Yeah, just use Vista's Power options menu in the control panel to change the time limit to never.

There used to be a small app which you could run which would turn off the LCD. I cant seem to find it anymore and dont know if it will even work with VIsta. Other than that the other suggestion would be to create another Power profile and set the LCD turn off threshold to the lowest level. You can then easily alternate between the 2 options as and when necessary.

    EDIT: Found this one...
    http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

Wizmo can do a lot of different functions and to turn off the monitor, all you need to do is download the application and create a shortcut to the application and set the target parameter to -monoff. So everytime you lanch the app(using the shortcut) it will turn off the monitor and you can turn it back on by pressing the keyboard or moving the mouse. I tired it on XP and it seemd to work well, although it took a few seconds for the LCD to wake up. I havent tried under Vista if you want to try it out or just use the suggestion I posted above.

When you close the lid, the display is turned off.

Usually, doing that turns off the backlight, the monitor itself will be on. But this is controlled by the manufacturer and they can either completely turn off the monitor or just the backlight.

How can I find out whether only the backlight is turned off or the display? Just out of curiosity, if the backlight is turned off, then what else is on? whats the difference?

Just the LCD's will still be active. I don't of any way to know but typically, if the LCD is completely off it will take a while for it to turn back on. The back lights turning on would be very quick compared to the full off state. When it is fully off it is obviously using no or very little power. When the back light is off it uses a bit of power to keep the LCD's active.

most of the laptops sense it's lid open or close by a magnetic switch.
u can use any metal item to find out where is the magnet (should be some where around the bezel of the LCD) the switch is located at the palm rest as the magnet on the bezel reaching the palm rest.
so.. without closing the lid.. place a magnet on the switch.. u ll experience a lid closed condition without having the lid closed...
and then u can c whether ur display turned off or the backlight turned off.
    if i m not mistaken,
display off condition.. u are not able to c anything on the display. jz like when ur laptop is off.
backlight off condition.. u still can c the display slightly.. just like u lower down the display brightness.. but this time the brightness is totally zero.
