I am having a freezing problem with a 10 month old HP Pavilion dv6324us. I am running Windows Vista with 2gb of ram. It started roughly 2 months ago. It mainly would freeze when the power plug would be removed while the computer was on. The freeze would happen roughly 5 seconds after I unplugged the cable. It would freeze on whatever screen was on the display at the time, no code or another screen would appear. It also would freeze when it was on and I plugged it into the power cable, same thing roughly 5 seconds, no error code. Now a week ago I did a fresh install of windows vista. It is not freezing as much now, but it does occasionally freeze. I was running the zune software a little bit ago and it froze, it was hooked up to the power plug. I was listening to a song and when it froze the song just kept stuttering. I restarted and it is fine right now. It does not get hot and there is good ventilation underneath. I am getting very frustrated at this point. Wondering if someone could guide me in the right direction. It is completely up-to-date too. It has worked flawless except these last 2 months. Could it be a problem in Vista all of a sudden? Thinking of purchasing Windows XP and trying that, but wanted to see if someone had a similar problem. Sorry for the long story and thanks for your time.

I've had my dv6000us freeze up a lot too before... it's completely random. Usually when I'm just doing something simple, like browsing the net... it'll just lock up completely, and i can't do anything but reboot via the power button. I can't say that I've ever had an issue with the power cable causing lock ups though.

A clean install might help... also make sure you do plenty of virus and spyware scans, and also defragment your drive (preferably with a 3rd party source such as diskeeper or raxco perfect disc). I have heard that going back to XP is quite a difficult process, especially since HP doesn't really support XP anymore. You pretty much have to do everything manually (drivers, etc.). It might be a better idea to just stick with Vista. I doubt the issue you're having has anything to do with the operating system... sounds like it might be a hardware issue. Perhaps you might need a new power adapter or battery?! Try downloading the battery tester via the HP support site. Anyway, good luck.

]So what exactly happens when it freezes? No bluescreens? The screen just stays the same while the music your playing goes haywire?

Is there a trigger prior to freezing? Any of your installed software maybe?

Do you have the latest updates from Windows update? SP1 perhaps?

Yea, the screen stays the same. When I was listening to music and it froze. The screen stayed the same and the song just kept skipping. It is completely up-to-date. I have also re-installed Windows Vista. THe only "extra" software I have is the Microsoft Zune Software.
Before I re-installed the operating system. It seemed the "trigger" for freezing was unplugging and plugging in the power adapter while the laptop was running. Now, it is a bit more random since the re-install of Windows.
I will try the battery tester now.

I had the SAME problem, except with my dv5000

I reformatted and everything, but I think its a hardware problem. When I move my computer, or sometimes randomly, everything just hard freezes.

After 2 days of being on the phone with HP they are unsure of the problem. Computer is completly up-to-date. They overnighted a new Vista Recovery disc to me this morning, so I am in the process of loading that back on. I did check the event viewer last night before I started to reload this morning. At the time of freezing, there was an eror for the hard disk and an ACPI Bios? In the past 2 weeks there was a total of 921 errors. If this disc they sent does not work I have to send the laptop in to them.
I ran the hard disk test in the bios and it passed all 3 tests. After that I also ran a memory test and it passed. This is driving me crazy. Just wanted to up date the post.

Have you tried installing HDtune and checking the disk health? Also you can do a disc scan with it

The BIOS test isnt that great

I just used HDtune and everything checked out good.

The laptop has been running very smoothly since I re-loaded using the disk HP sent me this morning. Usually by now the computer would have froze a few times. I guess I will see how it goes from here. Thanks for the help.

It must be a software issue then if the freezing stopped, most likely something you installed.
