I'm getting a strange problem on my dv6500t with my dual booted Windows 7 RC install (same issue with the Beta). My searches have been inconclusive- is anyone else having this issue?

Using W7 as one user is fine, but if I leave one user logged in and switch user accounts, things start acting wierd...
    • Anti-virus fails to start (I've uninstalled AV and the rest still occur)
    • Can't use the IE button on the task bar
    • IE doesn't log in to some websites (e.g. AOL mail)
    • slowwwwwness
    • Lots of permanent window and menu artifact ghosting that only clears after logging out

This only happens when 2 users are logged in at one time... one user works just dandy.

I'm just suspicious of my HP... the friggen thing crashes on me enough or doesn't resume from hibernate/sleep so I'm not confident in the crap.

In case anyone else has this issue I may have found the solution...

When I installed W7 Beta and RC, I've had Virtualization Technology (VT) enabled the whole time in the BIOS option. Never turned it off from way back playing with VMware and VirtualBox.

I randomly had a hunch that VT might have been a problem, and lo and behold, after disabling VT the dual-user issues went away. I re-enabled VT in BIOS and the problem is not occurring again. Looks like it only occurs when VT is enabled during an install.

I've troubleshot this problem enough so I don't have the time to reinstall W7 just to test this out, but if someone else does... enable VT before the next time you install W7 and see if this happens to you.

I wish there was some way to submit feedback like in the W7 Beta... not sure about you but I used it a few times and the issues I reported all were solved by the RC. Windows would probably be more reliable all-around if they enabled that for all versions (even final versions).

    Hey Sid1,

Glad to be of assistance! Rep if it helped!

I never updated my post, but I have seen the problem again in W7 RC after turning VT off. Playing with the VT only seems to be a temporary fix. My official workaround is to log off right away and then log back in- the issue never reappears the 2nd login.

I don't believe VT is the issue because I've also seen this issue on my Eee PC 1000HE, whose Atom N280 does not even support VT! So, to be honest I really think the issue is W7 RC! I installed W7 Pro 32-bit (RTM) on the 1000HE about a month ago and I have not yet seen the dual login issue again, which is very satisfying.

I have a copy of W7 Pro 64-bit that I will install on my dv6500t when ever I get some motivation. I'll report if the issue is gone. My wife and I use the fast user switching quite often, and it still currently happens frequently.
