After a ton of research and waiting, I came down to the Dell 1505 and the HPdv6000t. I don't game now since I have many different consoles, but I would like to give PC gaming a try. This is the final configuration I came up with.

I'm trying to keep it under $1,200... so I have two questions.
1. What would be a better upgrade for performance?
a. $100 more = Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
b. $135 more = 2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
2. Should I only get the 512MB of RAM and purchase either an additional 1 GB stick (1.5GB Total) or two 1GB sticks (2GB Total)? If that is the better path, is the HP RAM easy to upgrade?

1) If you are planning on installing Vista then 2 GB RAM makes all the difference in the world. With 1 GB RAM, that's a fast system. With 2 GB, the system will scream. The processor upgrade is definitely less important, and gives you less for your money.
2) I know the RAM is fairly easy to upgrade, but I found that with the deal I got from HP on 2 GB, it really wasn't worth getting qualified memory from another source and doing it myself. Also, since the memory is part of your system config, any problems and its under your system warranty. I'm sure others disagree with me on that, but check out prices before you make a decision on that. -
I ran Vista Ultimate on my R60 with 512MB of memory. It seemed to do OK.

So if you got a t7200 + 2 gig of ram that you have a super fast system right? remember , ram can always be upgraded but processors are a bit harder to upgrade.
-
Thanks for the info. I'll keep checking on HP's site and see if prices change this week.
-
id go with the processor upgrade to the t7200, it'll take anything you throw at it, you can upgrade the ram anytime you feel like it, but if you want and get the processor upgraded after your purchase, it will be a bit harder
