It comes with the unit. All Pavilions these days include the remote control as std equipment.

    Thank you.

Yeah, I was confused, because during the check out process, the media remote wasn't on the list, and I found it on the accessories for 20 bucks.

Heh, I'm just speculating. :p Who knows how the industry will go in another 13 years though. Software is already starting to become more and more multi-threaded. Pfft...when I think back to thirteen years ago, I thought my Pentium 75 MHz with 4 MB of RAM was screaming. xD I couldn't have imagined what I would need 2-4 GHz of speed for let alone extra cores.

I got my dv5z with 3450 and zm-82 today. HP tech said crossfire should have been enabled by default on the bios. But I cannot see the card on the hardware list. One think, though, when I use Catalyst install manager and examine the install log afterwards, it says that RS780 (probably 3200) is detected on the system, weird:

    Other detected devices:
    RS780
    Manufacturer ATI Technologies Inc
    Device ID 0x9600
    Vendor ID 0x1022
    Class Code 0x060000
    Revision ID 0x00
    Subsystem ID 0x3600
    Subsystem vendor ID 0x103c

    Manufacturer ATI Technologies Inc
    Device ID 0xaa28
    Vendor ID 0x1002
    Class Code 0x040300
    Revision ID 0x00
    Subsystem ID 0x3600
    Subsystem vendor ID 0x103c

I also tried www.driverheaven.net but same. The only thing that comes to mind is a fresh install of windows but i'm not sure on that. BTW, HP didn't send a CD, can we install from the second partition, since there are some recovery directories there?

RS780 is the codename for the M780G Northbridge chipset. The Northbridge controls the higher speed devices like CPU, RAM, integrated video, etc.

The second partition installs everything back to factory settings as they are right now. If you end up wiping everything out and merging the partitions at some point, I would recommend burning your own restore DVDs so you can bring it back to factory settings if you ever want to sell it.

Hmm, then it doesn't look like I'll be able to find a 3200 (or 780G?) on this system  I remember that it's not easy to visually check if this has 3200 without voiding the warranty?

I'm also trying to match the other device id with some hardware with no luck. I'm confused.

Yeah, if nothing is figured out within my one year warranty period, I'm just going to open the thing up and see what's under the hood. I'm tempted to do it now but it would probably be the one time I need to make use of a warranty. :p

    What's the device id say?

OK, I've checked the system and found out that:
chipid 0x9600 is PCI standard host CPU bridge
    chipid 0x95c4 is HD 3450
    chipid 0xaa28 is HD Audio
no trace of any HD 3200. looks like this baby is going back to hp. i'll try hp tech support one more time, though.

Well I believe the hardware is there since it's part of the RS780 chipset. I still believe that when the 3450 is installed, the HD 3200 gets disabled and the 3450 becomes the primary adapter. So since the BIOS is turning it off, you wouldn't see it unless you could open more BIOS options. I've seen the option on desktop systems so I'm fairly certain it is just hiding in the HP BIOS. It would be nice if HP would offer a type of "use at your own risk" BIOS with all of the options available for enthusiasts to take advantage of.

The HD3200 is part of the Northbridge RS780 chip, its just one chip, so they all must have the HD3200, and HP must have disabled it in the BIOS and not allowed you to change it. So should just need a BIOS update. Get enough people asking for it and maybe they will make the bios update.

My 780G desktop works great with the hybrid crossfire, so it would be an awesome thing for this laptop. I can see both the HD3200 and my 3470 in the device manager.

I have the 3450. at first I thought i made a mistake, based on the posts i saw in this thread - but after some research , it was worth the extra 100 bux for this GPU. why? because in the long run - even a minor performance advantage is worth it. a 100 bux isnt THAT much extra for a GPU thats faster (even if not a WHOLE lot) and has 256 dedicated mb ram

I just got my new dv5z. I noted a difference from the power supply from my dv6000. The dv6000 uses a 90w ps and the dv5z uses a 65w ps with a different plug. I was hoping to use the spare ps I already had but they are NOT interchangeable. Is this because of the different platforms? Intel vs AMD?

Mine came with a 90 Watt adapter. I'm assuming it is because of the 3450 though.

Wouldn't the ps connect directly thru MB? True, I don't have the 3450 just the 3200 but the plug / connector is different size. I can see the need for additional power for a dedicated graphics card. Would they use diff mbs for the diff configurations? Seems like a universal PS configuration would make more sense...

Just another thought: i wonder if your new 90w PS is the same as my old dv6000 90w ps or if it is different? Does anyone have both and can compare the connector sizes?

    Hello all-

I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of my laptop (Still in Shanghai -"Delay beyond our control" :( ) Anyway, I'd like to pick up a cooling pad (preferably one that can be used on the lap), but was wondering which one would be best based on the vents for the dv5z? I've read a lot of good reviews on the Zalman brand, but it seems like the air vents on those pads stop near the back- exactly where the fans are. Am I completely wrong here? Are there other better, and cheaper, alternatives for the dv5?

I believe they are the same size because the part numbers matched when I bought a second one on eBay. It would make sense to have a 90 watt with a dedicated graphics card if CrossfireX is intended to be used due to the additional power draw when both GPUs are active. If that is the case, there could be hope of a BIOS update in the future enabling Crossfire. :D

So even though Crossfire is disabled, the laptops are still coming with both the 3200 and the 3450?

I think that mine must be sitting right next to yours on the dock.

FedEx just dropped off a Belkin Cushtop today. It's not a cooling pad per se, but it makes using a laptop on my lap MUCH more comfortable (at least with my old Toshiba - still waiting for the dv5z). The non-skid fabric surface is firm enough so as not to block the fan vents, but there is no active cooling involved. It'll probably run at the same temperature it would sitting on a table. Only $15 (shipped) after rebate. Did I mention it was really comfortable? :)

I checked the bottom lids of my dv5z (with 3450) last night, and there was one that I did not understand the function of. When you open it, you see a chip named "southbridge". The wireless card is under hdd, rams have a different lid, so why this one?

Anyways, hp tech support requested the hw info of my laptop to hopefully understand if it has hd3200, etc and i'll send it this evening.

The southbridge is the SB700 that is installed. Southbridge chipsets control all of the I/O devices as well as the hard drives in your system. You can think of the southbridge as your low speed device controller and the northbridge as your high speed device controller.

A quick question for dv5z owners. For the ones that just have the HD3200 (no HD3450) what battery life are you getting (with either the standard or high capacity battery). I want to compare it to what the DV5t owners are getting with their IGP.

    Thanks in Advance.

Because that's where the TV tuner was supposed to be. If you look closely you can see the screw holding where the mini pci-e cards would have been attached.

How can I tell that I actually got the high capacity 6 cell battery? My battery life has been somewhat underwhelming and I want to confirm that I got it.

And how do you get a time remaining readout from Vista? I'm a Vista-newb.

Does it have specs on it? The standard battery is 10.8V, 47Wh. So if you have one that says more than 10.8V then it would be the high capacity one.

What battery life do you get? Try turning down the brightness and leaving off things like bluetooth and the wireless when not using it.

With the standard battery and the integrated graphics the reviewer on this site only got 2:22, and you have the HD3450, so I would expect it to negate any advantage the high capacity battery gave you.

Are there any markings on the battery. Usually, hp batteries only list the Whr rating. The standard 6 cell is rated at 47Whr, so the hc 6 cell should be a little higher, somewhere in the 55Whr range.

Unfortunately, there is no way to see the time remaining since hp's batteries or bios dont seem to have that capability.

Just to let you know, F.08 BIOS is available at HP's site. According to the description, there still seems to be no fix for CrossFire.

Update: I just installed the BIOS and I can confirm that the HD 3200 adapter is still not found with this new BIOS.

I ordered the following last night:

    Your customized PC includes:

    - HP Pavilion dv5z Entertainment Notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    - AMD Athlon(TM) X2 Dual-Core Processor for Notebook PCs QL-60 (1.9GHz)
    - 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    - FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!!
    - ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics
    - FREE Upgrade to 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - Webcam Only
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - 802.11b/g WLAN
    - No High speed 56K modem port
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I'm thinking I may have gone overboard with ordering the 64 bit instead of the 32bit. I'm not a gamer so I don't particularly care I just thought higher would be better. Should I call and request the 32bit to free up space and make it faster? Will it even matter?

Also, I really truly care about picking up wireless connections. Is this a good comp for wireless connectivity?

    - 256MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3450 Graphics
    - FREE Upgrade to 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive from 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth
    - Verizon Wireless V740 ExpressCard (Service Activation Required)
    - High speed 56K modem port
    - LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

My preference would have been to delete the OS and the hard drive, since I plan to buy an SSD for this thing and run Linux.
And like someone else mentioned, I'm wondering if applying some ArcticSilver will help with the temperatures...

That's strange, when I ordered a week or so ago I got the:

    - HP Imprint Finish (Mesh) + Microphone + Webcam

But I see that this is no longer available. I wonder why they are suddenly changing around available options like this.

They just changed how they described that option. The imprint is standard & the microphone is also now standard option since the webcam is offered by default. Previously(long time ago) they used to sell the systems without the imprint finish or the webcam or the microphone, so that meant they had to describe the imprint finish along with the microphone & webcam which they dont have to now.

Can someone please tell me why my screen glitches like mad in the upeer half when i quit playing counter-strike source? Its does it for about 2 min after and it helps a little if i close steam altogether...Is this a bad sign? I have the 1280x800 screen ZM 80 CPU and the HD 3200. Is CS to much for the laptop?

Unless you know that you have an irreplaceable old app or peripheral that won't play nice with 64-bit, ALWAYS order 64-bit Vista. You need it for 4GB RAM support and having to reinstall the OS after you've set up your apps, etc is a royal pain. You did good. 32-bit Vista shouldn't exist.

haha, last week was a crazy week of sales for the dv5t due to the 400 off 1299 coupon code. now it's the dv5z's turn to sell like hotcakes because of the 200 off 999 coupon NB9970, stackable with the 150 instant savings. with the livesearch 5% cashback, i'm really tempted to just buy a loaded one now for 670 after tax*, but my dv6000 hasn't died yet >_<

*edit: it is ALSO stackable with the 120 off of 2 years warranty, so you'd actually save 470 in total, which is MORE than with the dv5t, where you only saved 400 regardless of whether you bought warranty. 800 after tax and 2 years warranty and livesearch cashback. holy crap! O_O

Hey guys, I'm getting my new dv5z this week from HP. It will come with the vista (64 bit) pre-istalled. I do not want any bloatware that comes with it, is it possible to use "revo uninstaller" to get rid of all the bloatwares? Or should I just go ahed and make recover cds and do a clean installiation.
    Thank you...

Yeah, they wouldnt sell systems with the 'webcam' and not provide a microphone! There should be 2 holes by the side of the webcam containing the microphones. In Windows Vista, right click on the sound icon in the notification area(taskbar) and theere should be an entry for recording devices which would be your microphones.

    I was curious, I am coming from a 1.9ghz Turion X2 (TL-58) w/ ATI X1270 video

If I were to get a DV5Z w/ a 2.1ghz Turion X2 (ZM-80) w/ ATI 3450, how much better would it be performance wise in gaming? Leaps and bounds? Marginally? Just want something fairly significant I think.

I finally received my dv5z today:

    – Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    – AMD Turion(TM) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-80 (2.1 GHz)
    – 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    – FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)!!
    – ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3200 Graphics
    - Deskjet 6988 wireless printer

After the 2+ hours it took to create the recovery discs, suddenly $19 for OEM discs doesn't seem that unreasonable anymore. ;)

Setup took a while, but was straightforward. Setting up the printer was a snap, even though the HP driver/bloatware, even stripped down to the minimum, still took up 500+ MB. Over the last week I set up a convoluted, Rube Goldberg-ish wired network. Every component (PC, cable modem, router, ethernet modems, cables, switch, and printer/notebook) was made by a different manufacturer. But somehow the stars were aligned and it all just worked. Plugged the dv5z into the network, loaded IE, and went online from the other side of the house. Sweet. :)

So I've been using the dv5z for the last 12 hours or so. I love it, except for a few little things:

    1) Like everyone else noticed, it runs very warm. No idea of temps yet, I need to find some sort of diagnostics software and run some tests. The Belkin CushTop helps to keep the legs cool and holds the notebook at just the right angle. I'm waiting on an active cooler and will see if that helps. I found it interesting that HP warns not to use the computer on your lap. I guess that's why they call them notebooks now instead of laptops.

    2) Putting it in "battery saver mode" (can't recall the correct term), the notebook was almost unuseable. I was playing with the webcam software, and the lag was horrible. Maybe for surfing or email it would be fine, but it was slow (that's the point, I guess - but man was it SLOW)

    3) Maybe it's nitpicking, but the DVD writer mechanism seems very flimsy, especially the tightness of the disc on the spindle (?). It felt like something was going to break every time I snapped in a disc.

    4) Vista/HP bloatware. Loads of useless, resource hogging crap, as expected.

    5) No recovery discs included with notebook. When burning the three discs, I couldn't help but think of the collective millions of hours of wasted time/electricity used by people that are forced to burn their own recovery discs.

    6) Again, nitpicking, but I think white keyboard lettering instead of black would have been a better idea. In low light, at an angle, it's difficult to read the black on silver keys.

No notebook is perfect, but overall I'm very pleased with the dv5z so far, especially for $577 shipped (including printer). So far, so good.
