Costco coupon book during the week 2/26-3/4/07 has $100 off HP Pavillion 15.4" widescreen notebook dv6253cl ($899.99 after coupon). Anybody seen specs for this thing?
I bought a dv6058cl from Costco back in August, and would like to know how the dv6253cl compares. I know the 6253 comes with XP Media Center, has a Lightscribe drive, and should qualify for a free Vista upgrade; my 6058 came with XP Home, has a DL DVD burner but no Lightscribe, and doesn't qualify for Vista because it was purchased too early. Beyond that, they seem like about the same machine. Is there some logic behind HP's Pavilion product numbers that would let one figure out the features?
dv6058cl specs are here:

The dv6058cl, by the way, has been pretty nice, except that I wish the battery life was a little better.

hey those specs are pretty good!
the only bad thing is the processor... -
for the price the the whole system is good -
Couple corrections on this HP dv6253cL Costco deal: don't think the DVD burner has Lightscribe (since coupon doesn't mention it), and coupon says it comes with Vista, not MCE (which makes more sense, since Vista launch is going on right now). Does anybody have any idea which flavor of Turion X2 it uses, and which graphics chipset?

i think 256 mb gpu... maybe 128...

HP has put the specs for the dv6253cl online. The major difference between the two is the graphics card. The 6253cl ships with the integrated Geforce 6150 Go compared to the Go 7200 in the dv6058cl. Both systens do not include Lightscribe comapatibility.
The only reason to get the dv6253 in your case would be if you want Vista.

Having returned 2 HP DV5xxxCLs bought at Costco, both with the same awful keyboard problems, I ordered a custom DV6200t via Costco (the ONLY way I'd buy an HP because of Costco's return policy....), and, this too will be going back because it is defective on arrival: closing the lid does isn't recognized - the machine stays on, the screen stays on, and any settings you make for power options when the screen is closed are not recognized. HP (if you can call it) support wanted me to send the brand new machine in for warranty repair. I don't think so.
Since I ordered my custom machine in December (and which I'm keeping for now as I'm out of USA unable to return), HP has RAISED THE PRICE for the DV6000t's significantly.
What I don't like about the machine: the audio is truly AWFUL and on many things lacks sufficient volume; even lacks sufficient volume with highly efficient headphones.
The touch-sensitive buttons for quickplay are VERY sensitive - I've had the machine turn itself on WITH THE LID CLOSED when going through airport security as somehow these buttons 'sensed a touch'...!
There is no PC-Card slot.
The location (on the sides) of the connectors for network, USB, etc. are very inconvenient and can interfere with using an external mouse/ etc.
HP has gone WAY overboard with pre-installed "software" (i would call it MALWARE*) - it's really way over the top and will cause BIG performance hit. To get the machine configured in a reasonable manner will take A LOT OF TIME. Oodles of gigabytes of disk space are "wasted" by the "recover partition", as well as an extra copy on the main partition of all the pre-installed software's installation "disks".
WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE COSTCO PRE-CONFIGURED MACHINE: The AMD Processor. (I'd rather have Intel Inside). The integrated/shared-memory video. No bluetooth.
But, it's a pretty good price considering it's over $600 less than the same machine with the Intel CoreDuo T7200, Bluetooth, and the better video....
All in all, I've really soured on HP. If I were smart enough, I'd never buy an HP again for the rest of my life. The quality is way down and the support is even worse.

wow you really put the hp pavillions down...
i hope there is no problems with my laptop... -
ive got a dv9000 and Im so far pretty happy with it but only major issue I have is that occasionally the C2D CPU suddenly jumps to full speed with the fan running and stays there while the system becomes unresponsive. Its not a complete freeze as u can still turn the caps lock and num lock on and off but u cant do anything else. So far no real explanation as to the problem and it happens pretty much on a daily basis. Im guessing its perhaps a driver issue somewhere but still dunno what.
otherwise the quickplay buttons havent caused any problems for me and ive been to the airport myself and carried it round alot and the buttons havent gone off accidentally unless i press them by accident. the right shift key is very small but u get used to it.
sound quality isnt great but is quite good compared to budget models but definitely could be better. still pretty loud depending on the thing ur playing and my PSP earphones get quite loud when im hooked up to em.
the fact that their high end models dont come with high end video cards is quite perplexing, i mean u wud expect their mid range to come with the 7600 not the high end. disk space fills up quick esp when they allocate 2gb to the quickplay partition and 7gb to the recovery.
but all in all i am happy with my purchase apart from the fact that it came with xp home which i can only upgrade to vista basic (the fact that i didnt have a choice is puzzling, why give us an entertainment notebook and not use MCE on it) but this is an issue specific to my region and not the rest of the world.
as for the specs of the two, the 6150 is a let down when it comes to games it just doesnt cut it. i would wait for better deals -
wow that sucks that it suddenly freezes with fan running and the C2D jumps..... u should ask some people here, they might be able to fix it.... is that how you bought it?

BTW, since posting yesterday, my DV6000 turned on by itself after I had put it in a carry case and stored in the closet. Got hot enough to cook with, and completely drained the battery.
Come to find - this is not an uncommon problem for these machines -

that sucks

with regard to the laptop not powering on when the lid is opened or powering on when the lid is closed:
Guys, the problem is with the LCD dim switch. I am a laptop tech and own a DV6253CL. At work we see the DV6000 come in for this problem sometimes, although we dont see many DV6000's in general.
Anway, it powered on because the LCD dim switch momentarily became unclosed (an open circuit) and then closed again. This causes the computer to power on, but as soon as the power management IC on the motherboard realizes that the lid is closed again it one of a number of things based on the manufacture. In this case, it stays powered on but doesn't load to windows.
-------------------------------------------
The GPU that the 6253 uses is the Nvidia 6150 which, from what I can ascertain has 64mb of dedicated memory and can allocated up to 215mb of system memory if needed. In short, this GPU was meant for a pleasant non-gaming experience that can support HD formats and be able to play some lightly graphic envasive games.
As of now, at Costco the DV6253CL comes with Vista Home Premium preinstalled and a Panasonic UJ-850S DVDRW drive that supports all formats except for Lightscribe, BD and HDVD. It even supports the rare DVD-RAM. -
Is there a way I can upgrade this thing to one with a lightscribe drive? I always thought that was a cool feature but it's tough to beat this price ($899) with 2 gb of ram.

At this moment I have 3 DV6000's -
My original defective unit waiting for FedEx (or whomever) to come and pick it up for return/credit;
The replacement I ordered online from Costco (DV6000t), and the DV6253CL purchased from Costco warehouse with the coupon.
I plan to compare the 6253 and the custom 6000 which I paid about $500 more for to see which one to keep. (Although the custom 6000 is now about $100 less online for the same configuration - maybe I should return it and order exact replacement; or, I've read here some are successful in getting refund when price goes down within 30 days).....
With much difficulty, I was able to do a clean install of XP-Pro on the 6000t replacement wiping out Vista which I don't want to bother with.... will try and do the same with the 6253 to compare the 2 running XP Pro side-by-side.
Today, Costco has begun to change their return policy on computers from 6 months to 3 months, and at the same time has increased the warranty to 2 years. The return policy change will vary by region - the receipt I got at the warehouse today for the 6253 still indicates 6 months return period.

Hi --
I picked up one of these at Costco this weekend for $900 after coupon savings. I had originally planned on a CTO dv6000t, but by getting this I saved some $300-400, which I can use for a new desktop, or camera lens, or any number of my other expensive hobbies. The laptop is not my only computer so I can afford to cut some corners. This is a secondary machine, not a desktop replacement.
Downside to this machine over a CTO dv6000t:
AMD processor (would've preferred an Intel dual core, but it's not a big deal)
Lesser video capability (though it runs Aero just fine)
However, this is a nicely configured and it has been rock solid for two days now! Beautiful display, decent performance for my needs, ample 120 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM, no calls to HP Support required thus far, etc.
Of course the other plus in buying from Costco is I get the 6 month return-it-if-you-want deal (yes, my receipt says 6 months, so I'll hold them to that).
I think the Costco deal expired on 3/4, but for those of you not looking for a laptop for your only machine, or if you don't have heavy video requirements for gaming, this is a reasonable compromise.

ITS OK SPEC
THE ONLY DRAWBACK THEY DIDN'T LET YOU CUSTOMISE IT
IT DOESN'T HAVE LIGHTSCRIBE NOR BLUETOOTH OPTION
AND THEY WON'T GIVE YOU bag.
IF YOU ADD TAX AND EXTRA WARRANTY AND BAG ITS GOING TO BE $1100 -
Hi all,
New to these forums so hello! I just got one of the dv6253cl's from Costco and so far, I am pretty happy except for one thing and do not know if that is okay or not. I am only getting about 2.5 hours(little less than that with wi-fi on) of battery life. Is that normal for a 6-cell battery? What should I expect for battery life for the dv6253cl? Please let me know and if you could also email me at [email protected] as well.
Thanks,
Doug -
2.5 hours sounds about right. If you need more you may want to look into the 12 cell battery.

I would like to know how can i allocate memory for my graphics card, i heard that is useless cause u get little additional performance, but i would like to , know that anyway. As other users i have the nvidiA GEFORCE GO 6150 GRPAHICS CARD, and i aldo want to know if i can upgrade or change the graphics card, in that case, wich one would be the best to go for.
