Just got my new HP dv6 3011 (with a i5 CPU) and haven't had much time with it yet. Unfortunately, I'm shocked to hear how loud the fan on the left gets. I've only booted it up all the way to the win7 setup-up thing just once so far but the fan is running hight right from power up. Is this how it should be on the new line of notebooks or will some kind of power management kick in as soon as Windows is setup properly?

I have the same issue on the DV6z w/ N620 and 5470.
What graphics config do you have? -
I think while the Windows setup is running the fans are quite loud if I remember correctly, if they still are when you have booted in to Windows then something is wrong obviously.

TOMillr - do you have GPUz installed? If so, does your onboard graphics GPU core MHz scale with video demand?

anyone else having this issue? I'm about to send mine back, but sure would like to have some idea what is going on before I do!!
-
Well, I returned mine because my fan was too loud during high cpu usage even when it was only 70*C and comparing mine to others they had fans that they could hardly hear even when it got up to 80*C.

Agreed I am going to get rid of mine, the fan only ever slows down when at a steady idle, otherwise runs loud and hot, I can't imagine the i5 being that much better.

Ok, got myself another one and this modell stays cool while surfing the net or editing Word documents - but the fan is still annoying. Did anyone of you give the "fan always on" feature in the system setup a go?
Or would it be possible (though some kind of tool) to adjust the how fast the fan runs during idle states? I don't really mind having the fans running all the time, they just don't need to be amped up like that when I'm not running any power hungry applications. -
for the record, I sent my DV6z back to HP for repair. The replaced the motherboard and now all is well.
Let me know if anyone has questions. -
Any news on this? Isn't it possible to somehow tweak the fan settings? I don't mind having the fan ran all the time, just a lower speed would be nice (since the system doesn't run hot at all).

The fan runs when I have the 5650 running, but with my IGP on and cpu speed at 80% my fan never turns on. I've got my idle temp at 20*c right now.
So basically, if you don't need the 5650, use IGP and if you don't need full cpu speed, set your cpu power setting to a lower percentage. -
In the BIOS setting there is an option for the fans to always be on which is Enabled by Default. I disabled it a couple days ago and now my fans aren't even on as I type this. i5-460m CPU sitting between 39c-43c (Would probably be lower if I enabled the fans always on option). Every couple minutes they will kick in for about 5 seconds and shut off again. Mine has a manufacturing date of the 26th of September and when I'm doing something processor intensive the fans are really quiet. But I can notice a bit of a whine when its not on a desk and I wonder if its worse for some then others. I am using Intel Graphics(Not By Choice) so perhaps that changes something.

I bought an dv6-v3 i5-450 and the fan were really loud, so i returned it and bought an Samsung R590 with an i5-450 and the fan is quiet even when the cpu is running at 100%
