Hi there
I like the way you posted the issue
Anyway here's my advice:
1) Don't bother repairing it for $300 - that costs too much.
Use that money in a better way - what you might want to do is to buy a wireless card and slot it into the laptop. These can be USB or PC Card based.
2) Another thought, if you have been craving for another laptop, this is a perfect excuse to buy it. Try to sell the HP laptop off (just be honest and say the wireless is not working) and recover some money first. -
G.H,
1. The repair really isnt the issue, just wanted to know if there was any other options for repair prior to sending to HP. I dont want to put a bandaid on it by buying a USB or External wireless card.
2. The laptop mentioned (dv5-1160us) is the laptop I have been eyeing. I will end up giving the old one to my moms to use for her home. It was a gift to begin with so I wouldnt want to try and make money off if it.

Since you already re-installed software, etc. I would imagine you also deleted the wireless device from your device manager (Located in Network Adapters) and let your computer rediscover it as new hardware. If not, try it.
One other thing to try is to reset your computer, you may want to do this before the previous mentioned step. This sounds strange but has cured many a problem.
Remove the battery and external power source then hold down the START button for about 30 seconds (This clears memory components and whatever else I don't know). Reinstall the battery and external source and power back up. See if any improvement.
As a last ditch effort you should first copy all your personal data off onto an external source such as a USB HD.
- Restore the notebook to the factory software using the restore DVD's if you made/have them or from the restore partition. If you can do this and the wireless still does not work you know you have a hardware problem.
- If you send the notebook to HP the first thing they will do most likely is to restore the HD anyway so the only thing you lose is a little time if it doesn't work. -
Deeast,
Thanks for the advice.
Last night i thought about the same thing, the restore to factory settings. So i did a backup last night.
Backed up everything i have on there onto an external 320GB HDD.
So today i will try to do that.
Question-
I dont have any discs here with me, what if anything might happen that I might need the discs and what are my options?

Your laptop should be included in this product repair recall HP issued for notebooks which suffer from the Nvidia chipset/GPU defects. So, you should still be able to get it fixed under warranty since they essentially extended it for 2yrs for this particular problem. Check the below linked page for more information...

Miner,
Thats where I got online with the chat dude. Its kind of iffy on the coverage even if the notebook is already out of the 1 year warranty.
I do see where it states the 24 month coverage begins on when your initial one year coverage started.

Call HP. Your notebook is covered, period, it's just a matter of talking to someone clueful enough at HP to get it done.
Note that the current turnaround time appears to be about 1 month. My dv2120us is still being worked on. The "fixed" notebook will still have a NVIDIA chipset that's susceptible to thermal failure so replacing it with a new notebook with an AMD/ATI or Intel chipset and GPU is a good idea given your current location. Since HP is using NVIDIA in their Intel notebooks with dedicated GPUs, a dv5z or other AMD notebook with ATI GPU would be the better choice. There's just no way to know whether you're getting one of the fixed NVIDIA chips or not at this time.
