I bought this system used and it is in excellent shape, but it has a repeatable hanging issue. It does this even on the BIOS screen with no hard drive, no battery, only one stick of memory in all possible configurations (suffice to say I've narrowed it down to none of the usual suspects). I can make it freeze repeatably simply by closing the screen (not the whole way)... at about the halfway point, more times than not, the system will simply hang (on the main BIOS screen, the clock seconds stop moving). If Windows is loaded, the cursor freezes, keyboard freezes (no caps lock light, etc) and a reboot is necessary.

It is out of warranty. I've already opened it up and reinforced the back of the motherboard over various chips to tighten their connections, but no luck there. It has to be a loose connection somewhere where the screen meets the body. I've had the screen off, but couldn't see anything that looked wrong.

I'm hoping to find someone who's run into a relatively easy fix for this, short of motherboard replacement (which is not worth it to me).

You can try updating the BIOS to see if it fixes your problem (of course, hopefully the notebook won't freeze while the BIOS update is in progress, because if it did then that would be bad).

    Version F.42 - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-69505-1

Also, be aware that your notebook may be covered under the warranty enhancement that is set in place for the series. More information is located at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...ftwareitem=ob-69505-1&os=2093&product=3255903
