    Hello,

I've done some searching on this older laptop, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I throw this out to the experts on this forum.

I was looking at upgrading this laptop for my mama, (it's her laptop - and she refuses a new one). I can get the 384MB of DDR system memory up to 1GB (can't find 1GB sticks of DDR - I don't think they make them) and the 60GB Ultra-ATA HDD to a Seagate 160GB HDD.

The processor is the only thing left. I've seen some information through Google of people saying the processor is soldered onto the motherboard. Is this true? It's an AMD Turion MT-34 that I would like to replace with an ML-40 or ML-44. Anyone swapped these out or know if it can be done?

Lastly would be the screen (1280x800 glossy) that I would like to also replace with a 1440x900 matte screen if possible (and cheap enough). Any info on that?

    Thanks in advance.

No, it's not, and the service guide documents this. Swapping in a faster CPU is doable but upgrading to 2GB RAM would have a far greater impact. You want Crucial PC2700 or PC3200 1GB SODIMMs. Or just replace the 256MB stick, save your money.

Thanks. I don't have the service guide anymore (nor found it online - I suck at googling) so I didn't know that. I figured it could be since I did it on my old nc8430, so why not the consumer laptops. Great info to have. Thanks again.

Awesome. Thanks. I'm definitely doing the system memory. I found 1GB sticks for $25 each (Crucial). Whether or not I do anything else is up for debate still. I figured if I could get the processor online for cheap (they are old) then maybe. Otherwise, system memory at the very least, 384MB is killing me, (even with Ubuntu running).
