I own an HP dv6000 and would like to add a blu-ray drive. Does anyone know if my notebook is blu-ray-capable? It's just over a year old, and I'm in the midst of a few upgrades, uninterested in buying a new one just yet.

The drive will work. Whether you'll be able to play DRM-infected Blu-ray video discs... not sure. If you don't have a dedicated video chip, forget it. The new ATI Radeon 3200 is the only integrated GPU I can think of that can handle Blu-ray video.

It's much cheaper to buy a Blu-ray drive with a new notebook than to buy a drive separately.

I have decided to wait until laptops include blu-ray writers since I want it perhaps mainly for storage capabilities. I can find affordable laptop blu-ray ROM drives, but writers cost about $500. That's insane. I'd just as soon buy a new notebook, especially since I have no HDMI port. I saw a desktop writer on eBay for just $239. I've always preferred notebooks, but this illuminates the desktop advantage: better upgradability.

I suspect blu-ray writers are just around the corner since prices are plummeting. Something new awaits the next notebook generations; that's for sure.

I have an Intel Core Duo processor, by the way.

Thank you for your help, folks.
