Well fellas, I gave up on waiting to find out if Crossfire works on this laptop. I bought a Sony VAIO FW instead.

    Why?
    1. Faster processor
    2. Likely better battery life
    3. Faster graphics assuming Crossfire doesn't work, and even then, I don't think Crossfire would be faster. Maybe on par.
    4. Price is a bit more, but the Sony has "style"!
    5. I couldn't wait any longer; I needed the laptop now.

I am sad to be giving up on AMD for this purcahse, but the manufacturers (HP) did a **** poor job on exploiting the benefits of the Puma platform.

It'll do all of that just fine, but given a choice I'd spend a little more for the Turion Ultra "just because".

Answering other posts: HP should eventually post a service guide documenting how to disassemble the notebook, and if a dedicated GPU can be added later the service guide will document that but for now I'd assume that you can't.

Anyone happen to have Avira antivirus installed? I do and it's picking up a program in the HP Games folder as a virus. It's Paradise Pet Salon and it's tagging it as TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen (trojan). Things are just weird right now, I'm assuming its really not but I'm moving it to quarantine anyway just to get rid of the message.

I have had this laptop for a week now and while I love it I have a couple questions I thought maybe some of you with more knowledge than I could answer:

Can this laptop do light video editing? Will it work with Pinnacle Studio?

Is it normal for the fans to kick on often? I haven't had a laptop with AMD processor. I know they run hotter. The fan turns on more frequently in this laptop than my Dell. It sounds like it wavers in speed..faster then slower when it kicks in.

I have Vista 32 bit. Should I have bought the laptop with 64 bit and would that make a difference in the processing?

My uses for the laptop are photo editing, light video editing, word processing and web surfing. Thanks to all who respond...I appreciate it..

AmericanGal: yes, your notebook will do all of that just fine. Ideally you should have configured 64-bit Vista for the sake of 4GB RAM support but at this point I wouldn't worry about it, unless you're feeling ambitious and want to do a clean Vista install as described in one of the stickies in this forum.

How is the 3450's performance vs. the 3200? Is it worth the $100 upgrade, even if crossfire is not workable?

EDIT: seems the answer is "no, unless we can get crossfire to work."

ifoundsecrets, are you for real? That would be good news if so, but I haven't found anything on a google search.

Yea I'm "for real", it is great news, and the 3450 is worth the $100 upgrade. ESPECIALLY since crossfire DOES work. I wish people would have open minds, Crossfire can be run logically on this computer, I think it'll take me an hour or two to get it all set up and write up the walkthrough, maybe try to include some screenshots too.

But anyways, since I'm helping all of you, I ask you all do the same. I have a friend who has two clothing lines he's trying to get off the ground. One is called Aesthetic11, and the other is called Zooshirts. Zooshirts supports animal and global conservation and they have really unique shirts and organic apparel. Check them out at www.store.aesthetic11.com , and you can even use coupon code ZOOKEEPER to get free shipping. I'd appreciate it if you helped my friend.

Look forward to my walkthrough on CROSSFIRE ON THE DV5Z BABY.

I called customer service to ask this very question since I would like to keep my 12-cell battery I have with my DV6000. The lady I spoke with was very knowledgeable and helpful, but the short answer to your (and my) question is no. Currently there are only the 6-cell and high capacity 6-cell batteries that are a different design than the DV6000 had. She did mention that you can call the parts number and see if you can trade in your old 12-cell for the high capacity 6-cell, 888-593-3835, 8am-8pm eastern time Monday-Friday. I plan to call Monday as I have my DV5-1004 from Best Buy, but haven't opened it yet...I want to see if any better deals come out tomorrow before opening and wishing I had something different.

Ya think it'll be possible to add on a 3450 at some point through disassembling the laptop?

Going by the past models, I'd have to agree. The only odd thing is that the dv5z CTO lists only one board in Part Surfer, when there should be two (at least). It does not even make any indication whether it is the "dedicated ram" version or not, as they have done in the past. Strange.

Hi guys, I'm new on this forum, and just found this place by searching for the best budget laptop I could find (600-800 value). Ideally, I wanted to spend about 600-700 on the laptop, but for 100 more (I paid 808 all things considered), it was worth getting this model with these options, atleast in my opinion.

I DID want the 250gig HD, but I think the 160gig will be good enough, and in a few months I'll probably get a nice 500gig WD external drive to compliment this laptop.

Here is the build I got:

Your customized HP Pavilion dv5z Entertainment Notebook is estimated to be built by August 12, 2008. The delivery date is determined by the shipping method you chose during checkout.

    Your customized PC includes:

    - HP Pavilion dv5z Entertainment Notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - AMD Turion(TM) X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor RM-70 (2.0GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    - 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 256MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3450 Graphics
    - FREE Upgrade to 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - 802.11b/g WLAN
    - No High speed 56K modem port
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

    1) I can't wait to find an official answer on the crossfire-x situation, because I was totally unaware of Crossfire-X, even while buying the laptop.

    2) I wonder if the Crossfire-X never works on this laptop, if it is worth it to upgrade to the 3450 like I did.....if not I feel stupid and wish I spent the saved money on a bigger HD (250) or just saved money all together

    3) I wonder if my processor choice was a good one. I couldnt really afford to spend the extra 50 for the newer processors.

    4) I accidently selected 32-bit Vista, and I'm wondering, with 3 gigs of ram (not 4) if there will be any noticeable difference in performances ?

This laptop does seem amazing for the price!
I think overall, all things considered, its a wonderful buy!

I hate to be a doubting Thomas, but I think it will be a bit more complicated than going through a simple walkthrough. The IGP would first need to be enabled in the Bios, which you can't do as there are no options to do so. Unless someone was able to write a "hacked" Bios and the notebook could handle the additional power draw & heat, I don't see it happening......

Just got my dv5z today. When I ordered it the 28th they said the estimated build date would be august 6th and I have already gotten it. The only problem is doing a clean install. I read through a bit of the sticky on the HP tab, and the downloads no longer work. Any suggestions?

    Ordered! :)
They dropped the price by about 20-30 dollars overnight, no biggie... I'll just call 'em up.

I got the 3450. I think it will be a decent upgrade in its own right even if Crossfire doesn't work right away. I'm confident someone will eventually figure it out though. Hoping ifoundsecrets has the secret. ;)

Will someone do some gaming with the 3450 and let me know how it does? Im going to be selling my current laptop to my dad and either getting another Dv5z a little more upgraded or the Dv5t because this HD 3200 doesnt game as good as i thought it would. The only game it plays for me is W3 and i also want to run Counterstrike:Source, Guildwars 1 and 2, and Starcraft 2. Im not expecting it to run Farcry2 or anything but those would be the only games i would play not at home.

I ran Civ4 flawlessly, but that is not terribly demanding. I also tried GTA:SA and I ran into some lag there, especially on high res. Since I ran HL2 on pretty high settings with my much weaker previous GPU, I don't think you would have any problems with Source engine games. I'm not sure about SC2 as no system requirements have been released, but Blizzard is known to make games playable on weaker systems.

Somebody here has supposedly found a way to enable it. But until we know for sure, I wouldn't consider it to be workable. If you want to base your purchase decision on whether Crossfire works, I suggest you wait for a few more days. Moreover, hybrid crossfire won't make your system twice as fast. If it does indeed work, you might see somewhere around a 20% gain in performance.

Do you mean dual boot, or single boot? Single boot seems prety straight forward cause all of the drivers can be found for xp. I'm working on installing os x on the dv5z, but im not sure if the new turion ultra will run it

HP's website has all of the drivers for the dv5z, including xp and vista.

Perhaps downloading that "HP Software Update" file after installing XP, the computer will recognize my hardware and download the applicable drivers?

I guess when i was on Hp's website and i was under the vista drivers, and saw the option for xp, i figured they were all there too. The 2.5 is just the HP self updater. They discourage using xp, saying they don't always support drivers, and that parts of the laptop won't work right. If ya do go to xp, you probably won't get the buttons at the top to work (if that's a big deal).
Do you know the wireless chipset that these dv5z's use? I'm only seeing that it's an AR5009. I found a linux driver, but nothing for xp yet

after extensive testing the hd3200 on my tx2500, ive concluded the hd3200 is no faster than a 4 years old ati radeon 9600. pretty pathetic. can't play warcraft 3 at constant 60fps like the radeon 9600. counter strike source average around 30-40fps. outrun cant even maintain a 60fps. after owning an integrated xpress 1100, id say this "new" igp is about 2 times faster than the x1100, which if you know, is nothing to brag about. better crap is still crap. dont get this card and expect to be blown away, you'll be severely disappointed.

Ive come to this same realization, it may be the most powerful IGP out there but dont expect to playing games decently. I would like to know how the 3450 is performing, i would imagine it could play a few games pretty smooth on low/maybe medium settings. Im gonna be ordering another Dv5z, same specs as mine but with the ZM-80 and the 3450, that should be enough to play the games i want decently without breaking the bank to much. This will only cost me $55 more the way im working this out, so why not.

Well it's better than a Intel X3100 right? I just returned my Dell because the video card struggled with Lost. Now, Lost isn't a highly demanding game so I should be fine.
