I have had a HP dv5z w/ windows Vista Home Premium - 64 bit for two days now.
1) I have a wired USB mouse that I use since the touchpad is terrible. But everytime, I plug in this supposedley plug and play mouse, there is a message that says device driver is being installed and it takes a few moments before the mouse can be recognized. Is this normal?
2) Also, the day i got my laptop, i had to download Windows updates (the automated message on the control panel said so!) and installed them. I am not sure if its related but since then i have re started my laptop 2-3 times and there is a file check process that happens as a part of the start up and then just before the welcome screen comes, i get a message
Step 1 of 3 - Configuring Updates - Do not shut down your computer.
How long is this going to happen and is this normal?
Thanks,
PN

1) If you plug a USB device into a different USB port you'll get that message.
2) That's odd. It's possible that Vista simply couldn't install all the updates at once? I see that Vista has some patches waiting for a reboot to install on my notebook so you probably just did the big batch 'o updates before Microsoft pushed out this last set. -
I dont have the usb issue any more..
As far as the start up issue goes, its now stopped. I restarted my computer yesterday and it takes a little bit - definitely more than 30-40 sec. I have a 2GHz processor. thanks,

I also have a hp problem my computer is a dv6636nr first my 2 usb ports failed, then my start up time was longer and longer. Then I got a black screen. I could only get back using last known good configurtion. Then that stopped. My husband is very knowledgeable with computers. So he was able to get it to start after a very lengthy process. He thinks it's the motherboard that is bad. All over the net I've read that these computers are doing the same thing. Do you think it's the motherboard or maybe something else. I can't shut down now or I get the black screen. I did a full recovery but no help! Thank you for your help

Yes, it's likely the defective NVIDIA chipset going bad. See if your notebook is on the list and call HP:
