Hello all, has anyone upgraded a dv4000 to Vista yet? HP does not list it on their upgraded list, so no drivers!
Here is my config, can I upgrade to Vista Prem?
    - dv4000 CTO
    - Win XP SP2
    - Pentium M 760 (2.0 Ghz)
    - 128mb ATI X700
    - 1GB DDR2
    - 80gb 5400rpm
    - DVD+/-RW/R DL

Will I get decent proformance? or is Vista just not for this PC?

Your set-up more than covers all the requirements for Vista. You may want to boost the RAM, however, if you plan on gaming under Vista.

No real gaming anymore (xbox 360). But, I do want to do some video encoding and streaming mpegs to the 360. Will this work OK under Vista?

all ur video encoding depends on whether there are codecs and programs that work under vista so that is very specific to ur needs. check the sites of these programs and see if anyone mentions vista compatibility. Vista will have most of the drivers for you and as long as the drivers on the HP site match the hardware you got then sure why shouldnt you use them?

Your system can handle it. The only thing I would do is get 1 more Gig of ram

Your system specs are fine for Vista. Your problem is that HP is not supporting Vista on that model so you won't be getting drivers posted for your system most likely. That isn't a huge deal as Windows will find most of the driver you need anyway. You should either be able to use default ATI drivers or modded ATI Catalyst drivers for your graphics chip. Audio could be another story, though. On most systems, Windows finds and installs an audio driver, though on some systems the driver is so buggy and lacks so many features it's basically worthless. Also, there's no new Vista-ready BIOS for your system, because HP isn't supporting it on Vista, so you may run into weird issues with standby and hibernate modes. It's tough to say what will and will not work, since I don't know what hardware changes have been made by HP going from the 4000 series to the newer series.

If you don't mind hunting for drivers and possibly having some minor hiccups, then I say go for it. Just realize that HP has no intention of helping you out with drivers and the like.

If you do do it, see the Vista drivers thread stickied at the top of this forum. Hopefully some of those drivers can help you out, but again... it may be hit and miss with which ones work.
