?). I bought mine at BestBuy fairly within its release, so I have the dv2550.
If the ram capacity is 4gb, can I take out a 1gb stick and insert a 2gb to make it 3gb?
Also, what kind of ram exactly do I put in? Reviews and overview says "2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)." But my box says 2GB DDR2 SDRAM (2 Dimm). I don't know if theres a difference. Help please!
Thanks a bunch!

www.crucial.com should answer most of your questions.

My laptop series isn't even in step 2.
-
You will need a 2gb 667mhz PC-5300 200pin RAM to be exact -
i think the max is 4GB of RAM. you will see 3.2GB of RAM with XP 32-bit.
-
Also, I see your sig. I would also like to upgrade my grafx card one day. How much is GeForce 8400M? And readyboost, I use a 1GB SD card, I refuse to use a flash drive because it sticks out and is huge. I was looking for a 4gb SD card and I can't seem to find one. The one I did find is not compatible? -
GPU is not upgradeable. -
WTF? Really? I can't upgrade my grafx card.
-
Ok thanks. Did not know that.=[
So I heard since I have a 32 bit Vista Home Premium, if I upgrade to 4gb ram it won't make a difference. So stick with 3 right? -
Yeah 4gb will only read as 3gb on vista 32bit
You cant just upgrade gfx cards like desktops as they are soldered into the motherboard. -
You got lucky on your Verve. Nice grafx card and bigger HD. x[
Yeah, I'm pretty new to laptops. This was my first. Why do you have 4gb ram when you have a 32? lol. What 4gb are you using for ReadyBoost? -
Because i planned to switch to 64bit before i bought the RAM.
Im using a 4gb san disk usb stick. readyboost doesnt really do anything. Dont bother with it -
I plan on getting my ram later today. Any good brands?
-
Transcend, Kingston, OCZ.. which ever is cheaper.
-
this thread is very convenient cuz i was wondering some of the same thing. so i cant upgrade GPU, ok i can live with that. can you upgrade the processor, if so what do you recomend. can you upgrade the HD. and going out on a limb here, but you cant change 32-bit to 64 can you
-
Don't think you can change processor or HD. You can upgrade to 64bit. Just buy Vista Ultimate.
-
so whether its 32 or 64 bit depends on the os. in this case vista ultimate or basic
-
Firstly HD is definitely upgradable.
Secondly from what I have read Processor too is upgaradable. Although it could be tough but is possible.
And lastly to upgrade to 64 but you do not need to upgrade to Vista Ultimate. As a matter of fact every single version of the OS comes with both options 32 and 64 bit. Just grab a 64 bit Vista Anytime Upgrade DVD and use Orev's clean install guide stickied on top of this forum for instructions. Good Luck. -
one more question, is there actually a difference between 64 and 32. if so what are some advantages/dissadvantages
-
Yeah the architectures are different that is why they are called so. Flipfire reported a few days back that once SP1 is out the 64 bit version will have a 10% performance advantage over 32 bit. Plus you have the added advantage of using all of those 4 GBs of RAM if you have 4GB that is.
The disadvantages primarily include non availability of drivers. HP should more or less take care of that. Some application softwares might also have problems. Hope that helps! -
thanks man. and for installing drivers, i havent found any problems with the 32 version. when you install whatever you want from a disk, just access the disk, go to the installers, and change the compatibility settings. thats what ive done for everything that poeple said wont work with vista. lol
-
about the vodka, i dont drink so i wouldnt know, lol. and what is the ready boost. is it "RAM" that goes in the SD port. sounds kinda stupid to me
-
Sorry - I deleted that post, because I thought it was off-topic. What I said was (so Guest doesn't sound crazy) is that it's a good idea to keep the same brand of RAM, because there are sometimes voltage differences that cause problems (from experience). This is especially true when mixing "value" RAM with namebrands. After all, you wouldn't mix a generic $2 bottle of vodka with grey goose, would you?
Then I said ReadyBoost really doesn't do anything if you have 3Gbs. I used a 2Gb SD Card for Readyboost and it actually slowed my system down. It's really only beneficial for systems with under 2Gbs. And then I said something like my SD Card sticks out of my HP halfway anyway. Man ... should've just left the post. lol. -
whats the default ram in my verve? HP's special ram? =x
-
Did you open it and check? Some use Samsung - I've also heard some use an unknown RAM.
-
i didnt check. so if its unknown, i get w/e
-
I got samsung for my dv2000 and my dv2500 had an unknown brand, just the hp sticker on it
HP dv2550se AKA Verve
