Ah. You sure you got that model number right, Shopgirl?
This is the laptop that that model number refers to.
On any account, go into your bios and look for an "always on" option in regards to the fan...

I forgot the 4
Its dv4-1430 us, Moonlight White + I bought it 6 days ago
Item page on hp:
http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/rts_notebook/rts_notebook//3/storefronts/NU985UA%23ABA
I'm an idiot today, always on was enabledThanks - its totally silent now! Am I looking at a much hotter palm or is it not usually that different?
I love this touchpad/buttons - such an improvement. -
Hey guys, STAPLES is offering a dv4-1430-us for $550 + you get a free printer. I just bought mine and I am pretty happy about the purchase. Love that its 64-bit and a Core 2 Duo, most notebooks around this price range are 32-bit and feature a Pentium Dual Core.
-
Np. Regarding the palm rest, seems like there isn't that much of a difference. But you're going to be the judge of that.
-
Thanks - still very cool, will see after a full day
The staples deal is good + they do electronic rebates too which is so much easier. -

The 1400 series that's being shipped now seems to have all the fan/cooling problems resolved. I've only read about one instance of cracking, so I'm not sure it's that big of an issue, provided you take good care of your computer.
Don't actually have my dv4 yet, so I can't comment on battery life, but try reading the user reviews on hp's site. I recall there being a handful of comments regarding that. -
Its been running the whole day, about 4 hours with the fan ao disabled. It's lukewarm on the bottom left - only a tiny bit of warmth on the left palm area. Big improvement over my earlier model from 08.
-
Hey, Shopgirl, could you post your temps?
Here is a very small and great program to see your temperatures.
Abbadon:
The temperatures seem to be under control now. Haven't heard any temperature issues in a while. The cracking seems to be an anomaly more than anything. You're probably looking at 6 hours with the 12-cell. The 105M should be fine... -
I purchased a dv4t from HP back in April (and after reading this thread, apparently have the hot "1300" series, wonderful... that's what killed my last HP laptop).
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with their LCD alignment? I have the LED backlit screen with a Webcam. Since the day I received it, there is a black bar on the right and bottom sides of the screen. Likewise, on the top and left, the screen goes behind the bezel trim. There is no adjusting this and popping off the trim shows that the LCD panel itself is mounted correctly and with no way to adjust.
I haven't been able to find anything about this online so I figured I'd post. I already sent it back to HP once, and they "fixed" it, and by fixed, I mean it came back no different. (They also had to fix my USB ports -- it arrived without USB working at all except thru the combo eSata port). Looking at it now, I'm almost wondering if it's not actually the display panel that's defective, but the bezel itself -- it seems that it's not equal widths on the left and right sides.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks,
Chris -
Has anyone tried using their SD card slot for Readyboost? I have Vista 64 bit, 4GB ram, and would like to speed up the boot process. I was thinking of getting a Sandisk 4GB Extreme III SD card and just have it always in the slot for ready boost. Don't like the idea of using a USB Stick since I tend to break them or hose the port. Would appreciate any comments on whether it is worth it, size card I should use and if the card reader is capable of utilizing the Extreme III's speed capabilities.

For any gamers out there, I can report that the following games can be run at these settings and FPS.
Geforce G105M / no overclock
NO AA
NO AF
Trilinear Filtering with Triple Buffering enabled
Windows 7 64bit RC 7100
Counter Strike 1.6 60 FPS 1280x800 V-Sync everything maxed (i don't bother with AA or AF)
Counter Strike Source 60 FPS 1280x800 V-sync enabled everything maxed
Team Fortress 30 FPS 1280x800 everything set to low (apparently this is a very shader heavy game)
Left 4 Dead 30-45 FPS 960x600 everything set to low (at the end of the Dead Air campaign the fps dropped to 15s however it still was playable (aka the horde didnt kill me)
Call of Duty 4 without tweaks it ran at about 60 fps but it stuttered like hell.
On my gaming pc this game stuttered like hell until i did the following
add +fullproc to the COD MP shortcut (this enables multiprocessor support on the quake 4 engine)
Enable DUAL VIDEO CARDS (yes i have no idea why did removes the stuttering)
open the console ingame with ~ and type in pb_sleep 500 (my stuttering might be due also to PB not really being vista or windows 7 or 64 bit compatible) this reduces the number of times punkbuster polls your hardware (doesn't stop cheaters anyways, look at any punkbuster game, i wish developers would stop doing this)
COD4 45-60 FPS 960x600 All special effects like shadows etc off. Texture resolutions set to normal, model quality set to normal (if you set it to low, the game still renders characters within 20 feet in normal, however the sudden calculations that the game must do inorder to add that geometry has a more detrimental effect to the game then allowing the game to run with just normal models)
Halo 60fps 1280x800 everything maxxed
And Battlefield Heroes and Company of Heroes both run extremely well based on your settings.
Prototype barely runs at 18 fps.
Street Fighter 4 can be tweaked (lower quality than i want) to get to 60 fps (almost necessary if you are serious about playing this game).
All my CVS2 and CVS3 MAME games run fine along with Marvel vs Capcom 2 through dc emulation. -

Thanks for the answer. I am really having trouble deciding between this and the Dell Studio 14z. I think I am leaning toward to dv4t, though.
-
Does anyone know if you can Hackintosh this computer? It would be a fun side project for me to do.

I am going to BB tomorrow to look at the Pavilion dv4t and Studio 14z to make my final decision. I really hope I like the dv4t better because I like its specs better.

Have any of you guys already ordered the FREE Windows 7 Upgrade Kit from HP?

I am having dv4 1242 tx. Fan is continously on battery even if doing no activity. Also when i connect o AC power fan spins at full speed after charging for while creating loud noise. Bios is F.30.
Seems like new dv4 series have loud fan or I am facing the problem??
Plz reply.......... -
Go into your bios and check the "Always On" fan setting...
-
@ nu done that but still problem persists
-
I dunno man... you sure it's off? Try updating your BIOS or reverting to an older one and try again.

Off topic and apologies if I'm repeating, but if anyone's interested I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 as a dual boot on my DV4-1041 TX. All the hardware works EXCEPT sound, which you can fix by:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
and at the bottom of the text file that opens just add:
EDIT:
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1.
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1
Then save, reboot, apply System->Administration->Update Manager.
I also installed the nvidia proprietary 180 drivers:
System->Administration->Hardware Drivers, and i can confirm they work well!!
Another tip: Fonts. I don't like the anti-aliased fonts on this screen, in both Vista and Ubuntu, they look blurry and give me a headache. I tried SegoeUI from vista with no anti-aliasing which looks OK in Vista but not so good in Ubuntu. So installed the Apple fonts from here:
http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/how-to-use-mac-fonts-on-ubuntu/
Then System->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts
and set all my fonts to Lucida Grand 9 point, except window title to Lucinda Grand 10 point bold, with monochrome rendering and I am happy with it.
Right-click on the desktop and select Change Desktop Background-->Fonts-->Details:
96 dpi, no smoothing, hinting full.
I had to also configure Firefox: Edit->Preferences->Content->Fonts and Colors->Advanced->
everything to Lucida Grande 12, and deselect "Allow pages to choose their own fonts...".
Works well and looks very clean and readable.
I have the F30 BIOS.
Ubuntu boots quicker than Vista, and the heat seemed less, especially under the hard drive area, i think because Ubuntu doesn't use the swap file with 4 gig ram, at least not like Vista. CPU usually under 40 deg C. I have it installed all the media playback codecs. Really happy with Ubuntu on this laptop. I wanted XP but could not install it, but Ubuntu has really improved for me since I last tried it (7.04) and i can recommend it on the DV4Attached Files:

I ordered my dv4t laptop.
Got confirmation on 28th July at 5:16am Eastern Time(US) that my order has been shipped via Fed Ex.
Now when I us my tracking number to track my order it says:
No information for the following shipments/FedEx Office orders has been received by our system yet. Please try again later.
Its been more than a day now and still seeing this.
Does it takes so long for fedex to update this information? -

I don't know if this has been addressed yet but does anyone know if the NVIDIA GeForce G 105M 512MB that comes in the dv4t uses DDR2 or DDR3 memory? I assume that it is DDR2 but I don't think it says on HPs website.

Ok, this is ridiculously OCD, but is anyone else's keyboard slightly lopsided? Looking at it from the front, esp the spacebar - there's a lot more space between the keys and the unit on the left half. When I push the left shift etc ones, the whole board moves up/down a bit (not on the right side). My old one's entire board is more "in" the unit with almost no space on either side + is even.
-
FInally I can see some activity on my fedex...
it now says Picked up SHANGHAI ,CN
Estimated delivery Aug 5
dam it seems so far.. i though ppl receive it around the ship date itself -
Same thing happened to me, karan. Shipping notification on the 28th, and FedEx is only just now registering my tracking. It's probably wishful thinking, but I hope it comes earlier than it's estimating.

People with the white - do you see the lights (bottom front left) glowing through the top? Faint in the light but glows pretty bright in the dark.
-
-
So strange....(BTW, I mean the top of the palmrest, not the top as in lid
Its like two little circles of light, the blinking one is more faint + the always on is the bright one
-
-
j/k - the one on the far left is the "Power On" the middle one when lit indicates the battery is charging and the right one is hard drive activity. If you bounce the computer suddenly, the hard drive light on the right will change to red indicating the Drive Protect feature is enabled (protects hard drive from drops, bumps, etc) -

LOL
Yup I'm talking about those, what I mean is - I can see them through the actual plastic of the computer - right where your left palm sits. They shine through about 1/2 an inch in from the edge.
Didn't know if that's how it is on everyone's or just mine. It looks like a blur (not an exact circle)for each, the power on is the largest and the hard drive activity one on the right is smaller.
You can't see it so much in normal light, but I happened to be using it in a completely dark room w/ just the TV on last night. The lights were pretty bright to be coming through the actual base+ I had never seen a that on any laptop before.
Is anyone elses keyboard lopsided a little - I think mine isn't installed exactly right. The left side is a little more "up" and not as tight. Ugh. Why can't I be normal and NOT notice these tiny things - lol!
Got 3 compliments today on the white! -
i got the white cover. looks awesome
i wonder if anyone has installed a mac os X on this baby? -
You can kind of see what I mean in this pic. Left side space from key to bottom is about 3x bigger than on the right side.
Was thinking maybe it just isn't seated quite right - might be something I can re do myself?Attached Files:

Normally wouldn't have either but its a lot more noticeable IRL. I sit a little lower than my desk so it was in plain view the 1st time I turned it on. Plus, the whole left side moves a bit when I type there.
-

Hey everyone... I'm probably getting a dv4-1435dx at Best Buy for $650. It's primarily for school, and I'm not much of a computer person outside of surfing the web (I don't play games or anything).
So is there anyone here who has this model? Is it a good buy? I'd appreciate your input, thank you. -
Light should not be escaping from the leds through the bordering material and palmrest and the keyboard should not shift position. I play alot of left for dead on my notebook using wasd keys and they do not shift.
I however have the greatly superior black version (matches my HTC touch pro which i use as a 3G wireless router). -
10char -
Its the ctrl, shift, fn, windows, z, x, and alt....guessing there's a bottom left screw that's missing or loose.
the touchpad light shines through also! someone look at their white one in a dark room and tell me I'm not going crazy lol.
Friend just fried his with a cup of coffee right into the keyboard - ugh. Are the keyboard covers a PITA? What a mess - second time it happened to him too!
