Maybe, I ordered from the normal home n office and used the 5% coupon.
btw, my dv7t's estimated to arrive on Friday (my birthday), which is 4 days before estimated ship time! It's like a present to myself. :D

Cant help with 2 and 3
But about 1 . Dont use the 5% coupon
use the code NB6997 and get $400 off on ur laptop , but do use this under home and home office and not under APP . I saved approx $225 using this .

    1. yes but $400 is much better
    2. better than if it was discrete graphics.
    3. its purely cosmetic so don't skip on cpu just for it. I ordered it with mine after seeing it at Best Buy simply because I want my laptop to look as nice as possible.

Infinity is kind of a waste of the money. It really doesn't look much better than the normal screen, I have seen the two side by side, I bought the infinityview with mine but I don't know that I'd do it again.

They actually compare all the possibilities and apply the cheapest option
    so basically its $100 rebate + 5% off or $400 off ...

newayz u can try it if u want

    5% = NB3089
    $400 = NB6997

Excellent review Chaz. I can't imagine a better review. I'm so excited for my laptop. Unfortunately I'll have to lug my massive desktop with me to college for the first week and half till my laptop arrives at home.

I just realized that my order is coming with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - but I only ordered 3 GB RAM. Is that going to be a problem? I also heard that both the 32-bit and 64-bit are on the same disc anyway, but I never confirmed that.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

Try following the Driver Update Guide in our forums, there is a special way to install the drivers (it's safe).

Is there a description of all of these programs that are preinstalled? So I can figure out what I should remove or what may actually come in handy? And once I remove a program is it gone forever?

    Thanks,

I specifically ordered my dv5t for good battery life and low heat. I chose
the 25-watt P8400 and the X4500 IG. It's cool as a cucumber. The fan
is so quiet, I have to put my ear on top of the keyboard to hear it running.
I have yet to hear it spool up for any task I've thrown at it.

If you're not a gamer, like myself, the P8400 and X4500 is a great combo.
My laptop runs super cool and I'm getting a minimum of three hours battery
    life.

I also do a lot of photo editing with CS3 and my dv5t is more than capable
to run this program without a hitch, and that's with "only" 2GB ram. Even
though my configuration may be considered conservative, it's still a very high
    performance machine.

So the only thing that causes this thing to heat up is the dedicated video card? I would have to imagine that if it is not doing intensive work, that card should stay pretty cool too, right? I mean, if I am just running Word or something, the video card shouldn't be heating up.

jm, I ordered this machine to mainly use as a word processor/web surfing device while at work. With that being said, the sometimes gamer in me led me to getting the 512mb Nvidia 9600m GT card, as well as the p8600 processor. Point being, once my computer arrives in a few days, I would be happy to tell you how the heat is when NOT doing intensive work. As soon as it gets shipped here, I will let you know.

Chaz, in his awesome review, said you shouldn't use the laptop on your lap (seems like a contradiction in terms, heh heh). Is there something you can buy to hold the laptop, sort of like the iLap for the MacBook Pro. It is used on your lap and helps dissipate heat.

Thanks Jama. I don't play many games either. Tiger Woods 2008 is my favorite -- but I heard that game needs a dedicated video card; that is why I got one.

But I would like the machine to stay cool when I am just running IE or Outlook or Word or something. Maybe I won't turn on Aero in Vista or something.

A question for everyone, what should I do with the memory. A lot of folks seem to be buying the 55 dollar (after rebate) 4 gig OCZ set from newegg, but that memory is pc2 6400. Yet, apparently the Dv5t is shipping with pc2 8000 I believe (something like that?). Should I get 2 gigs of the 8000...or 4 gigs of 6400? Any advice on this matter would be appreciated, especially considering I got Vista 64 bit.

Best material I've seen is masonite. I'm having a piece made for me
that will have rounded corners and multiple cooling slots. It will also
fit in the case, beneath the dv5t. If you can't find a table or bench,
place the masonite support on your lap, and you're good to go, without
having to worry about blocked air-flow.

The video card (9600) actually downclocks itself to about a quarter of what it usually does, which reduces the heat significantly. Right now, my dv5t has been on for several hours but I haven't gamed. It is warm on the surface . . . but not alarming, not even close. You won't have any heat problems doing regular tasks.

Thanks for the compliments about the review. :) I hope you enjoyed the style it was written in too . . . more of a user perspective.

    PC2-6400 = 800MHz
    PC2-8000 = 1000MHz

    ;)

800MHz DDR2 is the fastest the dv5t can use. The $57 (AR) OCZ kit is a great deal.

The new chipset should support 8GB unless HP did something in the bios to limit it.

From this thread, it would appear that the SODIMMs that come with the dv5t are PC2 6400 (800MHz):

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=273378

Actually, looking around I haven't been able to find any PC2 8000 SODIMM ram. It's all over the place for destktops, just not for laptops.

i've got this weird noise problem with my new dv5t o_O..
but first i wanna say i'm really impressed with these forums, a really great place with proffesional ppl who know a lot about copmuters :)
    and now for my thingy..
i've got my dv5t a few days ago. ordered one with p8600 and 9600gt. i'm very happy with it as it is very nice and powerful. i do have one weird problem though. i keep hearing a weird, disturbing (in my opinion) sound. the sound is almost unhearable, and it sounds like a buzz in a high frequency, but now when i hear it it makes me crazy. i figured the sound comes from the bottom left corner of the computer, because i can hear it pretty loudly when i put my ear on that corner. i'm not sure if it comes from the fan or from an electronic device of some sort, because it sounds very much like the sound of electricity. i just wanted to know if other ppl have that sound, or it's just my notebook. i also am not sure whether the sound was there when i got the computer, but i cannot think of any praticular reason for it to appear (nothing happened to the notebook). anyone? i really want to know whether i should return my computer or it's a normal behavior, and if it is, is there any way to make it dissappear? tnx a lot..

btw, i've seen some ppl have submited their 3dmark06 results. if someone is interested, i got 4499 on 1280*800.. that's about the only benchmark i've ran :)

If I do delete something how can I get it back? I made the recovery discs at the beginning so do I need to do something with those or is it gone forever?

I guess what I really need to know is which of all of this preinstalled assets are actually assets or just "junk".

1680x1050( non-Infinity). It's decent for Photoshop work, but a far
cry from my NEC S-IPS panel monitor. But that's to be expected, since
the NEC costs more than the dv5t :)

I hear the dv5t can support up to 8gb ram, however at the moment getting two 4gb sticks isn't really a justifiable cost and that newegg deal is incredibly cheap for getting 4gb (should be more than enough for now anyways too).

    Hi Chaz,

If you have retail copy of Visat Business ... why even bother with recovery disks ... doesn't HP send out the Drivers at least on a disc?

    Thanks,

Its still advisable to burn the recovery discs just in case if ever you need to send the laptop in for service or sell the laptop. HP doesnt include any DVD's with the system, you can however buy them later on for a price.

It might be your fingerprint reader acting up...if you have one that is. If you do, try restalling the driver again. A few others have posted similar problems. If you don't have a fingerprint reader then I have no idea.

firstly, tnx for the fast reply :)
but unfortunately i dont have the fingerprint reader ):
the sound is only disturbing in a very queit room, when there are no buzzes from an air conditioner or smt like that. i'll state that the sound is solid and is not the high frequency sound the processor makes from time to time.

hi jonB: Congrats, first of all!

i wonder if those folks who live on the east coast would wait a couple of days longer due to the extra distance to be traveled from Shanghai China? The several people who gave detailed delivery info are from the west coast or Arizona.

I'm on my desktop right now otherwise I'd let you know for sure.
Hm. It could be electricity running around inside the computer . . . in which case, it would be something you would have to deal with.

Is the laptop's battery charging when it is making that noise? My cell phone charger makes a high-pitched noise when it is charging the phone.
Nice guide, I checked it out. That's a handy list of 'things to do when you get a new notebook'. Especially an HP.

i guess i would have to deal with it, but i wanna know if it's only my notebook that does that. if it isn't, i can still reorder it. the laptop is doing this noise even when not connected to the power adapter, though the sound is quite similar to the sound you've mentioned.

Does anyone know if the $400 coupon code still works?
