Can someone recommend a good wireless router? Going to order from newegg with the 4GB memory. Thanks.

i wonder why hp doesn't "take a page" from Dell and learn from them? i mean dell.com's highly graphical time line showing buyers the stage at which their purchase is at, i.e. selecting components, assembly, testing, boxing/packing, shipping...
my "expect built date" when i ordered last week was shown as 8/19th and the wait is a real bummer. i didn't want to pay more for shipping so i just took the standard free shipping. from everything i read from the other contributors here on this thread, i think hp is delivering these around the 10th day after order date, that is, it shows up at the delivery address at roughly the 10th day.
sigh... so impatientdon't they realize that people want instant gratification in the summer of 2008?

I called HP and got 100 dollars back with there price guarantee and they said in order for me to qualify for the 400 dollar coupon I would of had to of spent 1299 dollars but since I didnt they would only give me 100 because I called.

I cancelled my order after seeing all the heat problems people are experiencing, though its not epidemic proportion but there are enough posts here to get me concerned, and if you guys remember a while ago the news about the nvidia 8400 8600 chips being overheat and defective, well, just for reading pleasure...here is more
http://gizmodo.com/5035980/inquirer...8800-9600-and-9800-graphics-card-is-defective
if they are right for 1 time, the 9600M GT is also affected, maybe thats why all the heat? ..... -

The inquirer is usually heavily biased against nVidia for whatever reason.

I have to say right now i love HP, I just called bargained and got the difference between what I would have paid and what I did pay (a modest 200$, which I actually think is more than i would have gotten had I reordered) So now my lappy with the following specs

- Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)

- 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
- 160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

and a very nice printer is only costing me $1,107.20 :-D Needless to say I'm thrilled -
****it, I have wait to buy a new laptop with the new gen of GPU and now they say all nvidia GPU are defective... That sucks a lot.
I am still within the 21 days return so I am thinking about shipping my dv5t back and get a laptop with an ATI GPU. -
Do any of you think $400 off coupon and the Nvidia GPU failure is more than just a coincidence.

After looking at Dell, Sony and Apple, decided to give the HP a look. From the stats which I have been looking at, this looks like a beast at a pretty nice price.
Then again, I'm no pro with notebooks as I have never bought one! -
@HoustonJoe, Ive been doing the same research as you and I have to say that HP has some of the some of the strongest offering, the Dell MX 150 (something like that) is similar in price and product if your looking for a comparison. Depending on what you need and your general taste is the only thing that can determine which laptop is for you.
Has Chaz posted his review of the dv5t yet? I cant seem to find it anywhere and hes been mentioning it for a while -
i did a clean install of vista on my dv5t...seems to be running about the same speed as a normal HP install with all the bloatware. (and i noticed my windows exp. index score went down??)
also i cant seem to find the driver for my fingerprint reader, does any1 know where it's at. HP tech support gave me two driver files. one was the software which installed, and idk what the other did, but it says now that the finger print reader is not detected?? -
I just ordered the dv5t last night. I almost didn't because I was worried about the heat. But I figured this was a pretty good deal (I hope so).
I paid $1,053 out of pocket (including a $70 printer with MIR, taxes and free shipping) after a $400 coupon (It's funny, you had to spend $1299 to get the $400 off, and my config came to exactly $1299) . I will be getting a $70 rebate for the printer and (hopefully) 5% cash back from the live.com cashback program. So in the end, I should only be out about $930.
Here are the specs:
HP Pavilion Entertainment dv5t customizable Notebook PC
* Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
* Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
* 15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
* 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
* 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
* FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
* Webcam Only
* HP Color Matching Keyboard
* Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
* No High speed 56K modem port
* SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
* No TV Tuner w/remote control
* 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
* Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
* HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
plus a HP Deskjet D1560 Printer
Estimated build date is August 21 -- add that to 5-7 day business free shipping, well I am looking at about 3 weeks. I hope it is sooner.
A couple of questions:
1. What is the standard HP warranty? I did not upgrade that or anything? Should I have? Should I get a 3rd party one, like SquareTrade?
2. I didn't get the Brightview Infinity. Not sure if that was a smart decision. But I didn't think it was worth the extra $50. Was I wrong?
3. What is the best way to keep this thing cool (other than not turning it on )? I heard this thing can run pretty hot. Although, I do not do hard core gaming or anything like that. Is there a stand or something that helps keep it cool (like the iLap for the Apple)? -
Main things I've been looking for have been a mutli-functionality (like some gaming, school work and misc inbetweens) in a 'viable' price range.
And yea, the other I was looking at was the Dell M1530 which seems to be in a similar range. -
Quick question:
I ordered my Dv5 like a day or two before I found out about the $400 off customized laptop. Is there anyway I could get that and save some money on my part? All I managed to use was the 5% and student discount but $400 is much nicer than that -
1. Cancel the order and resubmit using the coupon. Careful though; apparantly only the first 2700 people can use it. I was one of them.If you go this route, configure your order to checkout and make sure you can use the coupon *before* canceling your current order.
2. Call or chat with customer service and ask them for a price guarantee and tell them with the coupon. -
Nobody is concern with the nvidia GPU problem on 9600 GT ???

My question is regarding the heat issue of the dv5t. I tested my gpu temp and it ran at 77c while playing a game. There were no issues at all while playing on the notebook. The only problem i'm having is when i connect my notebook to a 22 LCD. I normally put the setting at 1600x1050 with all the settings maxed. I would be able to play for about 20 minutes and then i would see fading lines on my screen. After a while my notebook just shuts off. My temperature reading was at 77-80c, when the fading lines appeared. I don't understand why my native screen on my notebook can handle 77-78c easily and my external 22 lcd screen has fading lines when it reaches the same temp. I used a cooling deck and an extra fan on the side where my graphics card is located at. Just wanted to know if you guys are experiencing the same issue and also if there is a way to fix this problem. Any comment would be helpful. By the way this notebook rocks !!

Im a little concerned. I knew somthing would happen. A defective gpu is one of the reasons for me getting rid of my xps. The problem is following me.

-
Guys, relax. The 9600GT is not the same as the 9600M GT. The problem is with the G92 and G94 chips, not the G96.
Look at the chart here:

more bad news... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhh i think im just gonna get a sony FW with ATi graphic..

lol
It's the same inquirer article being regurgitated by different websites.
Gotta love the internet -
-
I sold my xps to avoid the 8600 GT and bought the dv5t for the new gen GPU to avoid this kind of problem ... -
I put in an order for a dv5t yesterday --- the $400 coupon made me do it
Since I am not a gamer I ordered the NVIDA 9200M instead of the 9600M to save heat load. I do have the BluRay drive so need a NVIDA card.
The NVIDA 9600M GPU is rated at 23 watts
The NVIDA 9200M GPU is rated at 13 watts
also ordered the Intel P8400 CPU in hopes of saving a few watts over the higher clock speed CPUs
So at full load this configuration might save 12 or so watts. Since I am not sure of the total wattage, have to make another guess as to percentage savings. Say 10 percent or so to add to battery life and reduce heat load.

Can anyone describe or point me to a site showing how to change out the RAM in the dv5t please
-
GUYS SETTLE DOWN, THE INQUIERER IS BIASED. THEY ARE ATI FANBOYS.
CHECK THIS OUT. THE 9600MGT is based on the G96 chipset. You are all fine... for now.

It's pretty much like most notebooks. You turn the notebook over, unscrew a small plastic cover in the middle to expose the RAM. You'll see 2 RAM cards stacked on top of each other. With a tip of a pen or nail, nudge the 2 metal clips on the sides holding each card and then pull it out.
Reverse the process for installing the new RAM.
Just try to hold the cards from the edges and avoid touching the tips with your fingers.
A 10 mins procedure at most. -
i popped it opened and after pulling the side latches the RAM stick sprung up to nearly a 45 degree angle. Is this suppose to happen? Do I remove it with it in that position?

thanks a bunch! mine should be here within the next 2 days
(my sister just go hers thats what I was looking at before) -
Just make sure you line up the notch of the memory with the notch in the slot and you should be good to go. -
Hey guys. If anyone of you have the dv5t equipted with the T9600 (or know about the processors performance with this notebook), could you please respond to this post.
I run very intense cpu applications on the computers that I own, for example, photoshop, video editing, and some cpu intensive games. However, I have always heard that the difference between clock speeds of processors on laptops are not that noticeable in many applications. I was wondering if upgrading to the T9600 from a P8600 would make a difference? Thanks in advance! -
The difference between the P8600 and the T9600 is in cache size (frequency difference is ignorable, about 7-8%). If you run intensively parallel applications or massive multitasking jobs, the cache will be a performance boost (I know how limiting cache can be as a frustrated software engineering student) , but for games and photoshop I don't see a reason to favor the T series. notice that it's TDP is higher thus producing more heat and burning through the battery faster.

whatsoever. And, this is with multiple open layers and windows. My
files load fine and processing speed is excellent.

may i ask if the current owners can tell me if the dv5t box/carton contains the Anytime upgrade disk from Vista? i was under the impression that it should and does.
thx for the clarification. -
