I'm not sure if it's just me, but does anyone else think their optical drives are SLOW? I mean, i'm just reading a dvd in Nero (and burning an image to the HD) and it's taking 24 mins already and only 85% done. I gave up on Toshiba Satellites for this HP but when they worked, I could do the same in less than half the time.

Is my drive defective? it's writing at over 5000kb/s but notice it drops to less than 300kb/s sometimes....does it have anything to do with how much activity I have occuring in the background? i'm guessing this is so because since i'm burning an image to HD, the HD is already getting bogged down by using WMP for mp3's, surfing, skype, etc.

if i just let my laptop sit untouched, would it read the dvd and make an image quicker?

What kind of optical drive is it? DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW?

Laptop drives are not as fast as their desktop counterparts.

it's a dvd-rw, and dvd's freeze for a quick second when on battery power too...wondering if it's defective.

Are you ripping a DVD to your drive? It usually takes my notebook at least an hour to rip a dual layer DVD in iso format to my drive. I think you are doing good if it's ripping a dual layer DVD and it's 85% in 24 minutes. I've got a 4200 RPM hard drive, so yours might be faster, so that might be a reason.
