Which version of the dv5000. The 'dv5000t' or the dv5000z. If it is the 'z' then all you need to do is to backup the SWSetup folder and have a Windows XP CD. Let the windows installation run and then install all the necessary drivers from the SWSetup folder.

If it is the 't' version, then the steps listed in dv2000t/dv8000t re-installation guides should work since essentially you will be dealing with the same basic issue of SATA hard drives.

Yeah, the basic issue is with SATA drivers. Also note that some of the newer XP disc's that HP is shipping have SATA drivers already slipstreamed. If this is true, then all you need to do is just backup the SWSetup folder, burn those recovery discs and install Windows using the CD provided by HP.

If you want to use your own copy of XP, then you will have to follow the directions listed in either of those guides. There might be small changes to the upgrade process, but the basic idealogy should be the same.

I have dv5000. It has XP Home edition 2002 running.

I want to upgrade/fresh install XP Professional. When boot the machine with XP Prof install CD, it copies the install copies and then stop saying the laptop harddisk is not connected! (either it is powered off or not connected).

I never faced this kind of problem with any other laptops or desktop.

    Any idea please.

    Thank you.

You need the Intel SATA drivers for the XP installation to recognize the hard disks. Either slipstream them to your XP installation or install using an external floppy. There are several guides on the forum on how to do this. Might not be exactly for your particular laptop but still the steps are similar. Search for the one with the dv8000t, it shared most of its hardware with the dv5000t series.
