Just finished the clean install of my dv5tt
Everything works and is looking good. I can say goodbye to those annoying startups

Does anyone have a list of drivers that they updated to or know work well? I updated my drivers from the SWsetup folder but im not sure they are the most updated ones. I looked at the hp site drivers but I am confused as to which ones to add...

    Yes it does:
    http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/wireless_n/overview.htm
It is not the same as the 5100 - it's actually superior since it has one more antenna (4 vs. 3 - stronger signal strength).
    Congrats!

Those noises are normal when you eject the optical drive. Even my dv5t's DVD burner does that.

I'd call CS to find out the answer to your second question. I do know that HP has a 21-day no-questions-asked return policy with no restocking fee.
I'd go for 32-bit . . . it will be the most compatible.

Maybe I missed it, but did anyone else try the game Ashley is trying to play?

A dedicated video card is only going to come in handy if you play 3D games. Otherwise, it's not worth getting.
    Yes, you can do that.
    Here's a list of what I installed:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3786004#post3786004
Note that I have the generic standard wireless card and not the Intel upgraded one.

    How about for video encoding?

I got the 9200 GS, but if I don't need it seeing as the last game I bought was Star Wars battlefront 2, I might drop down to the integrate video graphics but up the resolution

Will getting the 9200 video not be good for me? I mean, if I want to do an even exchange I have to bump my config up to $1299.. so I could get the 32-bit with 3gb RAM (with no hopes of upgrade..which is fine).... to bump it perfectly to what I had before (1303..before coupon) I can choose the 9200.

My only other option is to forget my $400 coupon (which they honor through my exchange) and use the 30% one and get all the same above.. but with x4500 graphics card.
With x4500 card price is: $884.93
With 9200 card price is: 949.19 total and she would send it 2-day shipping 4 free. .. difference of 64.26 to get dedicated card

Thanks for helping me.. I really do appreciate your time. And thanks for the 30% coupon info Flopakq
*btw* HP sales has been awesome..

Mine arrived today. I think I ordered on the 17th, so it came quick!

I'm going to let the battery charge before I turn it on. What are the advantages/disadvantages of registering it?

Bluetooth Indicator (top right of keyboard, Blue Icon, just above the Altec Lansing Name and Logo by the speakers):

hi all: my Bluetooth indicator light does NOT turn off!!

i selected the "control wireless independently" so i can turn wifi on or off and bluetooth on or off INDEPENDENTLY.
BUT, the bluetooth light / indicator remains bright blue and lit.

i wonder if a reboot would change that and allow it to go on or off depending on the actual "on/off" of the bluetooth internal device?

anyone else with a similar experience?

    thx.

I believe you are refering to the wireless indicator. It only turns off when you turn off the wireless card. There is no separate light for the bluetooth that I am aware of.

I am happy with my build specs. Here are my specs and why:

    - HP Pavilion dv5t Entertainment Notebook= because like newest technology ;)
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit) = (most compatable)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz) = Increase cache / performance over p8600 at only 35W!
    - 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800) = Practical resolution in today's games for geforce 9600m ddr2 version, so best to play at monitor's default resolution. SXGA+ would be a better choice for non-gaming applications.
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)= max usable for vista 32-bit
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT = Fairly fast, but not unreasonably hot like 256bit bus cards.
    - FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection= larger capacity helps for quick file swap in games
    - Webcam + Fingerprint Reader= secure computer w/quick access
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard=default
    - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)=for real centrino2 support, and bluetooth 2.0 is sweet!
    - No High speed 56K modem port= Why have a modem? ;)
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support= Cheapest. Want a Blu-ray RW drive, not just a Blu-ray player. Will upgrade drive when prices drop.
    - HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner = Nice feature integrated. Not lame like express card tuners which stick 3/4" out from the computer.
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery= Waiting for 12 cell to become available.
-No Notebook cooler= Not necessary with the DV5T due to the 9600m-gt being 128bit bus, only minor heat which must be expected with any decent gaming card during play.

Oops...thx for responding. i was a bit of an alarmist because i thought i was really 'smart' in turning off bluetooth as i'm not using it currently (though i have not even tested it with a bluetooth mouse yet, which i really ought to do as one should test ALL hardware when you get the laptop just in case and not let the 21-day return period run out.

BUT, i now see my error based on jmFightSpam's reply: it is a WIRELESS indicator, not a bluetooth indicator!! Yes, it is a blue LED, but it is NOT the bluetooth logo, instead, it is a wireless logo.

i apologize for a blond moment, even though i'm not blond. sorry for the bad joke but i thought it was funny when my blond friend said it yesterday. ;) No offense to anyone who is blond. i apologize in advance if i offended anyone.

I got a question and have a topic but I thought I would give it a go on here. Its hard to get questions answered on here sometimes because of the speed. Here you go, my gf just got a new dv5 and i''m about to as well, she purchased the norton for three years and I saw it saying that it will work on up to three other computers, i don't need to purchase it for myself right? I just can use one of her giveaways? Please don't tell me that it sucks, I Just want to know. I know there are probably better things and maybe stuff thats free but I would like to know that this option is open to me. THANKS.

    NP 2096 vs dv5t temps:

I currently have a Sager NP2096 with a 9600 gt. The temp fluctuates between 60 C and 67 C while i am surfing the web and hits 95 C while playing games. This seems really high based on the cooling thread on this site, which states that its dangerous for the gpu to reach temps between 90 C and 95 C.

I have the notebook sitting on my dinning room table and the room temp is stable at 26 C.

What temps are you guys getting with the 9600 gt while surfing the web and doing simple word processing? I know that some of you have hit the 90s while gaming, but no one has mentioned their idle temps.

I am planning on returning the Sager and purchasing a dv5t. Atleast with the dv5t I can return it without paying shipping, unlike the Sager, which will cost me around $40 or $50 to return.

Looks like I'm going to exchange this one for one with a 1600x1050 resolution.

Its just too hard to get used to scrolling so much on websites(ESPN.com on my T61p I can read without even scrolling, but I only see half the articles on the dv5t)

I'll see if they honor the coupon or I can just reorder using the 30% coupon

    Greets All!

I've been following along off and on since page 150 or so, got me a dv5t for my troubles :D

I ordered with the small-ish HDD, and now I'm looking to step up. Anyone have instructions (pics = awesome) for removing/installing a HDD from a dv5t or other HP model that uses a similar mounting scheme?

Also, anyone got a thread started about running XP on a dv5t as of yet? I'm just crazy enough to give it a shot with a dual boot setup on the new HDD :p

    Great forums! Thanks all!

Video encoding doesn't use the video card; the processor handles that.

I would get the Nvidia dedicated card if you plan on playing any standalone 3D games. Even if the Intel integrated X4500 has the performance to play it (doubtful), you may run into driver/compatibility issues.

The issue you ran into, Ashley, is Macromedia-related though. The video card isn't important for that game.
I'd go for the dedicated card if you want to play 3D games. Otherwise . . . maybe get more RAM or a bigger hard drive.
Ouch! I didn't realize the Sager ran that hot. 90 - 95*C is hot, yes, but not dangerous. I recommend getting a notebook cooler.

My 9600M-GT idles around 49 - 59*C, depending on the ambient room temperature, while surfing (with PowerMizer enabled). Gaming makes the GPU reach ~95*C, like your Sager, though raising the back of the notebook up 1/2" drops the temps by ~10*C. No one has reported any actual overheating problems with the dv5t yet.
    Welcome to the forums. :)

This PDF document details how to replace the hard drive:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01492698.pdf
    Pics included.

    I'd recommend a 320GB Western Digital Scorpio 7200RPM Black hard drive . . . excellent quality, and it's fast.

Chaz thank you so much for responding.

I should have been more clear. When I hit 95 C, the notebook was sitting on a Balkin notebook cooler. I didn't want to try it without the cooler. Though at idle the cooler did not make a difference.

I am thinking of getting the dv5t or perhaps the dv5z without the graphics card since my wife will be the primary user of the notebook (I will just upgrade my desktop gpu for gaming). But i also feel very tempted to try the dv5t with the 9600 gt, especially since i can return it for free.

Sometimes it really sucks to be a gamer. I just can't seem to pass up the opportunity to install the best gpu i can afford even though i may not be the primary user of the computer!!!

I am a total noob when it comes to notebooks. I don't want to have to deal with problems that may develop in the future, especially since this is the third issue with my Sager and i have only had it for about 2 weeks.

Also since the hp's are cheaper isn't helping me keep the Sager either.

edit: raising the back of the sager did not help while surfing web.

    Hey all,

What does your fan sound like? When I put my ear to the upper left corner, I hear the fan and it sounds sort of like a mild grind. Not very loud or very disturbing, but definitely a noise. Just want to make sure that is normal.

    Thanks.

Well.. more than 3gb.. 32-bit wouldn't recognize right.. would it make sense for me to get the t9400 ? that would bring me up to the right amount..

I'm sticking with the x4500 then if the 9200 video card won't help playing dvd's..that kind of stuff..

I think I'm gonna stick with the 8400 and use the 30% coupon (which does work btw).. . going to get a 2-year warranty instead.. the 30% works towards that too

    Chaz,

Thanks for the lightning quick response! Looks like I just needed to apply force in the right direction for the hard drive removal.

Good to see the dv5t supports the SATA 3.0Gb/s, however, it does not make my choice any easier :D

The WD Scorpio Black you recommended looks like some serious hardware. WD claims 5v 500mA while the stock 5400 Hitachi claims 5v 700mA (as printed on the drive.) Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems like not only a speed increase but power savings as well! Too bad the Egg doesn't sell the BJKT series drives

Ouch! I'd return it if it's getting that hot. 95*C is insane with a notebook cooler. The dv5t gets less than 80*C with a Zalman NC1000 notebook cooler.

The reason raising the back of the dv5t up helps is because the air expelled by its cooling system is deflected downards at an angle - it's not going away horizontally, and therefore not going away as fast as possible. Raising the back up eliminates this issue.
The WD 320GB 7200RPM is very good on power, yes.

Newegg does sell the Black ;):
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280
The hard drive replacement in most notebooks is a breeze.

WD makes the best quality drives on the market in my experience. I have four of their drives in my desktop, one in an external enclosure (four years old), and one in an old desktop from 2003 (still running).
Yeah, I think the T9400 would be your best bet if you want to use the coupon. The processor is one of the components you won't be upgrading later on. Nobody ever complained about too much CPU power.
I just listened to mine - I can't hear anything but a faint rush of air. I put my ear right up to it.

Maybe it's just a noise the fan is making at startup?

The dv5t dosent come with any cd's. YOu have to create them. So you will need your own vista disc for clean install. The ones you create have all the crapware that hp includes.

so i was very excited as my dv5t came today but when i was installing vista it stopped on a blank screen.

so i forced shut it down and now vista won't load at all.

every time the computer gets to loading windows files, then the Microsoft corporation screen. finally it gets stuck on a blue screen (not that blue screen)

the hard drive light indicates the drive is working but i leave it there for 30 min still nothing.
and i hear it working but it is the same hard drive sounds repeating over and over.

then i push f11 and try for the recovery, same thing
    blue screen

i try safe mode, nothing works.
    please help.

Have you checked the HP site lately?

HP now offers what appears to be full OS disks:

"Feel at ease with an OS backup CD at your fingertips. Please choose the same OS as selected above."

It sounds like the hard drive might be bad. I'd call HP tech support and arrange for an RMA . . . :(

For now, you can use a Linux Live CD. More info on that in our Linux forum:

Thanks Chaz. Nah, the computer has been on for over two hours. The computer is surprisingly cool on my iLap RainDesign, so it is not working overtime. But I definitely hear something more than just air coming out of the fan. It is grinding just a tad.

Can you move your computer around a little bit while the fan is running or lift it up and down off of the stand and see if the fan noise is changing?

Others, what does your fan sound like when you put your ear real close?

    Thanks.

Does anyone know why the fan doesn't power down when I unplug my notebook from the AC? The temperatures are cool (32C CPU and 45C GPU.) I don't know if I had this problem when I got my notebook because I never used the battery until today. The fan is spinning at the same speed when it's on AC power as when I'm using the battery. I think this kills battery life, but I haven't measured it yet. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

The BIOS has it where the fan always runs. You can change it in the BIOS.

And now if I may ask you a question -- when you put your ear close to the fan in the upper left corner, do you hear a quiet, but mild, grinding as the fan is running?

    Quickplay button questions:

    1) I can't seem to touch control the wireless button. It's blue all the time, and doesn't shut off the wireless or bluetooth. Could it be a quickplay driver issue?

    2) Can bluetooth and wifi be turned on and off independently of each other (I doubt I will need to, but just in case I want to)?

    3) I can control volume from quickplay while playing games like Far Cry. Is that supposed to happen, or again, a driver issue?

    4) Anyone undervolt this yet (or any other P series processors)?

Bluetooth and Wifi can be either turned on/off together or independently. Please right click on the wireless icon in the tray, that opens up the HP Wireless Assistant. That page shows the Wireless LAN as well as the Bluetooth. You will see options to either turn both on/off together or separately. Once you set them to turn on/off separately, you will see new buttons next to each one so you can switch them on and off separately with ease.

you will also now (after you set them to separately turn on and off) be able to simply right click on the wireless tray icon now, and see new options: i.e. turn them on/off separately, or a "master" turn ALL on or turn ALL off.

    hope this helps.

    1) I seem to be having a similar issue with my mute button, seems to stay orange all the time (or whatever color it is, i'm color blind).

    2) ^

    3) It's supposed to, why wouldn't you be able to?

    4) I tried, no success. My temps actually rose about 9C under stress, from 81C to 90C. I decided to just give up. You can try, I don't know what might have gone with mine. I was told my x9 Multiplier was high, 1.750v. My processor is a T9400 (2.53GHz).

im getting the same problems. I can turn wifi/bluetooth on and off and the touch button turns blue to orange.

Also the volume slider works as well with the clicks and the volume changes. However the mute button doesnt completely work. Yes, it turns the mute on and off, but it always remains orange.

Also my Quicklplay button does not work.

I am a little irked at vista right now. On idle it is still running at 36% physical memory after a clean install. The memory usage is around 1.5gb. I have some anti-virus antirootkit programs that are running in the backgroun such as AVG and spybot. I noticed that spybot alone is taking up over 40mb memory, which is even more than firefox.... Also, logitech/bluetooth are running over 5 processes because i have a bluetooth wireless mouse. Is this correct? Does it rly take 5 processes to correctly run my mouse or some of them unneccessary and able to be turned off without any effects.
    Plz help

    3) I meant I CAN'T control the volume from inside games with the quickplay buttons. My mistake.

I think I know what you're talking about . . . it's like a high-pitched noise, right? A few members brought this up before - that sound is actually just electricity running through the machine, not anything grinding against the fan.
On the positive side, at least you don't have to send your whole notebook in.

You can still enjoy your machine by using a Linux Live CD. ;)

Well, I've been lurking here off and on for like 3 weeks now. I finally decided to just go ahead and order my dv5t. It's cheaper than the MSI 1651, and I'm honestly not going to use the 9600GTM. I'm glad I didn't order it last week, I wound up saving another $60 with the 30% off!

    Here's what I ordered:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz)
    15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    Webcam Only
    Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Thanks for all the helpful posts. I would have otherwise bought the P8600 or faster and 32bit Vista!

Hi, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna ditch the infinity display, I just want to make sure the regular display isn't brittle where the plastic meets the glass. (ie. can you stick your fingernail under the plastic and lift it?)
I couldn't quite get an idea from the cooler pictures...
    thanks

Excellent pictures. I'm hoping to get a cooler as soon as I can get the money. All my friends tell me that they got a cooler for 20 or so from random retailers. I keep telling them I want mine to actually work.
