Ok so my girlfriend has a HP dv6255us laptop that she uses. For some reason the wifi card in it sucks major. In my living room (farthest from my router) she gets two bars of reception and it often drops out while I will get over 90% reception.

So without knowing that HP uses a whitelist i went ahead and bought a atheros mini pci-e wifi card for the laptop. After installing the card and trying to boot the machine halts with an error message and will not continue.

After searching the net i found out that the whitelist is blocking the card and will not let the machine boot. I found one site that found a why around this by editing the bios and then repacking it. It was for a different model but still in the dv6000 series.

I have searched high and low trying to find a bios or another way around this and have gotten nowhere. I don't know how or even where to start with editing the bios on my own.

Does anyone here know where i can get a new bios without the whitelist or does anyone here know how to edit it to accept my new card. If there is any other way please let me know.

I cannot even find out what card this bios has programmed in it to pick up another card and i am not going to just keep buying them to find out which one will work lol.

Any info is much appreciated. Thanks.

Without modding your BIOS the only cards that would be compatible have their HP part #'s listed in the service guide for your notebook. If you are going to mod your BIOS, be sure to flash in the current BIOS version first. Actually, do that regardless to update the fan control settings.
