accidental damage... secondly, from what i seen on this thread nobody really

took 5400RPM 320GB HDD. i know i need some extra storage b/c i save lots

Its ok man, get some sleep. I assume you are young enough not to yet be encumbered by things like work and other not so fun responsibilites. Ahh the good life. Take care and let me know when you get a full battery test. Lates

I took the 320Gb.... like i said earlier... c:\ is like 280Gb or something like that... I'd recommend splitting c:\ in two and having a second storage area where a system restore can't erase stuff you want to keep safe.

I split mine into c:\ 100Gb and the second part became g:\ 180Gb

    Very Handy

It might sound stupid but is the 9200m gs a dedicated GPU?
    Thanks in advance

Can someone please help me out??

So if I want later to upgrade the GPU, can I replace my 9200gs with a better one?

No you won't be able to. There are some laptops which theoretically can be upgraded, however there really are no cards out that you can upgrade with.

^ You'll be just fine with the 9200gs if you aren't a heavy gamer. That's why they have PS3 and Xbox 360.

The 9600M-GT has 32 stream processors like the 8600M-GT in your ASUS. I don't know what the exact differences are between the two cards, but I know for a fact that the 9600 has faster standard clocks. As far as I can tell, the 9600 is performing at its expected levels . . . though I have not seen another machine's benchmarks with the 9600.
People who do rendering and mathematical calcuations would want to get the faster CPU. For example, if it takes an hour to process something on the 2.0GHz processor, it would be worth it to get the faster processor because you can cut that time down by 10 - 20%. A faster processor can make a person a lot more productive in that instance.
Most of us don't do stuff like that though, so it's not even close to worth it. I got the P8400 and it's very fast. Vista is extremely responsive and I have yet to encounter any problems multitasking.
Yes, you are right that the P8600 is not worth $50 over the P8400 (for reasons I noted above).

About the RAM - I also got mine with the free 2GB upgrade, and so far haven't had any problems gaming. For Call of Duty 4, I think it is just barely cutting it though. I suggest waiting until you get the notebook and trying it out before you buy 4GB. Maybe 2GB will be enough for the games you play. If not, you can easily add RAM.

You need special memory for notebooks. The dv5t takes 200-pin, PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) SO-DIMM memory. I like this stuff:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251
    Very nice price AR.
I have a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 . . . it is a bit too small for gaming. I suggest going for something standard size, not notebook size, for gaming . . . much more comfortable.

Man I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this laptop since in two weeks I'm off to college and right now I have a custom pc with a overheating video card. I'm scared I'll get this and then the xps m1530 will update with a DDR3 9600 GT.

My main concern is the 1680 by 1050 resolution. I use that resolution now when I play TF2 on a 20" monitor. Pretty much all I want is a great condition to play TF2 on decent settings.

I don't understand why they don't offer 1440x900 on this laptop. I had that on my xps and it was good but I'm afraid to find out that maybe the 1680x1050 would be too much. If anyone has pictures of how things look on the screen like that I'd be much appreciative.

the 8600 gt on the asus preforms so well because its ddr3 not ddr2. but the 9600 gt is still a better card, on the whole ddr3 on the dell it would have to be a thicker notebook because of heating issues with ddr3 plus the laptop would cost you more than the hp for just a couple of frames

I was guessing it was my CPU that brought down the score. Do you think it's also because I got 3GB of memory ? (Sorry for the noob question )

I'm very sorry nwperformance !! I made a big blunder in my calculations :(
It was acutally 75% after ~35 min. So my guesstimate should actually be 2hrs 20min (+/-5)
I'm currently in the process of creating my recovery discs so can't do a complete battery testing at the moment.

Ps. Thanks for the rep aespinalc :)

    I'm back!

Took back my dv5 this morning after discovering a LCD fault which saw a single backlight led (oh what appeared to be a led) shining through the image as if it was translucent... Our guess is that the white refractive defuser layer which is applied to the back of the LCD either had an air bubble or poor adhesive which made the appearance of a white dot the size of a pin head.

Anyway... the sales staff at the Good Guys were at a loss and had never seen anything like it before and had already arranged a replacement prior to me getting there. 15 mins later I was out the door not only with my new-new dv5 but I had also managed to sell a dv5 to the salesman who was curious about which laptop to buy lol! I could sell ice to eskimo's!

Still setting up all my software again, currently installing crysis for curiosity and time demo testing. I'll let ya know how I go.

I do feel with this new laptop however that the DVD eject button doesn't feel very confident when pressed, no definable click like the last one did?

oh well it's not a big problem :)

Welcome back ! Glad to see things were sorted out - even though it meant replacing your current one.
Thanks for the earlier gaming data/stats - looking forward to the Crysis stuff..

Hmm.. My laptop's DVD eject button seems to be a little soft but I do get the click before the eject..

i belive most of the drivers your looking for don't exist for xp yet, almost all new computers with vista on them dont have any drivers for a down grade on the os. This is most likely because of direct x 10, and some other minor hardware changes. If i find them i will post

Ramjetr that was the problem with mine and thats why I returned it... The button didnt actualy push in, I would have to push the button along with the whole disc drive inward, with a good amount of force just to make it pop open. I hope I dont have any problems when I recieve my new dv5t with different specs!!

There isn't a way to turn off the fan, laptops don't have those sort of controls. You wouldn't want to do that anyway . . . the fan needs to stay on to get rid of heat. Heat is created even if the machine is idling.
I haven't heard of anything trying to get XP on the dv5t yet. Could you use a virtual machine, or possibly remote desktop into another machine that has XP? I think the latter is your best option.

Only things I've found as far as drivers go for XP are Intel Video, or nVidia video, HP Quicklaunch Buttons, and Intel Chipset.

No SATA drivers that I know of, unless they are contained in the chipset driver package.

    I don't have my DV5T yet, so I haven't been looking hard...

I've also not decided if I'm keeping it or not since it's a freebie from HP. I may just sell it new in box.

Well it is a DV5-1004NR. Does that make a difference? I really need to figure out how to run this software. As I said it only supports XP. It is a 20k program and work is counting on me to get these laptops running it. I am kind of in a bind. Thanks!

I know that even by having a DV6500t, that the track pad is not perfectly aligned underneath the space bar (Which I feel like it should since the space bar sets the center of where your hands will be). It is very OFF to the right!
The only reason why I think HP designs it like this is to match the OVERALL design and has forgotten to consider the accidental touches that a person's palm can do.
I know that on their voodoo envy 133, they have included a proximity sensor that disables the track pad when a user is typing, etc.

New users of the DV5t, do you still experience this issue like the DV6000T where you can accidentally press the track pad while typing? Has it been approved?

You may have wanted to do a little more research before you suspected you could get a 20k XP-Only Program running on a laptop that was built for Vista...That sounds like it could be a very costly mistake.

Have you tried asking the HP online chat people, I find them to be generally very helpful when it comes to drivers.

    =======================================

DVD EJECT BUTTON - anyone else has the same issue?

Hi All: i've read more than a couple of these "dvd eject button" issues thus far on this thread. as someone who's getting closer to ordering, i am increasingly curious about this. would be nice if people can chime in on this issue.

i'm thinking of ordering it through Costco.com. Pros/cons?

the alternative is to see how much i save through the Academic Purchase Program.

dv5t: PRICES at various divisions of hp.com?

i wonder if people have done a "price check" of sorts of the various "departments" of hp.com and seeing which has the best deal - by best deal, i include things like including the warranty or accidental coverage, as we may not typically buy, say, the 3 yr coverage, but if the difference between the 2 and 3 yr coverage is $15, then it's a no brainer. Sort of the "all in" price, to me, is more important than the "a la carte" price because by the time you order, you're really only looking at the "all in" price. Of course, not everyone wants the same warranty/service and accidental coverage, but many would want at least one extra year because few of us would only intend to use the dv5t for only 1 year!.

    thx in advance!

HWMonitor will tell you the temps of the CPU, GPU and HDD, it tells you the max it reached the min and what it is right now. I user it all the time and always keep it open.

That's a notebook/portable mouse, not ideal for gaming. I have a tough time playing Counter Strike with my Bluetooth Microsoft 5000 mouse . . . it is too small, and there's not enough control.

I only searched Newegg, but this is the only full-size Bluetooth mouse I found:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826105053
    Awfully expensive though.

I suggest a larger mouse for at-home use, and a portable one you keep in your laptop bag. I've used that kind of setup for years.
Congratulations! That's the first thing I thought when I took it out of the box - it's beautiful. High maintenance (you'll have to clean it a lot, I recommend buying some microfiber towels), but beautiful.
That's a good program, and you can also use CoreTemp (for CPU), and RivaTuner for GPU:

    Hey there,

My words were in reply to ramjetr's post in which he said he didn't feel a definite click to his eject button.
In my post I pointed out that on my laptop I *do* have a responsive eject button - you have to hit it in the center with the tip of your finger, press a little and Voila! it pops out :D
I think the problem is that since it has a glossy coat, your finger tends to slip & you end up pushing the whole button & the CD drive in to eject. It's happened to me too :p

As far as I know it's physically impossible for a stock-clocked 8600m GT GDDR3 to get 4400 in 3d06 @ 1280x1024. That score does sound about right for 1280x800 however. If you are correct though, you have the most powerful non-OC'd 8600m GT in the world, so kudos. Screenshots are welcome of course! :p

Either way, as far as I can tell the dv5t is scoring exactly what it should in 3d06.

    Hey,

Was doing research on what laptop to buy and I stumbled upon the dv5t and I have to say I love. So much in fact that I took the plunge yesterday with the following specs

    - HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
    - 160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam for HP BrightView Infinity Display
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - FREE Upgrade to Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN from 802.11b/g WLAN
    - No High speed 56K modem port
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

And only after did I discover this wonderful forum. I just had one quick question, is there a reason no one has yet to order the 160GB 7200rpm HD? I feel like im crazy because no-one has yet to mention it/ test it and its obviously the better HD.

Anyway glad to have such well informed consumers.

    =======================================

    Hi Terry,

congrats on such a high end machine!! wee!

i'm close to ordering a lower end version of yours, probably with the P8400, etc. May i ask a couple of questions?

    - which "division" of hp.com did you order it from? how did you compare the various divisions in order to compare their prices?

    - did you check the prices obtainable via Costco.com's hp.com link for customization?

    - i'm about to do this and very interested in which avenue to go through, i.e. which division of hp.com gives the best price, or, alternatively, do it through Costco.com

    - may i kindly ask what price you got?

    thx!

    Hey everyone,

I'm looking for information on the integrated HP HDTV tuner - mainly what kinds of inputs it allows. I've already ordered my DV5T with P8400, 9600M GT, etc. This is going to be my college notebook, so I would add the tuner in a heartbeat if it had an s-video or component input to hook a PS2 up to.

Anyone get the TV tuner? Is it just a coaxial input or is there s-video or component?

    Thanks!

I didn't get the 160GB 7200RPM hard drive because 160GB isn't enough for me. I bought the 160GB 5400RPM drive (before they changed it to the free upgrade to a 250GB drive) and I'm going to replace it with a 320GB 5400RPM drive, which is faster than the 160 GB 7200RPM HD and it has a higher capacity. :)

    Quick question on the warranty..

Both my girlfriend and I ordered our notebooks with 1-Yr Warranty with accidental drops and spills.

Question #1- What date does the warranty start on? The day I ordered the notebook, or do I need to activate it when I receive the notebook?

Question #2- During the year I am in warranty, no matter what happens to the notebook, is HP going to fix/replace it free of charge, or are their any charges I need to take care of?

I wasnt aware that there were separate divisions for HP, i just went to HP shop online and clicked my way to the dv5t,

Unfortunately i didn't think of Costco to buy this machine and never checked it out, however through HP I have the student discount, the instant rebate and the 5% off coupon code and got the whole package for $1272.61 (after tax).

So it was actually a very competitive price that I was comfortable with

A 350gb 5400RPM is faster than a 160gb 7200RPM??!??? I thought it would be the other way around (please forgive my ignorance I always understood that higher RPM meant easier access to the information as well as the larger the size the longer to find info (that however is only really noticeable after about 400GB))

Here are some benchmarks(click on "View all products" at the bottom):
    http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/hard-disks/average-read-transfer-performance,675.html

If you get the Fujitsu(160 GB 7200RPM) drive, there are at least 6 5400RPM hard drives that are faster.

I can't say for sure that his instance is a finantly faster.... but his theory is this.

The Platters on which the data is stored are the same size.... a HDD with twice the storage must mean the data is more tightly packed onto the platter. Therefore if two HDDs (say 160gb and a 320gb) at the same speed and one has twice the storage. Then in one revolution of the disc, the higher capacity drive would have the ability to read twice the amount of data....

So even though the 160gb is 7200rpm.... a 320gb with the same number of platters at 5400rpm should be able to pull twice the data off in 1 revolution (regardless of rpm speed) as the 160gb.

Thats the theory anyway. There's other things like burst cache speed and the likes which affect overall performance of HDD's to make an easy comparison of speed.

    Rammy
