AMD has nothing to say about it, as they leave final configurations up to their channel partners' sole discretion. The HD3200 was also created to ulilize it's own dedicated ram like a discrete gpu, but HP declined to use this feature as well.
I will agree that AMD gets shafted over this, but the suits make all of the decisions in the end (for good or bad)......

Has anyone installed the new F.08 bios? Any differences?
-
Yeah, there isn't much AMD can do about what its customers do with their product. They've made their money by selling a product that another manufacturer will resell in a different package. It's a shame that companies like HP will do this sort of nonsense though. Sometimes it seems like computer manufacturers buy just enough from AMD to keep Intel competitive so their prices will remain lower. -
I have several questions for those who have had their dv5zs longer than me. One, what type of ram is in this laptop, 667 or 800. Secondly, does the volume bar above the keyboard on your laptops ever change? Mine always appears full even if I raise/lower the volume.
-
-
That option was available in F.05 as well as I recall.
-
the volume bar does not appear on screen on mine, its most likely because i am running vista x64

I installed the new BIOS, and it doesn't appear on my screen either. I'm running Vista 32 bit.
Oh well - Its not important to me in the least -
The volume bar on the screen actually gets annoying since it takes up a big portion of the screen. They didn't just tuck it in a corner unfortunately.

Is that Youcam software the laptop came with good or should I find a better program for it? -

Let me open this appeal up to all of you dv5z owners: please, I need one or two of you with HD3200 and HD3450 to volunteer to send me a copy of your DSDT so I can compare it with mine (I have the HD3450).
In Windows you can get it just by running regedit, and exporting one key.
Run regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE
Select ACPI, right click, choose Export, save to a file named "ACPI.reg"
I think if I get two HD3200 copies and one HD3450 copy that should be enough to work with. Post here if you're willing to help, and I'll PM you so you can email me your copy. -

So, I have a beef now with the limited BIOS options, I believe this is preventing me to turn off some SATA setting so XP will install....
Can someone or all of us come together and figure out a way to install XP on this machine?
Please help. I have tried XP64, XP Pro SP3, and after installing BIOS v 8 still get a blue screen when the text mode goes into "starting windows", next screen would normally be the pick partition and format page. Anyone? -
Just received my dv5z today. It looks really nice and well put together. Vista 64bit with 2GB is dog slow.... took about 30 minutes to get to a point were I could do something. Ridiculous, but more Microsoft's fault then the laptops'.
One question for other owners. The power supply puts out a noticeable hum. I've compared it with another HP power supply I have for an older dv series laptop and the dv5z's is much louder. Do others notice the same thing or do I have a faulty power supply? -
For all of you that have done the clean install, does the fingerprint reader work for ya? Vista doesn't want to recognize it for me

Hi I am new to this thread and am thinking of buying a dv5z. I currently have a dv5t and am going to return it as it gets WAY too hot. My question is does the dv5z have any similiar heat issues with the integrated or dedicated video options?
Thanks in advance for any help. -
I personally think it stays relatively cool. The only time it gets hot is when it isn't being properly ventilated or when High Performance mode is selected. I leave the Fan Always On option turned on in the BIOS though so maybe that's why I don't notice it. Also, I'm using the dedicated video card if that helps for comparison.
-
just to inform ppl.... 2dai i bumped into an ACER laptop with ATi Hybrd Crossfire !!! i found both HD 3200 and HD 3470 in the device manager and Crossfore was enabled in the ATi control panel... it came with an AMD RM-70 (2.0 GHz) and 2 GB RAM... for those who want a lappy with hybrid cross fire should look for it... i believe the model number was 5530...
-
It can get a little toasty when you're playing games, but it's not unbearable. The laptop stays quite cool for everyday tasks though. Just be sure to select the fan always on option in the bios.
-
Hmm, I'm beginning to think the only way I'm going to get hold of more ACPI BIOS tables to compare is by going to a store and getting them from the display models...

I have a HD3450 as well, so I'm betting that your tables will be identical to mine. -
Quick question for those of you that say you installed ATI's 8.8 driver for the laptop.
First of all, ATI doesn't have a driver for the HD 3450 laptop version on their web-site. They SPECIFICALLY mention that. They recommend you use the drivers that your laptop vendor suggests.....in this case I believe HP comes with 8.3 or something along those lines.
You CAN install the 8.8 SOFTWARE manager, aka catalyst, but, as far as I know, not the DRIVERS.
If I am wrong, can you go into your device manager and double check that you actually installed the DRIVERS, not the software?
.
This laptop is wonderful, especially once I did a complete clean install and made a back-up image of my hard drive -
I had to use ATI Mobility Modder to get the 8.8 drivers to install. They won't install otherwise. On mine, it won't even install the new catalyst control center.

Looks like Acer is actually utilizing the benefits of the platform. For those of you hoping for crossfire from HP, just remember that the features of the platform (PUMA) are at the manufacturers discretion. We went through this with the ZV6000/R4000 series and the issue of dual channel memory. HP simply did not have the board manufactured with all the features. SO - for those of you waiting for the real puma features, Acer seems to be the first one out of the blocks. The question now is, when will we see PUMA with XGP? Fujitsu perhaps? -
so i'm looking into getting a nice budget notebook for my sister who is a grad student and has never had a notebook pc before. It seems like everyone in this thread are pretty computer savy, but my sister isn't really and just needs a nice notebook that she can use for school and listen to music and watch movies
These are the configurations that i decided on:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
AMD Athlon(TM) X2 Dual-Core Processor for Notebook PCs QL-60 (1.9GHz)
15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!!
ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics
FREE Upgrade to 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Webcam Only
HP Color Matching Keyboard
802.11b/g WLAN
No Modem
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
No TV Tuner w/remote control
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
Norton 360(TM) - 15 Months
do any of you guys have recommendations on the configurations or do you know of any other nice budget notebook that i could recommend for my sister?
Thanks in advance!! -
I just was reading specs for the turion RM-70 and the turion ultra ZM-80 and they're the same.
Turion X2 Ultra ZM-80 Puma 3600 2048 2100 32
Turion X2 RM-70 Puma 3600 2048 2000 31
The turion is a updated version of the old TL-60.
So the only difference is the ultra is 2.1ghz and the turion is 2.0. The FSB and L2 Cache are the same. Only difference is the clock speed and TDP. So i was wondering waste a extra 50 bucks for nothing? -
My hp originally came with 2gb of ran and according to cpu-z the command rate was 1T. I recently put 4gb of G skill in there but now the command rate has gone up to 2T.
I haven't checked the bios but Im pretty sure it lacks that option. Anyone know any other way to change it back to 1T.
any help would be greatly appreciated. -

Then gives a chart for the RM-70 having 2048mb l2 cache.
Wikipedia has a different story,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Turion_microprocessors
Says 2 x 512 KB for the RM-70
So someone with a rm-70 go grab cpu-z and debunk the rumors. -

straight from AMD: 2MB cache total on all of the ultras at this point, so 2 x 1024 KB
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_12651_15667^15674,00.html -
CPU-z says 2x512kb as most people are saying for the RM-70.
-
yep that should be right, 2MB for ultra and 1 for non-ultra turions.

Definitely at the low range. It ranges slightly above the minimum requirments.
-
I gotta say, the 3450 is actually relatively powerful for a low end car. CoD4, with a slight resolution reduction, is flawless at max settings. And for some reason, the 1280x800 screen doesn't look wrong or stretched like most LCD screens I've seen do at non-native resolutions.
