I was on my hp dv2700 today and I got a message saying that the GPU crashed. After that the screen became all fuzzy with a bunch of colors. I restarted it and the startup screen appeared but it was discolored. I turned it off and let it cool. Now when I start it, the screen is just black/blue.

The laptop is 2 years old bought from hp.com

    Specs:
    Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS
    2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9300
    64 bit Vista

What should I do? What do I ask hp? If the GPU is fried, is it replaceable? How much will it cost?

    Thanks!

    Yep fried.

GPU is soldered to the motherboard so you would have to replace the motherboard. You can buy mobo's off Ebay or from HP's part store.

However, have a look at these links to see if you would want to try this remedy:

Depending on what they deem needs repairing, it can be anywhere from 200 to 500 dollars ($500 is actually on the high side, But I've seen a few that high).

If you don't attempt baking it or find it doesn't work, you might be better off getting a new notebook, chances are the 8400 will just melt on you again.

It's not a card. But you can get the mobo that has the Intel Integrated X3100 graphics.

If your dv2700 is Intel CPU based, the mobo with Intel X3100 part number is: 460716-001

I guess I will buy the motherboard with integrated graphics
and see if I can get it installed

In eBay those are between 150-350 USD, technically it doesn't matter who you buy it from. Since product price doesn't reflect quality (exactly same part, unless someone is selling used parts) take one of the cheapest.

Replacement isn't too hard but for a first timer it will take hours :) I can replace fujitsu Xa2528 motherboard in 40mins but new laptop models still take up to 3 hours if I haven't done them before. Basically it will take a long time and you need another computer next to you so you can check service manual pdf and perhaps extra info from the internet.

So today I was going to buy a new motherboard and I thought I should at least try my laptop again

This time it booted up normally and after about 30 seconds of activity, the screen became discolored and after a slight freeze it said that the Display driver nvlddmkm has stopped working and has recovered. I then set the Appearance to Windows Classic and the laptop is working (although it is pretty slow....)

Can I just use my laptop like this indefinitely or do I still need a new motherboard?

    Thanks

It might work for another day, maybe a year. You will never know when it might crash again, and you could loose important data, etc. If you use it as a primary computer it might be better to replace the mobo, if not you could just deal with what you have

If I am you I will just back up all your information, and start planning to buy a new one. Its not worth to fix unless you manage to find a motherboard for 150 or less. computers are really cheap and fixing an old computer its not worth it.
