After being disappointed by my experience with the terrible quality control of the Dell XPS m1530 (great laptop, just poorly assembled), I decided to look at the HP dv5t as a replacement. After doing some research, I've found that the two main issues with this computer seem to be: 1) heat, and 2) poor battery life, both of which I can deal with (I don't carry around my laptop that much, and the heat from the m1530 which is supposed to be comparable never bothered me).

My question is, are there any major issues with this notebook that I have overlooked? Are there any build quality issues, high failure rates, or screen problems (i.e. back light bleed, or graininess)? I don't want to make the same mistake twice of ignoring the red flags before purchasing a notebook, so any help would be appreciated :) !

well got a dv7, but IMO i think it's well built, although if you let it fall i don't think it would be good for that machine :p

The screen i have WXGA+ ( the highhest in the netherlands) is fine nice backlight

Heat and battery life are going to be directly correlated to the components you choose for your system.

Heat is only an issue when gaming, and is easily dealt with using a cooling pad. Battery life can be an issue depending on what apps you are running. Neither of these issues have adversely affected my experience with the dv5t and I haven't heard of any other major issues.

To be honest, the dv5t line is really only 3 months old, so its hard to gauge whether there are major issues that require recalls or extended warranties like other HP models.

Having said that, and also owning a Lenovo T60p, the HP is a consumer level laptop that still feels very solid and a screen to die for (if you get the wxga+ with infinity you will know what I mean). Plus, in these tough times, the technology that HP offers for the dollar is bar none.

The only draw back is that it is a little thicker than I would have liked because the TP are very well built. Aside from the little minor things(such as misaligned speaker grills and keyboard noise that some folks have posted about)

All in all, a great value (if you want more, then you'll have to pay more, like for an Lenovo).

The two shortcomings can be addressed with a hardware solution(cooler and the much anticipated extended battery)
