To reduce confusion between the original first generation dv5t, this thread has been created for all past, present, and future owners of the new and revived dv5t (2nd generation dv5t, 2010 model) notebook.

New features include: island-style keyboard, 14.5" screen, streamlined finishes.

Here are some resources for those who want to know more and get started:

Great idea to split the thread up but the new dv5t doesn't have ATI graphics or metallic finishes

Did no one buy this laptop or is it just that no one uses this lounge? I was going to do research on this but..eh...

edit: I mean it seems like a very good laptop, it looks very nice too. It has nearly everything the other pavillions have, except for graphics card. Is this why people arent talking much about this 2nd gen laptop? Most people here are gamers?

I actually thought about this laptop when it was first available at various places like Costco Canada, Best Buy Canada and Tiger Direct. The only reason was its size. I saw some at stores and really liked it.

The thing that discouraged me from buying it was not having graphical dedicated memory.

I think the dv5 is just being overshadowed by the dv6. For a while, it seemed the only "15" you could get is a 15.6-inch model, which were the dv6 models. I think it will be a while before the dv5 will get some more attention.

The dv5-2000 also seems to be overshadowed by the Envy 14, which shares the same 14.5" size. The Envy 14 is a very popular laptop right now as evidenced by the owners lounge (now going on the second one!). The premium specifications that it offers are something that more users (at least here on NBR) go for, and provide a better bang for the buck.

    hey guys,

anyone have any idea about how to go about replacing a standard keyboard on the dv5-2070us and replacing it with a backlit keyboard?

i'm open to any suggestions: either professional or doing it myself. Let me know.

*** Edit, These keyboard and regular part numbers are for a DV6se keyboard. I would assume the keyboards are the same.

You can get one off HP Partsurfer but its about 110$. The part number for the keyboard backlit is 597630-001 -- Theres no guarantee it will work since it is said the backlit keyboard requires a special connector ontop of the basic keyboard cable.

To replace the a keyboard on an HP is simple, remove all bottom covers, remove 3 screws snap the keyboard out (dont force it) then unplug the ribbon connectors.

The website to obtain it is HP PartSurfer

I got my dv5 on Sep 14th. I just installed the latest Intel HD drivers from Windows Update (Driver dated 7/28/10. Previous was 6/15/10), and my Windows Experience Index scores for the video card went up:

    Graphics: From 4.5 to 4.6
Gaming Graphics: From 4.9 to 5.2

Just an fyi, that whatever this update did looks to be a good thing.

Does anyone know if it is possible to order a backlit keyboard and install it in one that did not come with it. I know bestbuy has a version for $799 with a backlit keyboard, and a version for $599 without.

So who has the best prices right now on these dv5s? I think they're one of the best looking (black cherry) to me but not sure if I want to spend $800+ on one, even w/a i5 CPU.. I'd actually rather buy instore for return purposes (no time to deal w/shipping) but best buy is higher than using HP direct even with only a $130 instant and $25 addition coupon code...It's about a $50 difference after taxes...

Any upcoming specials to be had that anyone's aware of? I'm thinking it's about time to retire the zv6130...

Ok, I'm looking at a DV5t w/the core i5, 500gb 7200 hdd, backlit keyboard and standard everything else for about $780 before taxes and standard free long wait shipping...

For those in the know, since it's nearly the middle of October, does the HP online store tend to give better discounts or offer better coupons later in the year?

I went to Best Buy today and briefly (couldn't stand being there after hearing the salesKID tell some women that the i3 was a quad core!) played w/the DV5 2135. I actually like the chiclet keyboard but for about the same price, I THINK I'm going w/the Probook in 14-16" size. If only the Probook had a backlit keyboard!!!

I just don't like the metal stream etching on the dv6, otherwise it would be a contender...

Has the DV5 become a downmarket version of the DM4? Why so few user generated comments? It seems as if the DV5-2xxx shares the same screen and general form factor with the DM4 and Envy 14?

Just guessing, but as the new DV5t is the only 14" DV series notebook left, perhaps its being held over until all the Nvidia litigation exchanges are complete. My sister-in-law just got her notice for her broken DV2000z from HP and is wondering what HP will replace it with?

Anyway.... if any of you folks have a DV5t with a lighted keyboard... quick question? Can you turn the keyboard light function on & off? How?

    Thanks....

Mine should ship from HP on 12/15...couldn't pass up $400 off coupon...

Champagne finish with some i7-640m goodness, blu ray player and backlit keyboard...

Already have the memory to upgrade her to 8GB along with a 120GB SSD...

    I can't wait...

Doesn't the DV5T have integrated graphics? I would think that even with an i7 processor and 8GB of RAM, the limiting factor would be the integrated graphics?

On the plus side, the DV5T appears to have exactly the same screen as the Envy 14 and very nearly the same battery capacity?

Yeah, no option for discreet GPU...the one thing that kept me from getting a dv5. Otherwise, a great product...

    Hey dv5t Gen 2 owners,

Just letting everyone here know that a new BIOS release is now available, version F.23. HP is designating this as a recommended update.

You can grab this new update at http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-dm4-dv5-gen-2-g32-cq32-envy-14-intel.html.

Sorry I can't help you with your question.... but since you are here I was wondering if you have a lighted keyboard and if it can be turned off/on. Am considering one of these units and was just wondering about the keyboard.

Thanks, and if you don't get any direct user feedback for your question perhaps you could visit a brick & mortar to do a comparison. Perhaps I should do the same ; )

The backlit keyboard can be turned off using the Function key and the key in the upper right next to the one that turns WiFi antennae off/on...

Sadly, I am returning mine to HP...I cannot get used to this touchpad. It jumps everywhere when I use it.

I have adjusted all of the settings and it is definitely much better than out of the box, but it is still not usable for me.

I guess it is kind of a blessing because those new Sandy Bridge ones are looking very nice. Hope a good coupon or deals comes along soon.

Thanks.... good info about the keyboard backlight. I wonder if the touchpad issue is common to all DV5's or if you just got one that is defective? Hmmm...

    Any other user thoughts?

    I've had a dv5 for a year now (since 7/2010)
I recently had to send it back for repairs b4 the warranty ran out
and its being repaired right now (some pins on the Ethernet jack were missing)

but so far my experience with it has been great
actually the only reason I really ordered it was for the 14.5 inch screen
    ($600+ for a pentium and 320gb :()
which sadly doesn't seem to be catching on with other manufactures, there
were rumors that asus was making a 14.5 inch but it ended up being a 14"

As for the low count on this thread I guess it makes sense what with the envy 14 and all, but I have seen several dv5 models (at best buy) that have a dedicated AMD chip in them, (weill kinda..) they have AMD cpu's with AMD's version of integrated cards so i guess its not too different from intel's

did anyone else but the dv5 just for the screen size?
