No word on Envy 14/15!
The Envy 17 just gets the usual i7 offerings (i3/i5 not out yet), new ATI 6850 which is switchabe with IGP, and HP CoolSense cooling.

WHY HP WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
*cries in a corner* -
I do not know about you guys but I am definitely returning my Envy 17 3D.
I am loving it but HP screw us over. Why the heck they release it if they was planning a full refresh in a month??
Sandy Bridge outperform the current i7 in almost every category it includes an HD graphic card plus it runs SOOOOOO MUCH cooler that the current i7.
HP finally decided to include the HP CoolSense technology to the Envy 17 this in compilation with the Sandy Bridge i7 will keep the laptop extremely cool plus I bet now it will be able to deliver more than 2 hours of power on standard battery.
Plus the new ATI 6850M is not only faster and better but also use switchable graphics technology!!!
The new Envy is the Ultimate 17 inch desktop replacement laptop...
Somebody please tell me that they also included a Blu-Ray burner and thats it it will be near perfect... -
Well, sad, but happy that something even better is on the horizon. Yes, a Bluray burner would be nice, eventhough burning your own Blurays is impracticle at this moment since blank Bluray disks costs are not justified. You are better off buying the actual Bluray movie.
What HP NEEDS to do for the new Envy 17 3D refresh, is 100% include HDMI 1.4 support. I mean, seriously, I can't even believe HP let this model out without proper 1.4 support. People are buyin a 3D unit!!! Only makes sense that those owners would most likely want to enjoy thier 3D Bluray movies in a HDTV 3D in their living room using the Envy 17 3D as the player.... so yeah, to me I need the 1.4 support.
And if true, that the new refresh 17s will be cooler, I'd hope HP would leave our new GPUs alone!!!! Do Not Underclock our GPUs please, thanks. Infact, I'd be very pleased if HP offered an overclocked GPU/CPU option...We can only wish. Therefore, making it a hot gaming machine, and a machine for business use...classy, sexy, all rolled up into one.
KJ -
Blu-Ray offers 25GB on single layer and 50GB on double layer.
You are absolutely right and I totally agree with you on the HDMI 1.4.
I mean even if the current Envy can video out 3D using a modified HDMI 1.3 why they didn't include the latest version on this top of the line, high-end $2000++ laptop?? It doesn't make any sense. The same with Bluetooth 2.1 and the latest Bluetooth 3.0.
Finally I am wondering if the new specs apply to the regular Envy 17 or the Envy 17 3D or both??
Hopefully is for both as I really love the 120Hz screen on the Envy 17 3D. -
i have two weeks to return the new envy 17 3d i just bought from Fry's. If the new Envy's with Sandy Bridge are out by then or within the next month i'll buy it and return this one.
-
Wish I could afford an Envy 17
but I'm on a budget. I'd definitely pick an Envy 17 over the MBP 15 considering they're the same price range in Canada, but I hope HP has a better handle on quality control this time around.
I was really hoping for an Envy 15 reintroduction or Envy 14 w/Radiance+SB, but I guess that won't happen until the dual core SB processors are out next month.
As to whether HP will underclock the 6850M, I'm pretty sure they won't have to as it won't be running as the primary GPU. Hence it would be plausible for them to leave it at stock clocks as it will only be used during gaming or other graphics intensive programs. The reason for lower clocks was likely to reduce general purpose heat and better battery life to a level where failures would be minimized. Since the 6850 will only be on a fraction of the time it was compared to the past generation, it won't suffer as much wear and tear thus being able to use higher clocks. -
It's interesting that so many of you are willing to part with your laptops. I could've returned mine for the 3D but didn't want to let it go. Every little update seems to offend folks who just bought the last version. I hope they continue to make tweaks so that the line is as successful as it can be. -
ETA for amazon release? I need a new laptop very soon but may have to go with the 720qm prepackaged version available now...
-
AWESOME, best news ever. Getting a Envy 17 (3D?) once they are available.
-
I just wonder when, this is perfect.
I mean new GPU, COOLING SOLUTION, AND SD, just ownz!! -
At least tease me, HP! -
Guess I'll be returning my Envy 17 3D that I just got on the 29th of December. They better refund my drop and spill protection plan too!
Do yal know how strict they (HP) are on returns? Any reason they won't accept a return? Should I not say I'm returning it because "I'm waiting on the Sandy Bridge Model"? -

I'm assuming an updated Envy 14 will follow too. -
My first post here. Hello dudes...
It has been 6 years since I built my last PC. (AMD 3400 2.20 GHz)
I ordered this laptop on 12/27. It isn't going to ship until 1/24. I figure the Sandy Bridge i7 processor was going to cost a ton and wasn't willing to pay $1500+ on a laptop. I have read on here that a dude got a a similar laptop to the one I order for $1150 with the Sandy Bridge. If that is the case I think I am going to do a return. What do you all think?

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
I would cancel the order right now. He bought on physical store, so just go where he went or wait a bit to appear online. -
Waiting for Envy 14 or even a Envy 15 with Cool
i7-quad core SB processors with switchable graphics,my dv6 battery life is very bad
Also badly needed Bluray burner (I just got one out of curiosity, to see how they look!) -
Yeah, get the sandy bridge one. I love mine.
-
Will HP site be selling HP DV7-4290us model? I rather just buy from them.
-
God I hope they do a model with any of the 6900m series. The 6800m series are juts rebrands. LAME
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
hp wont use high end gpus on any of their pcs. it never used in the recent it never will with the leaked envy
-
Yeah waiting for SB
and
HP CoolSense technology : A motion sensor in the notebook detects whether the laptop is being used on the lap at an angle or flat on a desk and determines how hard the cooling fan should run.
This is really a cool technology!
How is the temperature of laptop under heavy gaming and while normal web browsing? -
With the HP recommended power profile, a balmy 75C both CPU and GPU w/ Dirt 2 running.
With Cinebench, it's a sizzling 85-90C on the CPU -
Then the temperature is in very good range for a Quad-core and DDR5 graphics, mine while playing GTA 4 crosses 100F ........ -
I wonder when we will get more information about when the new Envy 17 will be available for purchase as well as what processor choices will be available... I was about 2 seconds from purchasing a current envy17 (pre-configured) from newegg when I heard rumblings the E17 was getting a refresh.
Hopefully newegg gets a few pre-configured options fairly quickly as I've been in the market for a laptop for awhile now and I'm getting impatient!! lol
Does HP have a keynote for CES? -
Just out of curiosity, how much did you shell out for the SB dv6?
-
-
Are those releases "leaks"? I found one listed in Europe (almost same with the dv7 mentioned here, only slightly downgraded (unimportant stuff like hard disk capacity)) but the wholesaler told me "it's supposed to start going out on the 6th of Jan". The retail chain that had it listed probably got it from someone else, the national wholesaler said. It all smells like sneaking out models intel didn't allow them to, but I may just becoming paranoid because I can't wait.
--
Also, I thought HP had a special deal with intel this time since Toshiba - which I usually prefer - doesn't have one, but then I found out there on the Americas you have more manufacturers releasing them (or at least listing them) now so that was probably only a wholesaling glitch in international shipping. -
The one I order shipped last night without the SB chip. I am going to return it once I get it.
I am hoping that Costco will sell it. I heard there warranty is the best.
I knew the new chip was going to come out, but I thought the SB chips would be $1500+ at least. -
Ok got my RMA and dropped off my laptop.
Walmart is going to be selling the dv7-4290us. Going to get it from them once I get credited. -
i wonder if the DV6 will be this fast. I never expected the Quad core to last for 4.5hrs. I might get a envy 14 if it is updated by mid february. if its any later, i'm just gonna get a DV6/7. i need a new computer soon. I am going to college soon and my old pentium 4 dell sounds like it's gonna bite the dust soon.

Just saw closely a new series of Computers on HP India Website and was shocked to see QM on i5 processor! Is it there in reality or Sandy Bridge series i5 have? or some typo error?

Yup. they are
-
Well...looks like I will be sending my dv6tse back (that I just ordeded on Tuesday) and will be looking at a dv7tse instead.
Does anyone know if I can cancel an order that has not shipped yet? I know the HP site says you cannot, but I wasn't sure how true it was. -
Perhaps coolsense anticipates the need for cooling before the actual need, turning up the fan slightly and "smoothing" what would otherwise be an unstable fan speed that reacts to, rather than anticipates cooling needs. -
-
Finally did some game benchmarks on my Envy 17 3D with some of my friends, in the video they voice some of their opinions of 3D, and of the laptop.

Awesome, definitely getting a laptop with 3D soon
-
Hi Bravoexo, can do some pics of the laptop and upload them for good design? thanks!
-
Search at Amazon for the dv7-4190us, the pics are the same for the 4290us or search flickr.com for dv7-4290us, those are all my pics so far.

The Microcenter DV7 SB deal in on again with a $50 rebate. I believe that it's bravoexo's laptop

Any idea for pricing or release date on the Envy 17?
-
Solid machine for just over ~$1,000. I might consider one if they add one more GPU option beyond the 6570M.
Maybe Fry's has one on display by now. -
-
And the best news.... HP site now has the support and drivers page up for the dv7-4290us.... and i see new stuff now available... Intel's IGP driver... updates on Smart media (hopefully fixes the Avatar blu-ray problem) (updated 1/8/11 too)
However, the ATI driver's are behind again... (8.771 vs 8.801 w/ the latest from AMD)
oh well... -
Well at least MicroCenter fixed the spec sheet by removing WiDi.
-
What I don't get about all these new computers is the display options. I mean, you can configure practically anything, even add a touchscreen, but you're still stuck with a crappy 1366x768 display.
What made me sell my previous HP (DV7 2060eo) was the abysmal display. Even if it was 1600x900, it had viewing angles from hell. If I were trying to watch a movie, I'd have to be completely still or the black areas would turn into grey/silver. Hell, even when looking at the screen from the front, the entire screen wouldn't display black, some area would turn grey/silver no matter what. I just hope the new laptops don't have this bad viewing angles, even if it's a low res screen. For me it would be a dealbreaker atleast.
