I just bought a HP dv6500 and the fan turns on and off about every 30 seconds. Is this normal?
I own a HP 14" verve, which I gave to my husband, and the fan rarely goes on. They both have the same processor, etc. The hard drive has more capacity on the dv6500 (250GB vs 160GB on the Verve). It turns on and off even if I'm just surfing the net. It's not overly loud just kinda annoying.
The click noise of some of the keyboards (eg. Return, Backspace) are also annoying.
I love my Verve but I also love the larger 15" screen as I do a lot of website work.

I'm not sure if this is a characteristic of HP notebooks, but do both of your notebooks have the same graphics chipset? I guess your Verve probably has an Intel X3100, but the dv6500 might have an 8400M, which would account for significant temperature differences in operation. Either that, or some software might be working discreetly in the background.
Have you updated the BIOSes on both notebooks?
Do they run identical OS and software setup?
Do they have identical devices attached?
Do they have identical specifications? -

They both have the Intel X3100 and both are Vista Home Premium. I haven't updated the bios (don't know how). I've had the 6500 for just over a day so I haven't installed any programs yet.
The heat generated from both the Verve and the 6500 are the same; I just don't understand why the fan keeps goin on and off so much on the 6500.
It's actually the 6654US, according to the specs on the box. -

HP Tech support updated the bios for my laptop remotely. No changes to the fan going on and off. I'm trying now to determine if I should return the machine.
Can someone please help me understand is this fan on and off every thirty second normal for a 15" screen laptop. As mentioned previuosly, the fan doesn't go on and off like this on my 3 month old, 14" screen HP Verve. -

what kind of a problem is this??????? I mean it's going to turn on and off as it needs to. Why do people complain about the dumbest things?

If my question was so dumb, why waste your time replying?!
I just spent OVER $1000 for a notebook and am seeking help to determine if the frequency the fan turns on and off is normal. Two family members have HP 14" laptops and their fans DO NOT turn on and off in the manner I've described.
I see you have a similar computer with a faster processor. Why don't you get off your high horse and give me a brief answer based on your user experience. Does the fan on your 6500 go on and off about every 30 seconds even when it is idle for a long time? If I have a lemon, I want to exchange it. I don't have $1000 to throw away.
If you can't or don't want to answer, maybe someone else will come along and give me some advice. -

Once in a while the CPU heatsink doesn't get mounted correctly. That could cause the symptoms you describe. I'd watch Task Manager for stray background processing chewing up CPU time first though. The usual virus/worm/spyware sweep would be a good idea too. Other than those things... just make sure you're not blocking the fan intake on the bottom of the notebook.
There are other more obscure hardware issue possibilities... or HP just decided to set the fan threshold lower for that particular model vs. your old one. Fun fun fun. -

I just bought this notebook about 2 months ago and havent had the time to return it........I have a few days unless someone can give me advise on these very loud constantly on fans. Who can read with this? All I want to know is if I can change something to make a difference...........so annoying

they just put up a new BIOS again which fixes the fan algorithm. so you can try that
