I'm NOT a die hard fan of anything or any brand, but after looking around so long, it would seems like the macbook pro series are the most dead silent and high quality laptop....Im considering the new mbp 13 inches and it has 7 hrs battery life....

hey naji, you mentioned in another thread that you're living in lebanon, so I was wondering if you knew of any retailers that have a decent variety of HP notebooks (the dv3 series, preferably)? thanks

You have nothing to worry about. The laptop runs cool and noise is minimal. I could only hear the fan in a quiet room. I'm only made a point about the fan noise because I was expecting it to be completely silent when it's idle.

Anyways, I think any laptop you get that is this compact with this much processing power, you're going to encounter heat and fan noise issues. I've read numerous forums on Dell's 14z and even the macbook pro, and they all have similar problems. Until they figure out ways to significantly reduce CPU and GPU heat, or come up with more efficient cooling systems, we'll have to live it.

My belief is that the root of all these problems it the 105M.

I would be utterly shocked if a laptop with a P-series CPU with an Intel 4500MHD has any heat/fan issues.

I plan to make a video showing my DV3T vs my brother's Compaq to compare fan noise. My DV3T is sooo loud :(.

Look at the previous thread pages...

    Hey Hiptanaka,

2 days ago, i found a website that has the Hp dv3t-2125, which has the blue ray reader. it's an online shop. www.sia-lb.com

I was going to buy it, but now i'm really worried about the fan noise/ heat!
Over here in Lebanon, these babies are really expensive, and not all stores have the return policy!

mine..HD gets up to 55C when under load which will kill your HD in the near future. Plus it made my palm rest super hot and uncomfortable. The fan is on all the time, almost as loud as the previous gaming laptop Gateway FX I had. I disabled the fan ALWAYS ON in bios still no use.

HP was good about it, listened to my reason, email me a return label at their expensive. My only loss was the 39.99 2 days shipping I paid, but thats my choice and I have no problem eating that.

All those heat and fan noise were doing nothing more than browsing the web and watching video.

I wouldn't be surprise if it is. Nvidia is known to have overheating problem with their notebook GPUs. Didn't Apple, Dell and Hp file a lawsuit against them last year. I wonder what happened to that?

all of us are speaking about the continually working of fan, actually i think i started discussion about this issue, but for anybody that wants to buy this notebook: "this is really good, design, display, keyboard, sound of speakers, battery life... everything is nice, even temperature, at least in mine it is not HOT, just while gaming the right side get warm, and i think it is normal, you have 512 mb dedicated graphic card in 13" notebook.
and about fan: i think it is soluble, because i used this completely silent for few days before updating windows and some hp gadgets, so i hope somebody could call hp support and ask about issue.

Yes for sure it sounds like you guys are experiencing nvidia video card issues. I have the intel 4500 w/P8700 (2.53 ghz) and it runs cool and no fan issues. I am also running windows 7 beta which runs perfectly and beautifully.

I just got my DV3t and am currently playing around with it/installing programs. Anyway bringing up a question I asked yesterday...should I upgrade to Windows 7 or wait for the actual official windows 7 to come out. I heard the upgrade process was kinda weird.... Also, does doing a clean install affect a computer's performance in terms of speed? and if so, is there a guide for an HP? all the ones i've seen have been for Sony lol.

I would sooooo love to keep mine, its fast, and compact and LED is just fantastic. Im still wondering if its really an Nvidia issue...meaning, the HDD idle and under load had higher temperature than the Video card...and i doubt that the fan is broken, I just wonder what's making the fan non-stop.

I personally would never buy an HP compact laptop with a dedicated GPU. That's why I always recommend to people to stick with the 4500MHD unless they really are into games, otherwise the MHD will run everything else without so much as a hitch and will run cooler and give longer battery life.

Problem is on these forums people are very quick to blast the 4500MHD because it's not capable of playing graphic intensive games so they always categorically recommend dedicated GPUs.

Also, in my humble opinion, if you're going to be gaming, then get yourself the DV6 or the HDX16... these laptops weren't made for gaming and sticking in a dedicated GPU in such a small enclosure just isn't smart, man. But that's just me....

YEP, fan is loud all the time, not a moment of rest. As for heat, it goes up when installing programs or watching high def videos like MKV files. In both cases the HD heats up to 55c

PS: Just realized one thing..on two occasions, when I power off the computer, i hear grinding noises from the HDD. So Perhaps I just have one that has a bad hard drive.

NO, mine isn't HOT during web surfing, and fan is not loud. Just it is working continuously without stop.
but I believe it is software problem, it was working for few days really silently, updating windows and some hp gadgets changed everything.

To those who have a dv3t with a Core 2 Duo P series processor, did HP install DDR2 RAM or DDR3 RAM into your system? I'm wondering if they have a different motherboard depending on whether you configure it with a Core 2 Duo T series or P series processor, knowing as the P series are compatible with DDR3 RAM and that DDR2 and DDR3 slots are different.

About ergonomics, this notebook is really good and typing is nice, but it has two problem

    • Lack of play, pause, next & per touch sensitive buttons, i don't know why HP use just volume controls and wireless?

    • in mine lack of light view keyboard,(for everybody that want to buy this machine, don't forget backlit keyboard it is essential

I've had my dv3t fooor about 3 days now? and I absolutely love it :D. It's fast, the screen is really nice and its everything I wanted in a laptop :D. It runs cool, sometimes warm on the bottom, but not so warm that you can't put it on your lap. Also I can't tell if my fan is "continuous" because if it is, its quiet. Not silent, but quiet. Also the backlit keyboard definitely helps out at night lol. Don't know how I ever lived without it before this laptop xD

My friend said he tried to output blu ray from dv3t to TV using HDMI but it give some error message about display?

Anyone with blu ray rom could verify if you can output it to TV?
One of the reason I bought this was to carry around and watch blu ray on TV where there is no blu ray player.

Guys...got the fedex label and shipped the DV3T back It is a fine and fast machine but I'm OCD and noise just drive me bunkers. I love windows also and not fanboy of any particular brand.

Just bought the new 13.3 inches macbook pro w/7 hours battery. This thing is absolutely silent, not one fan sound is audible even when under load. With screen 50% brightness and surfing and doing office work, battery meter which is continuously updated shows over 7 hours. I got the $1199 model and get 100 off with student discount. I also spent 60 bucks to upgrade 2 to 4 gb DDR 3 ram which took about 10 mins tops.

Once again, I'm NOT an apple fanboy but just want to give those reading and trying to decide an alternative

    macbookpro = 1199 - 100 student discount = 1099
get an ipod touch 229.99 plus tax then get 229.99 back from apple rebate
keep the 229 rebate and SELL the ipod touch.

This machine would come out around $1050 out of door for me. Not expensive at all!!

Yep, the new Macbook Pro certainly is nice. I had one, but ultimately didn't like OSX so I returned it. The mouse acceleration (not touchpad) is jacked up, and using Windows for 8 hours a day at work, coming home to OSX just felt weird.

Really wish Dell or HP could match Apple in terms of hardware.

^ You must mean build quality, since hardware is up to the manufacturer. All three use Intel chips and Nvidia GPUs, so the hardware isn't much of an issue. Of course, to make your notebook cheaper, plastic is the obvious alternative to aluminum (Of course, Macbooks have this aluminum pitting problem :p)

Okay, I posted this in a different dv3t thread but I feel like I should post it here too:
I have some bad news. I have had my DV3T since the end of May and have had NO complaints since day 1. But something happened over the weekend. I was using the computer as I normally do, I think I was checking my e-mail. I was running the PC on my 9cell battery and moving it around the house as I needed. When I went to return to my bedroom, I put the computer on my bed. As it made contact with the bed, a squeak sound came from the computer and the screen turned completely white. I leaned in closer to the computer and smelled some odd fume. I figured maybe the screen just froze so I turned it off and back on, but before a boot screen could be displayed the screen went completely white again. I knew something was wrong. I called HP's customer service, and they had no resolution (they really didnt even understand what I was complaining about, they would give me instructions as if they hadn't listened to a word I said). I am now waiting for a box to be shipped to me so I can send it in to be serviced . Very surprised, and very annoyed! Anyone have any ideas what happened?

i am so sorry, it is really bad news, for your notebook, and for HP service. it shows that all the bad comments about HP services is not wrong :(
But about your system, i think it was on HIGH PERFORMANCE mode and when you put it on the bed, it close its air went and fan couldn't cool your system and heat cause bad effect...but there must be system that boot the system if there is extreme increase in temp am i wrong???

bad luck dude, the last time I remember this happened was the introduction of Nvidia 8400m GS card on dell xps 13. My friend had two of them that broke. There were two causes

    1) GPU burned out

    2) Mobo burned out due to GPU heat.

that actually is a good theory, but i was in HP recommended settings mode - and the only program i had running was firefox.
as for the GPU, i bought the dv3t with the integrated graphics card, no Nvidia for me.

i used it under air conditioner, but no different :( the air stream from air went was cool & cool & cool! that shows inner area of notebook is cool but fan works without stop. i don't know the reason, in a really cool room while you are working whit WORD in power saver mode( that means low performance so low heat) does it must run all the time???
i played a call of duty 3 this morning for more than 3 hours and it was good, frames and sound of game was nice.most of the time fan works loudly but machine stayed slightly cool, except of some part around fan exhaust and right border of palm rest, but it wasn't hot, just WARM.

Four things bothered me about this laptop.

    1. When i first turned the thing on, it would never get past POST and would display "No bootable device selected." I had to manually re-insert the hard disk and pad it down with cotton for it to recognize.

    2. The hard disk is terribly annoying. Its not loud, but it makes noticeable clicking sounds even when idle. Apparently, this is due to "aggressive hard drive parking" and affects some Fujitsu (the brand used in my DV3T), seagate and hitachi drives. HP's Hard Drive ProtectSmart feature also forces the drives to park more often, which protects them in case your laptop falls, but also generates an annoying, incessant audible clicking noise.

    3. The fans are extremely loud for a few seconds right after I turn the lappy on. At least for me, they are silent after start up or when I watch movies. Laptop also runs cool as long as I dont block the vents.

    4. The amount of crap that i had to disable/uninstall/update to get it to boot under 45 sec.

In the end I just cannibalized my old lappy's 7200 rpm hitachi, used the one that came with the dv3t as an external, reinstalled a clean version vista, forced microsoft to activate it and re-installed all the drivers.

    now i love my dv3t.

UR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! i love my MBP, but the user interface is just.. .strange to me. Its easy and nice to use, but strange. I have just found out that the file transfer rate on MSN sucks for MAC!!!!! MS lets you do P2P transfer on msn where as for Mac u have to go through central server (apple). it takes like 1 hour to transfer a 5 mb song..

I'm thinking about reordering the Dv3T again maybe I'll have better luck and HP's generous return policy makes it risk free...

Ok, I really really love the DV3, just went to bestbuy to play with the lower end model again. Also apparently lots of you guys have the fan noise but none just died yet...and there is a 30% off coupon out again for HP. So I placed another order and hope I have better luck with this one than previous.

    P8700, 4 GB ram 320gb 5400rpm HD, G 105M ( I can't live w/o a video card) LED, WIreless N 9 cell battery, Backlit keyboard. vista 64 bits Plus 2 days shipping (39.99) yea.. I can't wait...

1037.26, estimate built date Aug 12,
Hopefully I'lll have better luck with this one. If it's still loud like last one, Ill just keep it as it is. For me, convenience and power pro outweight the con of noise. I looked everywhere, there is not another laptop of this power and size at this price....
